Publisher's summary

Celebrity dog trainer, YouTube sensation, and Animal Planet star Zak George presents a next-generation guide that uses his infectiously energetic style to teach dog-lovers everything they need to know about raising and training their unique pup.

Zak George is a new type of dog trainer. His fresh approach puts a strong emphasis on the relationship with the individual dog - informed by breed-specific traits - allowing people to treat the root cause of behavior issues rather than the symptoms and teach their dogs faster without the use of punishments or stress. For the first time, George has distilled all the information from his hundreds of videos into one master guide that covers everything from play biting and potty training to leash pulling and unwanted barking and jumping. As a bonus, listeners will be able to visit his YouTube channel to see real-life demonstrations of techniques described in the book, providing a truly modern listening experience.

From a military handlers view

I’m a professional overseas K9 contractor. I’m the exact type person he tells you to ignore in his book and I don’t blame Zak one bit. I do have reservations about how some of the tools and advice would work in my field. HOWEVER, without any doubt, when I help friends, train my personal dogs and even as much as possible with my working dogs I completely agree with his methods. Please, if you have a dog at home follow his method and your dog will be loving, well behaved and healthy.

I also love that he narrates his own book. I love the videos and his energy. Made listening to this an easy one sitting.

Keep up the amazing work!!!

Best book on adopting and training dogs!

I've been a fan of Zak's YouTube videos for a while and have used them to guide me as I welcomed and trained my lab/hound/collie mix Lucas with incredible success (keep in mind, he is very energetic and crazy). I've been eagerly awaiting the release of this book on Audible since I'm huge into audiobooks, but hate sitting down and reading physical books, and I was not disappointed.

Zak George provides the best advice for raising and caring for a dog, and listening to this audio book was a breeze as Zak narrates in the same tone and voice as his easy to watch YouTube videos.

Being someone who was raised around family dogs that were trained with choke-collars and Cesar Milan style dominance training (which was never really successful), Zak's approach to dog training is very refreshing. My dog Lucas is very receptive to the positive reinforcement training that Zak promotes, and I love the trusting relationship being built between us in the process.

Definitely worth a listen, and I will certainly recommend it to my friends and family that own dogs.

doesn't cover how to show leadership to dog

I used to believe everything Zach said as though it was gospel, but since have found that some of the elements he claims to be myths, have actually proven to be true and helpful for me.... for example, you must be your dog's pack leader.
It has nothing to do with dominating your dog or using harsh corrections, but rather showing though various aspects in day to day life that you, the owner, are in charge in you dog's eyes... I know y'all don't necessarily believe that, and you might think it is outdated information, but the knowledge of how to be the dog's pack leader has saved my relationship with my dog and a whole lot of frustration... I saw that there was indeed something to this "out dated" way of training.
Also there is NO fear, force, or agression required.
So I suggest trying theonlinedogtrainer.com.... "Doggy Dan"
it was the best thing I did in regards to dog training. Cheers
I want to say something positive about Zach George before I go.....
for a time in my life... when I was first starting out, he helped me have a clue how to potty train my puppy and tech different commands... I appreciate his love for dogs and good vibes... but still... Doggy Dan is the man...

A bit preachy

Zak has great training ideas and videos on YouTube, but this book, especially the first five chapters, is a bit tedious and preachy. It doesn't get into any of the good training stuff till later in the book. I'd be cautious about buying this book if you have read other Dog-Training books.

Nothing Revolutionary

4/5 of the book was about preparing for getting a dog. I've an experienced pet owner and was interested in "revolution"ary tips. Nothing new here folks. I was very disappointed.

Excellent! Highly recommend to any new dog owner!

Zak George is one of the most engaging and effective dog trainers I've seen in the public eye. His complete immersion in positive reinforcement training is so refreshing and highly successful. I discovered his book as a result of finding his YouTube channel. While training dogs via positive reinforcement training is a philosophy I already embraced, his ability to communicate how to utilize this training method is thorough, yet easy to understand. I would highly recommend this book to any person who is bringing home a new puppy or adult dog in to their lives. The audio narration of this book is pleasant, enjoyable and feels "comfortable and fitting." When you pair this book with the wonderful videos on his YouTube channel, you've got a fantastic combination. I think that most people will still benefit from working with group/private training classes at their local dog training facility that incorporates this same philosophy (simply for the benefit of having a skilled trainer guide you through the individual issues your dog may struggle with during training), but the information learned in this book is incredibly valuable and will set you up on a path towards success. I can't speak highly enough of this book and have already recommended it to friends. Thanks Zak for the wonderful resource! What you do is valued and appreciated!

