Publisher's Summary

With unforgettable characters, a sweeping backdrop, and passionate storytelling, this is a fantasy debut to rival that of Robert Jordan. Filled with adventure and bloodshed, pageantry and piracy, mystery and menace, Assassin's Apprentice is the story of a royal house and the young man who is destined to chart its course through tempests of change. Young Fitz is the bastard son of the noble Prince Chivalry, raised in the shadow of the royal household by his father's gruff stableman. An outcast whose existence has forced his father to abdicate his claim on the throne, Fitz is ignored by all royalty except the devious King Shrewd, who has him secretly tutored in the arts of the assassin. For in the young man's blood is a heritage of magic, the talent called the Skill, as well as another, even more mysterious ability.

As barbarous raiders ravage the coasts and leave behind the zombie-like husks of the townspeople to prowl the countryside, Fitz is growing toward manhood. Soon he will face his first dangerous, soul-shattering mission, a mission that poses as much a threat to himself as it does for his target---for Fitz is a threat to the throne...but he may also be the key to the survival of the kingdom.

What the Critics Say

“Intriguing, controlled, and remarkably assured...at once satisfyingly self-contained yet leaving plenty of scope for future extensions and embellishments.” (Kirkus)

"I am lost and weary and so as the author..."
What did you like best about The Farseer: Assassin's Apprentice? What did you like least?

Spoiler alert!!! An interesting beginning got unwound by lots of dead dogs who are coming to life and no, dead again! To kill or not to kill, to learn or not to learn, to teach or not to teach...indecision is a theme through the book.Weird ending and a disturbing overuse of "weary" and it's variations.

    "Terrible "

This was the saddest most boring piece of fantasy ever. I understand when it was written but still no excuse. Fitz might be the worst “hero” ever. Story had no depth. The bad guys were threatening at all. I could not even figure out what was the point of the story other than to talk about a pathetic bastard. I can’t believe there are more of these books. Please don’t waste your time reading this. Read a dictionary or anything else.

"Great book with a slow start"

The first three hours of the book moves slowly and has a weak storyline to draw you in. After that, the story ramps up to a very nice climax. I enjoyed the book although I hope the next escalates more quickly.

    "Good but not Epic"

I felt it was a bit slow and that the protagonist failed too much. I never really got hooked into the story line because it tended to meander too much.

Story was amazing and left me wanting more. It's good to listen to a book that draws you in this much. Especially when you are able to invest yourself into one character.

    "Performance Too Slow "

This one is one of those theatrical reading performances that is usually a perfect fit for fantasy but here it didn't work. The reading was too slow.

However it is not just on the reader. The novel didn't work for me overall. Some parts of it were touching and emotional but the rest were kind of hollow. Uneven.

    "Terrible rendition"

I'm depressed regarding this performance of an amazing epic story. I have read all of a Robin Hobb's books. This is another example of a horrible rendition of someone with a gloppy English accent destroying an amazing story. Bad. Disappointing. Heart breaking.
