Publisher's summary

One secret - devastating consequences.

Jack Elliot isn't an ex-cop or marine. He doesn't know martial arts, hand-to-hand combat, or even how to fight. He's just a journalist from Montreal returning home to NYC to pay respect to a dying uncle.

An uncle with a secret.

It isn't long before Jack is twisted into a plot so thick with murder, mystery, and deceit that he's racing just as hard to save his life as he is to find the truth.

If you like fast-paced action thrillers twisted with mystery and hidden truth like novels by Dan Brown, Clive Cussler, and James Rollins, then you'll love the first installment in Dean Kutzler's Jack Elliot series.

Jack and the Bene Elohim

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Probably not, but only because the mystery books I like my friends often don’t. Everyone is comparing this to Dan Brown’s book and while I did read that, I did it begrudgingly. I would be more inclined to recommend this book over “The Da Vinci Code.”

Who was your favorite character and why?
Harold the cabbie. He just seemed like what I would expect a typical cabbie to be. Enjoyed their drive time banter and the rest of their interactions.

Who was your least character and why?
Moe. I assume he is a grown adult and said cray cray. I cannot stand that word.

What about Tom Lennon’s performance did you like?
I enjoyed his voice and thought his cadence and tone was good for the story. I did notice that he mispronounced a few words which bothered me. Every now and then I thought someone else was narrating the story so he had some accents that totally threw me off which was a nice bonus.

Well-crafted and thought-provoking.

For readers who enjoyed "The Da Vinci Code,"  Brownstone is sure to delight. Jack Elliott is a journalist who unwittingly becomes the target of an ancient covert religious order. Tripping through present-day New York City, he uncovers evidence of a centuries-old coverup that could rock the foundations of Christianity. He also learns of dark family secrets which cause him to question many of his beliefs. And all the while, he's being hunted down like prey.

The beginning moved a little slowly for my taste, but it picked up speed before midway through. The ending left me feeling satisfied, whilst setting the stage for the next installment (which I'm yearning to begin). Narrator, Tom Lennon, does a marvelous job here. There were a couple of mispronounced words (such as "carotid"), but in no way did they affect the context or my understanding of the story. I increased the narration speed to 1.05%. Overall, very well done!

Solid and enjoyable, as usual

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Nothing particular, but constantly twisting plot, lots of suspense, and plenty to keep you engaged.

Didn't thrill me as much as I wanted it to.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Once again, similar to other, recent offerings, this book could do with some aggressive editing. It is admittedly interesting, but the author strives very hard to be hyper detailed, and the net effect is more verbose than necessary.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Story is solid, the framework is there, it just needs some trimming.

Did Tom Lennon do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes, a solid, if workmanlike effort. The character of Jack is actually quite strong and will likely stand the test a series delivers.

Was Brownstone worth the listening time?

Background stuff. Nominally yes.

Any additional comments?

I was provided this book by the author in exchange for this review. This is the start of what promises to be a solid series. As there is a great deal of groundwork to set up, it could be looked at as too wordy, and detailed, but understandably so.

Recommended with those reservations.

I enjoyed the twists and turns this book provided. The magic and religious beliefs intertwine.

Yes. This is another great read from Mr. Lennon. He always brings the characters to life.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, it's a little to long for one sitting.

‘I loved this book, it twisted and turned me until I was as tightly wound as a corkscrew! A chilling tale that will have you terrified to answer a knock at your door. I mean seriously don't read this book in the dark on your own! … I literally could not put this book down.’

Jack was my favorite character because he has a whimsical personality.

Very Listenable. Good Lead. needs plot development

Where does Brownstone rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It is very listenable. In my opinion, it needs a bit more polish regards plot. It's complicated. With that being said, I can picture this as a great series in coming works. Jack Elliot is likeable.

If you’ve listened to books by Dean Kutzler before, how does this one compare?

I haven't. His work is promising though.

What does Tom Lennon bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I have listened to many of Tom Lennon's Audible projects. I have nothing but praise for his abilities. He can conjure distinctive voices for individual characters. He can convey emotions - fear, stress, excitement, etc. as demanded by the writer. Pleasant voice, easily understandable and most importantly, as I've aged, he speaks clearly.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I had to go back and repeat sections. Sometimes I lost the "gist" of the story. That's what I mean regarding a bit more polish being needed. Not sure I can explain it any better.

Any additional comments?

This can be compared to works by Dan Brown. It is an enjoyable listen.

Dean Kutzler has talent. Tom Lennon is always a pleasure to listen to. I was able to finish listening to Brownstone. I will keep an eye out for more in this series.

Thanks for the opportunity to review it!

This review copy audiobook was provided by the narrator at no cost. Which I can only assume was voluntary on his part. I am happy to give my honest review of it. I think I'm suppose to mention how reviewing this was voluntary on my part too.

THANK YOU TOM LENNON!