I disagree

Positive training is great. Beyond that the author breezes by dog on dog aggression. The only important thing he says in that section is "if you think you need a professional you probably do". How profound.

He also sounds like a shill for vets. Almost anything going on with your dog is answered by "take him to the vet". The substance seemed small and involved the actual method for training. The rest was him trying to be funny, coy or philosophical.

I would not advise this for new dog owners. If you follow this books advice you will be spending so much money on vet bills that you may not be able to afford your new dog. Puppies and grown up dogs tend to vomit at times. It is not indicative of a medical emergency. Just like a human. "Better safe than sorry" is often a thin mask for those who profit from your fear/concern. This author should stay on target and talk training.

waste of time

basically a few hours of very padded out common sense stuff which I thought we took for granted. turns out my dog must be a genius because there is nothing this book can give a head start on. he is 9 weeks so I think I'll go with the book being useless.

gutted disappointed

I brought this book off the back of the reviews left by others and by watching some of Zaks U-tube videos. most people seek help because either the dog is causing harm ie aggressive behaviour or being a nuisance and both behaviours Zak wasn't informative. instead I found him misleading his reader by repeatedly saying that he'll cover those topics further in chapter 7 only then to brush over it briefly giving no advice how to deal with the early signs of aggression before it becomes problematic instead he then goes on to advising his reader to get professional advice.

Most likely, the best dog book you will ever read

I have read more than 25 books about dogs. Zak’s book includes the most recent findings about how dogs think and presents exercises and methodologies that respect these findings. Also, you can feel Zak’s energy and dedication which is a great motivation. Just buy it!

Good complete guide

if you want a one stop guide to training and owning a dog, this is one one

As a UK listener, it's very "American" which you'd expect but once you get past that lots of good advice.

A lot of it is common sense, but I've also learnt that common sense isn't common so well worth a listen!!

mostly common sense

More than half of the book is complete common sense and was pretty much useless to us. The emphasis is not on specific and practical advice but mostly broad basics that are too general.

Useless for people who have read other books

The book might be useful for someone who doesn't know or hasn't read anything about dogs - they could find some basic information that any book about dog training would provide. However, if this is not your first book about dogs - don't bother. I find the book focused on the hype about positive training and the so-called "revolution" is nothing but attempts to be moderna and controversial, denying basic principles that work. Some of the advice is simply wrong. I couldn't find any information about the author's training or significant experience with dogs. He often says "I haven't met a dog who wouldn't respond to...." - well, I've got that dog. My dog is a sweet miniature poodle puppy, 5 months old, high energy dog and quite a lot of the advice that Zak gives for such dogs is absolutely not what works for him. One example - authors who based their advice on science or significant experience, agree that with this type of dogs, more exercise is NOT the answer to stop unwanted behaviour as exercising such a dog more gives you a fitter dog who can continue unwanted behaviour for longer. There are other examples, of course. I did not learn anything useful. Don't waste your time.

too repetitive

very repetitive, talked alot about what you were going to cover and not actually get to the point.
I skipped to chapter 6(actually 4) and you were still covering the same stuff from the previous ones, the sample sounded good.... I don't need help with choosing a pup or setting up, wanted extra tips on training... wasted a credit on this

Good book for the average dog owner

I'd give this book 8/10. If you are about to be a first time dog owner you will learn a lot of good information. Dogs take time to look after (a lot of time if you live in a city and rely on walks for simulation and exercise). If you've listened to this book then get a dog there shouldn't usually be too many surprises for most people. From personal experience though, a properly formulated raw food diet (they are commercially available from certified pet nutritionists) will make your dog fitter and healthier and the fact there are no 'studies' about that according to this book just shows the pet food companies know it's true and therefore won't 'study' it. Racing greyhounds eat raw for a reason and keep their hormones for a reason too. They would be athletically useless for racing without those things. Please consider desexing methods that do not remove your dogs hormones and look into the impact of endocrine conditions when hormones are removed. Greyhound vets will do a vascectomy for a reasonable rate and non hormone removing desexing for female dogs is possible too. If you have to chop bits off your dog so you can manage them that dog was not for you. Greyhound racing for money/gambling is terrible but it offers an excellent way to study how hormones and food affect a dog's physical health. It is not hard to get raw food with all the necessary nutrients but it is true an improperly formulated raw diet is the worst and would maybe kill your dog eventually.
