Publisher's Summary

In a future where time travel has been outlawed, a black market exists for anyone with the money, connections, and nerve to request items from days past. As a Runner for one of the underground syndicates that now controls the timewaves, Stassi 2446-89 has seen it all: the fall of Rome, the rise of Hitler, the end of democracy, the establishment of time tourism, and the devastating consequences of it. Her job is to seamlessly slip through the past, in search of items of value to the syndicate's clientele.

Stassi's next assignment takes her to Paris in the 1920s in search of a lost manuscript by one of the 20th century's greatest writers. She and her partner, Gaige, are swept up in the City of Light during the height of fashion and culture - as alluring a locale as they've ever visited. But a seedier side of life lurks beneath the glamorous facade, and the pair quickly learns this run is more dangerous than any of their previous missions.

Because history isn't playing out as it should be - a first for the syndicate. When the stakes are raised and it becomes a matter of life or death, Stassi and Gaige must ultimately decide how far they're willing to go to ensure the future as they know it.

    "Good story, worst narration ever!"

The book itself is pretty good - the time travel element isn't really the key to the plot - it's more of a mystery/period piece/thriller - but I can see how the time travel element will work well with the longer story arc of the series.
The problem is a narrator with robotic intonation, putting emphasis on all the wrong words, reading deadpan and mispronouncing many words - not just the foreign language ones but also many English ones. Production quality is also low, with several examples of poor sound editing when the narrator stumbled and repeated phrases, plus pauses between chapters that varied between what one would normally expect in an audiobook and long enough to make me check my phone to make sure it hadn't stopped.
I have listened to thousands of audiobooks, and normally don't leave reviews, but this one was irritating enough to get me motivated. I really want to listen to the next book in this series....but only with a different narrator and a real production company!

    "Awful narration"

I turned it off after less than seven minutes of the narrator's sing sing voice that went up and down on random phrases in the middle of every sentence. the little bit of the story I caught sounded interesting, but I can't really say.

"A compeling story that can be enthralling."

It has been so hard for me to write a review for this book due to the mixed feelings I have towards many aspects of the book. The story is extremely long and the only way I finished it was because it was read to me. That being said, it was extremely hard to listen to at times due to the narrators voices that just seemed odd at times. If you enjoy extremely scattered plots with lots of odd things thrown in this is a book to listen to. What could of made it better was focusing in on key points and not having as many tangents. What caught my attention with this story was that its a time traveling book and finding artifacts and looking into her missing past. I could of done with less serial killer nonsense.

I received a copy of this audiobook for free in exchange for an honest review.

"Really good story - Audio quality needs work"
    Any additional comments?

An interesting, entertaining and enjoyable time travel murder mystery thriller. Unfortunately the audio errors take away from the overall enjoyment. It's hard to be completely pulled into a story when the audio quality/errors keep pulling you out.

The story itself is well written, creative, visually descriptive and very detailed. The possibilities for interesting new adventures are endless with the time travel aspect in the series. I really enjoyed the fact that this story stuck to one time period instead of skipping around.

While the story is full of mystery and intrigue with a bit of romance, the suspense builds very slowly as the story unfolds. The story does keep you guessing with plenty of twists. There are several different story-lines going on at the same time which should keep the story constantly moving forward but there were times especially in the beginning it felt like the story wasn't moving at all.

Great cast of well rounded and interesting characters. Gaige and Stassi are friends who act like brother and sister. Loved the humor, banter and true friendship between them. Really like that they are not love interests for each other. They are true platonic friends who trust and look out for each other on or off a mission. That could possibly change in the future but I hope not.

The Syndicate is a black market business specializing in retrieving any item from any time period. As long as someone can afford the price the syndicate will retrieve an item from it's last know whereabouts. Their job is to achieve their objective, retrieve the item and not affect the timeline in anyway. It can be a very dangerous job. Especially when things don't always go as planned. Gage and Stassi's latest mission isn't turning out as planned. Caught up in the middle of a murder investigation. Gage becomes the prime suspect. How far are they willing to go to finish their mission and insure the current timeline remains intact.

Andrea Harbin does the narration for this story. This is the first time I have heard her narrate a book. While there are several issues I will address below, her narration overall was very enjoyable. She has a pleasant voice. Easy to listen to for long periods of time. Clearly spoken with a nice even pace. Some really good character voices. There are times she needs to put a little more "life" into her narration. The way she narrates is very "soothing" which limits the amount of time you want to spend listening in one sitting. With just a few changes she could be a really great narrator. I would listen to her narrate other audiobooks.

