Publisher's summary

In a brilliant homage to Agatha Christie, critically acclaimed author Tasha Alexander sends Lady Emily to Egypt during British colonial rule to investigate a crime that leads back to the era of the Pharaohs.

In Secrets of the Nile, Lady Emily and her husband, Colin Hargreaves, have joined his formidable mother on a holiday to visit the exotic treasures of Egypt. Their host, Lord Bertram Deeley, is a renowned amateur British collector of antiquities, who has invited his closest friends on a lavish cruise up the Nile to his home at Luxor. But on the first night of their journey, he suddenly collapses after offering a welcome toast, a victim of the lethal poison cyanide. Who amongst this group of his nearest and dearest would want to kill their generous host?

Emily and Colin’s investigation soon reveals that even his closest friends had reasons to want him dead: was it the archeologist whose dig Deeley was poised to fund until he suddenly withdrew support? The powerful politician whose career Deeley had secretly destroyed? The dyspeptic aristocratic English spinster whose hired travelling companion seems determined to protect her employer? Or could it be Mrs. Hargreaves herself, who may have spurned the advances of Lord Deeley when they were both younger?

A key clue may lie with several ancient ushabtis, exquisite three-thousand-year-old sculptures that played a role in a hidden story from the time of Ancient Egypt, one of a sister’s unshakeable loyalty to her brother, a tale of betrayal and revenge. In an unforgettable finale, Emily and Colin gather their fellow travelers together to unmask a killer whose motive is as shocking as it is brilliant.

Complex

This book has complex family interactions and a tangled mystery. I loved the setting and truly enjoyed the two story time periods. The investigation was great with tons of details and a wonderful revelation at the end. The ending for this book was hilarious. The narrator is excellent.

Perhaps my favorite (so far!)

I was nervous to read this one because of my deep love of the Amelia Peabody series and worried I wouldn’t love Lady Emily’s take on Egypt as much as I do Amelia and her crew. I’m so glad I didn’t let my apprehension keep me away- and I loved the 10ish nods to Amelia, her family and their time in Egypt throughout the story. Tasha Alexander did a wonderful job honoring Amelia without putting Emily in her shadow.

I was also pleasantly (!!) surprised that Colin appears to have stopped questioning Emily so much, and appreciating her and her views more. All and all I loved the story, and cannot wait for the next one. Oh, and of course, Bianca Amato is fabulous in her expression of each character- and may even have me liking Kat a bit more!

Intriguing mystery

I love Tasha Alexander's writing she pulls you into her story. in this story there is tangible evidence the most all of the invited guests has cause to murder their host. Can Lady Emily solve this mystery.

Wonderful story teller. Fabulous narrator.

I’ve read every one of her books starting from the very beginning. The characters are very engaging, intelligent, loving supportive. The stories are always well put together, and in the leader books, she starts adding a understory that has something to do with the history of the location of her current stories. Very in, interesting. I continue to look forward to each of her new additions to the series.

Love her books

Let very her books, however this one was a disappointment in comparison to the others. Very slow and not much intrigue.
