THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA IS A CULTURAL TOUCHSTONE FOR THE AGES

When I think of The Chronicles of Narnia, I am transported to my childhood bedroom at the impossibly late hour of 9:30 PM. My dad is squinting at his yellowed 1976 edition of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, dust kicking up into the air with each turn of the page. As he speaks of fauns, stone tablets, and Turkish Delight, my little brain is working on overdrive to make sense of it all.

All seven books in the series have vastly different storylines, main characters, points of view, and in the case of the audio version, a different narrator for each title. For most Narnia fans, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is the first book they experience, and it's also the best known book in the series. In later editions of the series (including this one), The Magician’s Nephew is considered to be the first book since it takes place much earlier in the canon, starring a young Professor Digory Kirke as he discovers Narnia. I started this series with Wardrobe, however. The story of siblings Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy stumbling upon a magical land and taking on the evil White Witch is nothing short of a timeless classic. With the mighty lion Aslan and the kind faun Mr. Tumnus on their side, these four children are tested and forced to mature quickly in order to rise to the challenge.

While it certainly transports the reader into a highly conceptual fantasy world, the secret sauce to this series is the stellar character writing. Put simply, each of the four children represents one major character archetype: Peter is brave and headstrong, Susan is wise and resourceful, Edmund is agreeable and easily manipulated, and Lucy is kind and loyal. As a kid, I found myself admiring Lucy’s grit and determination in difficult situations. These character outlines may be basic, but author C.S. Lewis uses them to great effect, weaving complex character dynamics while keeping it simple enough for anyone to follow along. While the four children do not appear in all seven books, these sorts of character tropes live on with each trip to this magical and faraway land.

As a storyteller, I am reading/listening to the classics and the unforgettable books of the past in an effort to absorb the storytelling of the masters.

I had read all the seven books of the Chronicles about 10 years ago but when I saw the audiobook, I knew I just had to listen.

The 33 hours plus of listening was well worth it. The book accompanied me on walks and filled every spare moment I had.

I loved how the readers performed each story bringing the ageless work to life. I laughed a lot of times, cried a few times and found myself nodding as I appreciated again how CS Lewis put so much wisdom into these books.

I am sure I will listen again. I would advice every new reader to listen through all the seven books in the order in which they appear and then digest each book separately.

I'm ashamed to admit that I listened to it all at once. Stayed up all around the clock. Such fantastic stories, wonderful at any age. I believe that Audible put it in the correct order - chronological order rather than order of publication. The narrators were all just perfect. You've got to get this one!

I read the Chronicles years ago when the Lion and the witch came to the big screen and I had to read them all...i enjoyed the stories and how each rolled off of the previous. So when I was ablento ebjoy them in audio...i loved them even more...each narrator put in their very best...

Epic storyline, whimsical characters, and foral dilemmas; what else could you want? These books are such a great read, and they only get progressively better, as if they grow with the reader. I'm an adult, and I adore these books. My son is now reading them and he loves them too.

By far, the best fiction series of all time.

Despite the fact that I would be considered too old by some for fairy tales, I continue to love and cherish them. The Narnia stories never cease to be wholesome and lovely tales that grow in importance amongst books that tell tales of sorrow that never end well. These stories were narrated well and I can only describe them as sounding warm.

The Chronicles of Narina has always been a favorite of mine and this set is great!! The narrator is different from book to book but I enjoyed them all!

Fantastic and engaging narration all the way through. Really looking forward to sharing with my kids on road trips. Literary works that are about 65 years old now and truly become classics. Knowing only some of it through the movies it was wonderful to let my imagination awaken as I listen to the entirety of the compilation narrated with captivating style. 5 stars without hesitation.