Issues - The quality of the audio is inconsistent and changes throughout the story. There are many times it sounds "hollow". The introduction of each new chapter is at a different volume level. Some of the errors in the audio quality I was able to write down at the time were static in background of Chapter 7. Chapter 19 at little over 7 minutes in something is missing (a line)? in the narration the conversation changes abruptly. Chapter 20 repeated line close to the end. Chapter 23 repeated line. Several more times throughout the book words were repeated I couldn't always write them down.

Before an audio is released it should be checked. It is a huge disappointment when there are this many errors in a book. I would return the book based on this many errors.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher.

"Very fun start to a time travel series"
Would you listen to The Syndicate again? Why?

Absolutely. This was a great start to a very fun time travel series. The history involved in the creation was spot on and I greatly appreciated that it was about one specific jump rather than a multitude of jumps and times.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Charles was by far my favorite character. There is so much mystery and intrigue surrounding him and the cliffhanger that was left has made me impatient to find out the rest of his story.

    Which scene was your favorite?

    Spoiler ahead:

I enjoyed the scene between Stassi and Charles in his car following their visit to Worshanski. Both of them were hesitant of the other, realizing that they both were using each other. It was great that they realized beyond that manipulation that they truly had feelings for each other and eventually went into a frenzy to the point they forgot they were in a car, hitting the e brake and rolling down the hill. All I could think, was oh god not the car!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The strong relationship between Stassi and Gaige was apparent and their bond and loyalty was very touching. It is rare to find a novel where the characters are truly platonic and finding lovers elsewhere with little drama. I hope this relationship holds as in and does not turn into a love triangle or quad.

"Good, with a few technical hitches"
    Any additional comments?

NOTE: I received a copy of this audiobook for free in exchange for a fair review.

This is a solid story, could maybe be trimmed a bit, but the characters are well done, and I think the story is an interesting one, despite often not liking time-travel stories myself. (which makes sense in this case being that the time travel isn't crucial to the plot). I think you can feel that the author is having a good time, and really enjoyed the period the story is set in.

The narration is a mixed bag. I'm not exactly sure what the reason is, but the quality of the narration varies widely. When the narrator is doing character dialogue, she does a great job. The character voices and acting is handled well, both male and female voices sound good. When she does the non-dialogue sections, she often she uses a stiff narration that pauses in the middle of phrases and is confusing to listen to.

BUT, this is only for the first third of the book or so, the narration (of non-dialogue) does shift into a more natural style over the course of the book. So it's a little hard to rate the narration. Sometimes it dips into 2 star territory, but the majority of the book is 4 stars (very good, with a few minor issues).

    Story
    "A fun ride through time..."
    Any additional comments?

I am unfortunately drawn to stories involving time travel. I say that because in far too many movies and television shows, time travel is an abused plot device used by the author to make a story lacking imagination more interesting. 'The Syndicate' does not suffer from this problem.

The story was one longer than many books, the extra length dedicated to more background storytelling that I found refreshing. Too many books today are formula driven to tell a story quickly and align for a sequel. While it appears there may be a sequel to this book, and I'd like to see one, it didn't feel predestined from the first page like many books seem to.

Time travel is definitely an element of the story, but Paris of the past is the major part of the book. I wasn't quite sure what to expect until a quarter, or maybe a third of the way through the book when certain surprises popped up that turned this casual story about time travelers going to the past to collect certain works into a thriller I didn't want to put down.

The narrator was quite good. I always find it impressive when a single narrator is able to pull off several voices, male and female. I did notice some distracting mispronunciations such as "disheveled" and "Versailles" of note. In some chapters there was an annoying background noise (a fan maybe?) that made an otherwise really good narrator sound a bit low production.

I am looking forward to the next in the series.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

"Look forward to getting lost in time"

I was gifted this audio ARC from the author for a honest and unbiased review

The Syndicate was very well written. It's about a group of elite thieves who use time travel to steal valuable artifacts from different periods in time
The beginning of the book didn't make me want to listen for more but I waited 5 minutes and it was great.
Imagine being able to take a trip back in time to the roaring 20s in Paris. Well this book takes you there.
Andrea Harbin did a fantastic job with the reading of the book.
I highly recommend this book for your next read.
