Beyond Expectation Amazing!

I've read many books and articles on publishing, so I go into every new material with a raised eye brow. There is SO much bad, misleading, and unhelpful information on this topic that it leads many authors down the wrong path. NOT SO WITH THIS! This was a thorough, entertaining, and intriguing book/class on the publishing industry. Jane is AWESOME! she does a great job being unbiased in giving information about trade publishing and self publishing. This information she gives is accurate and up-to-date and she gives it in an energetic and encouraging way. I HIGHLY recommend this book for writers in all ends of the spectrum of publishing. I for one am inspired and encouraged to keep writing. This is one of the best investments I made for my career. Check it out for yourself.

Hands down - Fabulous

What did you love best about How to Publish Your Book?

I work with authors every day, plus I teach a quarterly course called "How to Publish Your Book" which is only 3 hours -- so I frequently recommend books for them to read. This is my new "go-to" book. Excellent content, not stuffy or favoring one method over another, and comprehensive but not too much to consume. Great job!

What other book might you compare How to Publish Your Book to and why?

Truthfully, I've read nearly everything on this subject because it is what I do every day. Not only is this one more comprehensive, but it is well written. I can't compare it to one book because it covers so many books.

Have you listened to any of Professor Jane Friedman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

There was no way to listen to it in one sitting -- however, I was driving many times while listening and she said something I wanted to write down. There were many instances where I thought "I wish there was a reference sheet" or some other way to get her suggestions on paper so I could remember to read. I was so pleased when I saw that a download of the printed book came with the purchase. Well cone!

Any additional comments?

I love her tone of voice in this audiobook -- it's very personal and personable. High marks Professor! Also, it was very up to date compared to many of these books. And she never once recommended that someone could write a book in 3 days or some other crazy idea like so many books do today.

Informative, helpful

What about Professor Jane Friedman’s performance did you like?

Professor Friedman does a good job guiding one through the ins and outs of publishing.Sometimes disappointingly realistic, she nevertheless offers encouragement and a clear roadmap.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from How to Publish Your Book?

Spend more time preparing.

Any additional comments?

Her tendency to end sentences with a questioning tone was a bit distracting.

The Real Deal

This is the true insiders view to the whole publishing system, from A-Z. I think all writers wanting to publish a book, but for the very most published of authors, would benefit from listening to this. Yes, if you are in it for the business, there will be some things you know, but there will be much you learn.

Touches all the bases on Print, bit less w/E-books

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I found the speaker to be effective and that she conveyed emphasis and opinion where needed.

What other book might you compare How to Publish Your Book to and why?

Comparable in quality to others in the Great Courses series.

What about Professor Jane Friedman’s performance did you like?

Depth of knowledge which includes dos as well as don'ts.

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

No one thing in particular, rather - that the entire process is quite a bit more complicated than I had envisioned. I feel like I have a better chance of creating and publishing both print books and e-books after hearing these lectures.

Any additional comments?

Great stuff. Thank you.

Excellent

Really good review of trad publishing. If you're looking at self-pub, this probably isn't what you're interested in. It has a good mix of fiction and non fiction tips, and I really enjoyed listening to this.

Absolutely Fantastic

I have read so many books on how to publish my book but this one goes into great detail on every process. It has been so incredibly helpful and current since it was written recently. Everyone really must buy this book if they can't decide on self publishing or traditional publishing.

An Actual Peak Behind the Curtain

This course is long overdue. Everyone knows that there are really two industries for writers, the one that exists in the rosy imagination of an aspiring author, and the one that exists in the real world. They rarely meet. If you're reading this, then you must have some interest at one day writing a book. Well, if so, then you're just like me. Professor Jane Friedman tells you pretty much everything you need to know with practical and sympathetic advice. She knows what we EXPECT the industry to be and she knows how difficult it is for writers to adjust to the reality of a massive global industry populated by countless other professionals. So, here it is...eleven-and-a-half hours of 21st Century reality, passed on to you by an industry insider. You'll hear her explain how all the gears of the great and mysterious publishing machine work. She covers fiction authors and non-fiction authors...and she covers traditional publishing and self-publishing avenues. She's up front that publishing is an industry in transition and today's author has many more options with many new risks. If you are serious about writing a book and if you plan on making reality an ally, then this course is for you. And thanks to Audible.com for making courses like this one available! Enjoy!

An essential tool for first-time authors

I shudder to think that I might have ventured into the world of publishing without first reading Professor Friedman' s comprehensive 'how to' guide. Thank you sincerely. Nuala Macklin
