Publisher's Summary

A magical serial killer is on the loose, and gelatinous, otherworldly creatures are infesting the English countryside. Which is making life for the Ministry of Occultism difficult, because magic is supposed to be their best kept secret.

After centuries in the shadows, the Ministry is forced to unmask, exposing the country's magical history - and magical citizens - to a brave new world of social media, government scrutiny, and public relations.

On the trail of the killer are the Ministry's top agents: a junior operative with a photographic memory (and not much else), a couple of overgrown schoolboys with godlike powers, and a demonstrably insane magician.

But as they struggle for results, their superiors at HQ must face the greatest threat the Ministry has ever known: the forces of political correctness....

Differently Morphous is the latest and greatest tale to emerge from the mind of writer (and narrator) Yahtzee Croshaw.

A Friendly Warning

Do NOT listen to this audiobook while driving or at least don't listen to it while driving at high speeds, because at various points of the story are moments that are so funny that you will nearly pass out from laughter. I've had a few close calls myself and I was lucky enough to narrowly avoid losing consciousness and hitting anything or wandering off the road, but others might not be so fortunate.

P.S. in the event you do not need my warning and you do end up getting in a car accident as a result, I would kindly ask that you do not sue Mr. Croshaw. He does good work.

No spoilers here. Just listen to it, and then join me in badgering Yahtzee for more.

Laugh out loud funny!

Every time I listen to one of Yahtzee's books I prepare to be embarrassed in public. I can't count how many times a snort, giggle, or outright guffaw has slipped out in public because one of his books is on in my headphones. The plots are clever, the dialogue is hilarious, and Croshaw narrates them perfectly.

Lovecraft and magic collide with bureaucracy

Another hilarious book by Yahtzee! Every time I thought I knew were the story was going, it went in a new direction. Yet, it all comes together nicely in the end. Well worth the credit.

Cynical Harry Potter meets Dirk Gently

What other book might you compare Differently Morphous to and why?

What starts off as a cynical/burocratic take on a magical universe like Harry Potter turns on it's heel to be more a kin to Dirk Gently.
I lovely mystery being to be investigated...
I deep world of magic and monsters...
All told through a quiet comedic performance that would sit comfortably next to Monty Python.

What about Yahtzee Croshaw’s performance did you like?

The vocal performance was top notch, every character has a unique voice and their own life inside the authors head. It's the kind of story that can't be on just as background noise.

Another great addition

Ive been a fan of yahtzees for a few years his books especially have this odd turn of phrase that gives his work a humorous edge even in tense scenes. It’s light, funny and pretty interesting and I recommend this and his other work.

Half Supernatural thriller, half Yes Minister

Quite possibly my favourite novel from Yahtzee yet, and very animately performed. Listeners familiar with his games will find some nice references in here but knowing them isn’t essential. I will say that if your curious about a certain event mentioned in the novel then you should play “The consuming shadow” to get some back ground on the world the book takes place in.

Without getting into too much detail the Ending was a bit mysterious, which normally would be fine except i’m aware of the author’s tendency to not make sequels, so if this is going to be another stand alone story there will be a few questions left un-answered but it by no means spoils an excellent story, well worth your time and money!

Differently amusing

A unique take of the supernatural genre, this is witty, insightful and very funny as well. A clever satire of political correctness but done in a thoughtful way. Some of the scenes in this book are comic gold, I have to say. I also enjoyed the fact that it was not just funny but had alongside it a compeling plot with genuinely surprising plot twists, which is a bonus for these types of novels in the genre which sometimes relay too much on humour and not enough on a riveting plot.
The audio version has extra delights, with a brillant, amusing performance with added sound effects that I think add to the enjoyment of the experience.

A carefully crafted conflux

It is astonishing to me how a book can be so well crafted, every tiny irreverent idea expands and forms itself over time. Nothing is wasted, even unanswered question that are clearly meant as sequel bait, still create intrigue and depth. There was a scene in an estate where I thought the book had met it's natural, climactic end point - only for another three hours to pass and something far greater and impactful leapt out of the woodwork.

This book is for people interested in speech, both as a concept, right and force. Those who strive for humour, not at the expense of character but to the betterment of it. It would appeal to dreamers and heavy thinkers who embrace a hypothetical reality within their minds and challenge it.

Read on if you dare you empty headed rattlebrain. Step forth into the intriguing abyss within the body, mind and soul that will be accompanied by the infinite pleasures of this book. These are the musings of...Diablory!!!

dirk gently meets x-files

building on the interstellar bum pirates universe with little references to his other 3 books. I love yahtzee's writing style and has only gotten more polished with every book. can't wait for the next one.

Second best Croshaw book

This is ALMOST as good as Mogworld, in my opinion the best of his novels. Incredibly funny, interesting, and mysterious. I await the sequel.

Good fun, intelligent and sarcastic.

My favourite Croshaw book so far. Some slightly more 'sympathetic' characters (to use the popular word from the book) than in Will Save The Galaxy For Food. Sarcastic humour. Very well written and well produced as an audio book. I like my stories to have some heart to them and this was borderline but finally just enough.

Hilariously Believable Story. A+ Narration.

The narration in 'Differently Morphous' is a masterclass of bringing characters to life. Yahtzee's brilliant delivery easily doubles the value of this already great story. And usually any extra audio effects can be jarring and ruin the narration, but this novel pulls it off just right and I'm glad they went to the effort of including them.

If the premise of a modern day where magic is exposed to the world seems boring. Then consider that it's a peculiar version of magic that only Yahtzee could dream up and a story driven by hilariously real characters, that again only Yahtzee could write. Juxtaposing the absurdity of magic and sci-fi with a realistic modern day - complete with social media, political correctness, and trivial bureaucracy - sucks you in pretty quickly with a stupid grin on your face.

If you're unfamiliar with the author's style, think Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, and a kind of humour that can make the most bizarre metaphor feel like the most apt description imaginable.

Loved it

I was almost surprised how much I loved this book. The story was fun and engaging, told with a dry wit, and the author himself gave a great performance, fleshing out his characters with unique voices and mannerisms. I will definitely be checking out his other titles.

Creamy filling, light, flaky and crispy shell.

Story started off a little peculiarly with a feeling of "well this is a little familiar".

This quickly worked itself into a masterfully constructed premise with a uniquely engaging protagonist who in turn had a rather endearing plight and was easy to engage with emotionally and through putting yourself in their shoes could come to the same conclusions they did at roughly the same time she did and often before which is always rather cathartic. Such is partially to the credit of rather enjoyable voice acting/narrating, for it is equally the former to the latter.

Looking forwards to indulging in some of Yahtzee Croshaws earlier works as a result if only to regain the same sense of wonder and intrigue in the dynamics of the world I am to be thrust in to.

In conclusion worth every dollar and minute for anyone that enjoys being lost in thought before, during and after every inspired moment to listen.
Easily worth 4.9/5 stars.
