Story
According to Steven Pinker in his new book, Enlightenment Now, the best time is precisely now. The only thing holding us back is waking up to it. Lest we forget, we are the lucky 8 billion who have been favored to be born human. We are, in sum, winners in the Darwinian lottery of life. This audiobook provides an illustrated glimpse into Pinker's idea that things have gotten better on planet Earth. Also provides new insights into a concept called "The Meta-Person Project".

Story
I first critiqued Ken Wilber on his misunderstanding of evolution back in 1996, right after his book A Brief History of Everything was published. It has now been 18 years and if anything, Wilber has become even more firmly entrenched in his new brand of creationism, which ironically mimics much of what Christian fundamentalists object to about Darwinianism.

I give this illustration to my students because a winning lottery number exponentially pales in comparison to the odds against them being alive and breathing (even if they nod off a bit here and there) at this very juncture in history. The human brain, he argues, is a complex system that not only tells time but creates it; it constructs our sense of chronological flow and enables "mental time travel" - simulations of future and past events.

Not Interesting
What would have made Churchland Controversy better?
The content is weak.
What could David Christopher Lane have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
He is fine, it's the content. It's mundane, with a heavy liberal slant and bias. Boring. Predictable.
Any additional comments?
Premise: "Be tolerant, but only if you think like me. If you don't you aren't tolerant." Yawn.

discombobulated
This constituted a discombobulated attempt by a reductionist (Lane) to defend another reductionist (Churchland) in a squabble she had with a podcaster during an interview. All in all, both the podcaster AND Churchland do not end up looking very good after all the facts are in. EG Churchland who first (mis)quotes a study, then backtracks claiming she was referencing a second study BUT she paraphrases the first one. Gibberish.
