Publisher's Summary

The third book of epic conflicts and arcane intrigue in New York Times best-selling author Anthony Ryan's Draconis Memoria series.

For hundreds of years, the Ironship Trading Syndicate was fueled by drake blood - and protected by the Blood-blessed, those few who could drink it and wield fearsome powers. But now the very thing that sustained the corporate world threatens to destroy it.

A drake of unimaginable power has risen, and it commands an army of both beasts and men. Rogue Blood-blessed Claydon Torcreek, Syndicate agent Lizanne Lethridge, and Ironship captain Corrick Hilemore, spread to disparate corners of the world, must rely upon the new powers and knowledge they have gained at great price to halt its forces - or face the end of all they know.

Great Conclusion

A great way to end a very interesting epic in a great world. Anthony Ryan deserves more credit in this day and age. When it comes to world building, he's right up there with the best today.

Was Skeptical...

I was skeptical about picking up this series (The Draconis Memoria) because I thought the the author's previous series (Blood Song) grew weaker with each successive book.

This series (The Draconis Memoria) however, mainlined my interest. The character development is quite impressive and the story moves along at an appropriately suspenseful pace.

For want of a tail spear, humanity was saved

The three primary protagonists (Lizanne, Clay and Hilemore) continue to play crucial, yes disparate, roles through the end with each encountering several seeming insurmountable confrontations along the way. Anthony Ryan also made the secondary character arcs play meaningful roles throughout. The ending was complete, if a bit too open-ended, with respects to the characters and the complete story arc but not regrettably so.

Of all the character roles, I found Hilemore's portrayal the most interesting. His disposition is portrayed expertly as a dispassionate, duty-bound captain similarly as that of Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness) in the movie "Bridge Over River Kwai".

Steve West's performance was masterful throughout.

best book in the series.

He really knows how to end a series with a bang... or two... or 10.
