Publisher's Summary

One boy. One dragon. A world of adventure.

When Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy; perhaps it will buy his family meat for the winter. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself.

Overnight his simple life is shattered, and he is thrust into a perilous new world of destiny, magic, and power. With only an ancient sword and the advice of an old storyteller for guidance, Eragon and the fledgling dragon must navigate the dangerous terrain and dark enemies of an Empire ruled by a king whose evil knows no bounds.

Can Eragon take up the mantle of the legendary Dragon Riders? The fate of the Empire may rest in his hands.

Be sure to listen to Eldest, the sequel to Eragon.

Critic Reviews

"It's an impressive start to a writing career that's sure to flourish." (Booklist)
"Doyle's range of accents is perfect for the multiple characters of this epic....On paper Eragon is a sprawling fantasy, filled with obvious nods to Tolkien and too many convenient plot devices. But on audio, it fills the ears with vivid characters, witty dialogue, and nail-biting battle scenes set in a magical world where a beautiful blue dragon and her rider are at the noble center of it all." (AudioFile)
"An impressive epic fantasy." (Publishers Weekly)
"An authentic work of great talent. The story is gripping; moves with force." (The New York Times Book Review)

Fun fantasy but ending leaves you hanging

This is a nice book to read/listen to for its adventure and fantasy. It has all the elements - potential love, fighting, mystical creatures and a coming of age. However, when coming to the end of the book, the reader/listener finds that there are many unanswered questsions, i.e. it is book one in a series (if the writer continues it) and so one is left hanging on some basic questions that have been posed since the beginning of the book. My personal feeling is that this was a great deal of time spent listening to a book that is not completed but only hints at a possible book to come. The ending is something like a teaser for a new movie...stayed tuned to what happens next. I find myself feeling a bit cheated. It is worth the read/listen as long as you know there that this is a serial story that is not concluded with this book.

Thoroughly entertaining

Though not a regular fantasy reader, I found this book very enjoyable. The narrator was a big part of the pleasure-he gave the characters clearly defined personalities and voices without being too corny about it. The plot is engaging, and the writing is quite good. Eragon, the Dragon, and the other principal characters are well-drawn and complex. I will certainly buy the next book in the series when it comes out.

Very Captivating Book

Being a fan of fantasy, I very much enjoyed this Book, it was great. It had all the details that hold your interest. i never wanted to put it down! This Book doesn't have alot of in depth surprises around the corner, however the book is not lacking for it. The Charachters are easy to identify with and the story flows well. For readers like myself who simply want to enjoy a well told story, this one is a definate jewel and i can't wait for the next installment!

I loved this book! It drew me into the lives of Eragon and Saphira. I've listened to it twice now, back to back. Gerard Doyle was the perfect one to read this book. It's impossible to put down, and keeps listeners on the edge of their seats waiting to find out what will happen next. This is definitely one of my favorite books. I intend to share it with my children, who are huge Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings fans. If you enjoy HP or LOR, you need to try it! You won't be disappointed!

Captivating and mesmerizing! My eight year old son and I look for any and every opportunity to turn on this audiobook. Gerard Doyle's narration adds so much to the story! (even the "male" Saphira voice is more convincing for a dragon than the voice used in the movie). I tried several times to read the novel and could never quite stay interested long enough to get past the first chapter. I thought on a whim that I would listen, instead. I'm so glad that Audible made this series available. My only concern is that book three will complete the adventure... Fortunately, each book is longer than the last. (I've already purchased the other two and have begun ELDEST!) Without question, Christopher Paolini has created a triumphant masterpiece...a MUST LISTEN for SCI FI/FANTASY fans!

The Dragon is a GIRL

this is a great book which is only hurt by the nararator's inablilty to create a female dragon's voice. if you think you can get through this though than you will enjoy the read. I would have given it 4 stars but the naration brought it down a notch IMO

Great Book

First, I am glad to say I havent seen Eragon being badly bashed here as in other places. I really liked the book, although the plot is pretty typical. Actually I loved it. Although things seem to be ripped from RObert Jordans wheel of time series and the master of fantasy, J.R.R. Tolkien, they are presented here with slight changes. Tee link between jordans Aes Sedai and Warders is very similar to the link between dragon and Rider, or so you think, but after a couple pages something changes that shows Paolini's own ideas. As I said there are typical fantasy plots and characters, for example Urgals(Eragon)/Trollocs(Wheel of Time)/Orcs(Lord of the Rings) and the Shade(Eragon)/Forsaken(Wheel of Time)/Nazgul(LOTR)but then again its fantasy and these seem to work out fine, perhaps even intentionally or not tongue in cheek.
However Eragon works through these admirably and is a great book none the less. Cant wait for eldest.

I was skeptical...

But I am so glad that I listened to this book! What a great story... well written, good character development, great plot and action. I love fantasy, but a lot of it tends to border on the absurd, and mostly sounds pretty dumb when read aloud, but this book was fantastic. I will definitely listen to the next story when it comes out.
