5.0 out of 5 stars Croshaw's best work yet

I read the ebook version of this before I bought the audiobook. Since then, I've listened to the audiobook the full way through at least twice. That's how hilarious and well written the book is. I also love Croshaw's narration and his ability for voices is amazing. I'm very glad to have listened to the audio because otherwise I never would've known how to pronounce a lot of the character names.

This is a very well written story with interesting characters. Each person has their own take on the "political correctness storm" that comes in when the Fluidics enter our dimension seeking asylum. From the "social justice warriors" to the "Shoggoths are dangerous" the entire spectrum is well represented. And as much flack as Dr. Pavani gets for thinking that people possessed by the Ancients should be referred to as "Dual Consciousness" I give her full credit for putting her all into what she does. She never backs down and even confronts a lot of fears that those around her do not. At the same time, I love the character of Mike Badger, a former freelance bounty hunter for the Ministry who regularly killed Fluidics. He honestly goes with the flow pretty well and, when he learns that Shoggoths are sentient and protected creatures, he finds other things to do to earn money. You get quite a range here and I love how these characters play off of each other. A lot of them are, essentially, good people who just want to do their best. Some just play better by the rules while others break/create the rules.

The Fluidics/Shoggoths are absolutely adorable. Croshaw plays the reaction to them just right. Because they are so utterly inhuman and talk with a cute lisp ("We would wike to wequest asywum") humanity utterly adores them and goes out of their way to chastise any who would endanger them. Meanwhile, the possessed humans get a lot less sympathy because they are so very human in appearance. The "YouTube video comments" sections of the book are so spot on. From the public feeling that Dual-Consciousness are spoiled kids to people who "identify as Fluidic-kin". You get a lot of almost too real reactions.

The murder mystery itself is a delight! It's another case of Croshaw leaving all the clues there for you to see but you (or at least I) don't notice them or put them together quite right until the reveal. There were no gaps or leaps in the conclusion. There were no "what did I miss?" moments. It's all right there but Croshaw's story is so engaging, you don't notice the little things so easily. So when the killer is revealed, you are surprised in a good way and never feel cheated.

I absolutely loved this book. I've read/listened to it many times now and it still makes me laugh.

The first chapter of this book starts off feeling like a Harry Potter spoof, but very quickly it changes and you realize that this universe bears no resemblance to Harry Potter. This is a world where magic is real, but having magic is almost as tedious and inane as being mundane. In addition, being magical can be very dangerous. The story is a fantasy-mystery and while I did make some successful predictions about the direction of the story, I did not predict every revelation and even those I saw coming were intensely satisfying and humorous. Very entertaining. I also recommend you check out Yatzee Croshaw's other books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Storytelling, Good Worldbuilding, Great Humor.

When I first started reading Yahtzees Croshaws books I was most entertained by the wit and humor that is displayed by both the books and zero punctuation. This book however adds another layer of enjoyment to the experience with a rather well thought out world and a most entertaining mystery story. The story itself reminds me (in that it combines good humor, good storytelling and good worldbuilding) most of the works of my favorite author, the late sir Terry Pratchett. If that was the intention then Mr Croshaw, at least in my opinion, has succeeded. If it was not then I would still call it a success simply because the late Mr Pratchett was a master in this brand of storytelling.

Overall I highly recommend this book, especially if like me you love the works of Sir Terry Pratchett. I eagerly await the next installment of this series.

What a wonderful humor Mr. Yahtzee brings out in his work, this book I've not even gotten half way through and I'm absolutely taking breaks to calm myself. This is just such good fun. The writing is a brilliant bit of humor and and odd homage to a world of fiction that I find thrilling. From Harry Potter, to the eldritch horror of Cthulhu myths. I just absolutely find these links in the story so fun. Loving it. I want more. Its so fun. I'm absolutely smiling as I write this review and I'm gonna pick the book right on back up and get back into it. I just had to share how pleased I am with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Satirical and Stimulating. An excellent story that will keep you guessing.

It is the rare book that has me asking questions, confused and blindsided by twists through to the climax of the book. Master Croshaw seems to be becoming an expert on this. This was an excellent read, with Yahtzee's usual, excellent satire comprising about half the book, with the other half being an excellent... I guess I'll call it a detective novel... a story about a hunt for a killer, rife with plot twists and masterfully placed red herrings. I give this book two thumbs and one tentacle up.

Mr. C. Wrote a funny and interesting story. I would have used his first name but every time I typed it the amazon kindle would substitute the word "hanged" which is not as funny as the story. I hope Mr. C. has the time to reuse these characters again. It was like a continuation for Dirk Gently and the Tv show BBC cancelled. Keep on writing Y. C. and I will keep on looking forward to your books, (tv or movies I hope)

This is by far Yahtzee Croshaw's best book yet. The world building is perfect, the characters are engaging, and the writing is as funny as ever. The plot is incredibly intriguing and had me guessing right till the end. The closest thing I can give to criticism is that I feel there is so much left unexplored. That's not a bad thing. It just means I want a book two. Badly. So if you like modern magical mystery and a good sense of humor, read this book.

TL:DR, if you like ZP and sci-fi youโ€™ll enjoy this.

If youโ€™re familiar with Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation and other Escapist blogs, youโ€™ll also be familiar with his humour and wit. This book is a great example of both.
Unlike ZP, this can be enjoyed at a much more leisurely pace which I highly recommend. He finds a way to make points and underscore the narrative with things that make you giggle then go โ€˜huhโ€™ in thought. Well it managed that for me at least!

As a big zero punctuation fan I have dutifully read each of yahtzee's books and broadly enjoyed them all. But up till now I have caveated any recommendation with 'if you know ZP and like his humour give it it go'.

This is the first book I have recommended without that warning as it really holds up as detective thriller on it's own two feet. With the yahtzee influences and style being more of a nod than an extension.

Galaxy for food was good but not my preferred genre, this absolutely is and is great

This is an unusual story, but is quite engaging and is definitely memorable. It's slow in places, but enjoyable. The ending didn't really work for me, which took the shine off the reading experience as a whole.
