Publisher's Summary

Laid out upon these frail leaves is a banquet of delectable misfortunes and savory tragedies. Partake of these melancholy morsels of bile and brine, of wrath and regret. Sample vintages of fermented tears and distilled blood. Lick the sharp edges of cursed blades, and nibble frail hopes set on platters of tarnished silver. Strange sorrows warp the palette of perception and bring about subtle ruin and uncanny vigor. Indulge in the filling robustness of Tainted Steel.

I've got tainted love for these tainted tales

Tainted Steel: Tales of the Weird and Woeful is a collection of short stories, just under 20 in total, that lives up to its name. The writing is great, and the stories most definitely entertain and captivate the listener. The stories are short, and this is a good thing. They come in, pack a punch, and move on so that you are ready for the next gut punch or ear twist. The writing style is sublime, and some of these stories feel like they have been around for hundreds of years, and yet they do not seem stale or as if they don't belong in the present day. Each one clocks in under 20 minutes for the most part.

Montooth is amazing. Audiobooks live and die by their narrators, and he gives this book a real flavor that plain text cannot convey. He is a fantastic reader, and his talent for weaving words that act like earworms burrowing into your mind is just plain scary. He does a phenomenal job keeping you listening.

5 Stars all around.

Perfectly Re-readable

The stories told within the confines of this book vary in the effect they have on the reader. The narrator was a perfect choice for this reading. Both the author and narrator make me want to experience these stories over and over. I was asked if I have a favorite story amongst them; I cannot decide. They are all entertaining and, in most cases, surprising. If it were possible to wear out the audio track, I am most certain that I would be the one to do it.

Short dark fantasy stories

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was definitely weird and oddly intriguing. A short collection of dark fairy tales. It's short, but entertaining.

Twisted Tales

I wasn't sure what to expect when I requested to review this audiobook, but the description intrigued me. The audiobook is true to the description. These tales are definitely wicked and woeful, twisted and tormented, sometimes deliciously so. If you like off-beat, dark fairy tales, this audiobook is for you. I enjoyed these tales, and the narration suited the content. The delivery was well-paced and the voices matched the atmosphere of the stories.

Set of Very Short Stories

I got this ARC via audiobook boom. This is a set of very short stories about people with swords. At times I thought they were poems but then there was no rhyme with them. The narration was the only thing I was sure of. and it was good. They were indeed weird just as the title implied.

Excellent performance of entertaining stories

What did you love best about Tainted Steel?

Once I got used to the idea that the book is truly a collection of short stories, I really start to appreciate each unique story. Some are happy, some sad and everywhere in between. It was a pleasant mix.

What does Danny Montooth bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Each story is performed with its specific tone and content taken into consideration. Danny Montooth really seemed to have planned out each story to ensure each was portrayed in the way it was meant to be, rather than using the same exact style for each.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, the stories were brief and light, but still interesting. It went by faster than I expected it to.

Any additional comments?

I generally like books that tell a single, well detailed and developed story. However, these short stories held my attention. They shared a common theme throughout, but at the same time, all of the stories were distinctly unique. It was a pleasant surprise.

I requested a copy of this book in exchange for writing an unbiased review.
