Publisher's Summary

A mysterious force holds Krynn in thrall. A young woman, protected by her regiment of dark-armored knights, calls upon the might of an unknown god to bring victory to her army as it sweeps across the land. The souls of the dead rob the living of their magic. A dragon overlord threatens the very land the elves hold most dear.

Amidst the chaos, a band of brave and selfless heroes struggles against an immortal power that appears to thwart them at every turn. The encroaching darkness threatens to engulf all hope, all faith, all light.

The War of Souls rages on.

"Okay story, okay narrator, terrible reading"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Change the narrator - the reading of the text is terrible.

If you’ve listened to books by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman before, how does this one compare?

    Poor narration. Okay story.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The reading of the text was abysmal. Constant incorrect pronunciations and simply misread words... examples: liches should be pronounced lih-Chez, but she read it as lik-Es. Another instance the word was immortality, and the narrator read it as immorality, in spite of the context. Finally, the name Majere is pronounced mah-Zheer, but the narrator constantly reads it as ma-Jeer-ey. It's pretty bad.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

See my review for Book 1.

    Any additional comments?

I would like my money back on this series.

    "mispronouncing names and places"
Would you try another book from Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman and/or Marieve Herington?

Marieve Herington should never try to read an epic. Mispronouncing the names of the characters that I have come to love in the Dragon lance stories is an irritant worse than a sore tooth. Makes what would be as wonderful a book as the others from Weis and Hickman unbearable to listen to.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Taz

Would you be willing to try another one of Marieve Herington’s performances?

loved her reading of the fire rose but I will not waste time and money to here her read series books

"Great story killed by horrible voice casting"

I have listened to all of the main Dragonlance works on audio. I am on the last book of this series and struggling to listen to the rest of it. It amazes me that Wizards of the Coast are taking such a lax role in protecting the integrity of this license. my main gripes in this trilogy:
    1. There is absolutely no thought put on pronunciation of major characters whatsoever: It's "Tuh-key-sus", not "Ta-kis-iss". and "Muh-jare", not "Muh-jeer-ey".
    2. Elves do not sound like "The Chipmunks". Not sure if this is the result of casting a voice actor with a natural voice similar to Lisa Simpson or if the actor actually thinks that the elves here are Keebler elves.
    3. The voice actors over annunciation is maddening. especially after 3 books. Her over emphasis of "p" at the end of "sleep" is like nails on a chalk board
    4. If I hear, "The one Gaawd" one more time, I'll slit my wrists
    5. I get why they cast a female actor for this series. But Mina could have been portrayed by a male just as easily and better service paid to all the other characters in the series at the same time. Her dialogue is flat and monotone, making characters sound like robots. This actor may be great for children's stories but horrible for fantasy stories filled with humongous dragons, minataurs, powerful warriors, lumbering ogres and all manner of evil nasties.
    6. I do like the story. Its what has kept me going. I just wish Weiss and Hickman would not have leaned so heavily on usage of, "The one god" phrase. it really got old fast.

    "great book"

loved this book but found myself skipping chapters with Gilthas in it because the plot surrounding him was absolutely boring and I kept falling Asleep. don't get me wrong I tried to push through the chapters and even skipped ahead, but they were so dry or maybe I was Just too tired :-/. However the chapters with Dalamar, Palin, Tass , Garard, Medan, or Goldmoon were fantastic.

    "extremely interesting"

This story has kept me going through the first two books at a hurried pace. the writer is fantastic at storytelling and the story keeps wrapping itself deeper and deeper along itself

    "Love original writers"

Glad the original writers came back after the Dhamon Saga books. They did a good job on blending in new characters with the old favorite characters which started it all rather than forcing the new characters down your throat which is how I felt with the Dhamon Saga books.
