Publisher's Summary

A new novel by Terry Brooks is always a cause for celebration. For more than 20 years, the best selling author of the classic Shannara epic has proven himself one of the modern masters of fantasy, winning the hearts and minds of devoted listeners around the world. In his last acclaimed novel, Ilse Witch, a brave company of explorers led by the last Druid, Walker Boh, traveled across unknown seas in search of an elusive magic. Yet perhaps Walker and his team were lured there for sinister, unforeseen purposes...

Now, in Antrax, as the crew aboard the Jerle Shannara is attacked by evil forces, the Druid's protege, Bek Rowe, and his companions are pursued by the mysterious Ilse Witch. Meanwhile, Walker is alone, caught in a dark maze beneath the ruined city of Castledown, stalked by a hungry, unseen enemy.

For there is something alive in Castledown. Something not human. Something old beyond reckoning that covets the magic of Druids, elves, even the Ilse Witch. Something that hunts men for its own designs: Antrax. It is a spirit that commands ancient technologies and mechanical monsters, feeds off enchantment, and traps the souls of men.

Good story but only Abridge

What would have made The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara better?

I really wanted to purchase the unabridged version of this book. Since one was not available, I had no choice to buy this one. Hence my overall rating is two stars. I feel the abridge version cuts out too many important parts of the story

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Using logic, one can easily figure out the ending. Since it is part of a series, there is an element of continuation of the story and not really an ending.

Which character – as performed by Charles Keating – was your favorite?

Walker

What character would you cut from The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara?

none

Any additional comments?

Make an unabridged version

abridged

disappointed again an abridged book. Terry Brooks is an amazing writer of fantasy fiction and what ever bean counters thought it would good to shorten a story like this should be fired

Gave it a 3

Because it was abridged and it felt like it was missing stuff. This narrator was better than the narrator on the previous book though

The abridged books are ok but not great

Some of the pronunciations of words are off when compared to the unabridged books, I would recommend that terry brooks speak with the narrators prior to recording, so uniformity can be maintained.

Good

This story is not quite as good as the Ilse Witch, but it is still really good and is worth a listen to, the reading is fair could be a little better not much difference in character voices, but I still love the shannara books.

Lots of words, but mostly boring.

Terry has done the one thing every writer fears doing... he's dulled. His writing used to be full of such life, his stories dripping with adventure. Where's it all gone? The store-line perhaps is brilliant, but the follow-through is just sad. He skims over sections that could have made great stories and settles down for several chapters on scenes that don't help the plot, instead just contain interesting moments. As soon as a scene starts to get into plot, he drops it and begins to narrate it to us as if we're children who can't understand.

I've always love the shannara series, and the great work he's done in addition, but this is just not his normal stuff.

If you've not read anything else of Terry's, don't read this first or you'lll never come back.

Abridged...not as good

I don't appreciate abridged audio books, I don't see the purpose, but since there seems to be no other legal copies, this was the better one. I enjoyed the story and the performance, I just wanted more details.

Worst narrator ever!!!

First off audible has none of this series in in unabridged form which is absolutely ridiculous! You can tell that half of the book is missing and it really takes away from the story. And to top that the narrator by far probably the worst I have listened to! He doesn’t really use any different voices for the characters and reads so monotone that you find it very hard to get into the story at all. I almost didn’t finish this book because I couldn’t stand listening to him. But the worst was the guy couldn’t pronounce anyones name right! The Shannra books have been around for a long time and family names have carried on through all the books like Ohmsford and Lee bust he can’t pronounce any of them right! He calls Lee “Leer” ?!?!? I didn’t know who he was talking about! And the majority of the time when he was reading a part I didn’t know who he was talking about because he changed all the names to something else entirely which absolutely destroyed what could have been a really good book! The narrator was trash and I hope I never have to listen to him again!

Antrax

Loved this book. Excitement from the beginning. Continues on where the previous book left off. Hope the third book is as good.
