Publisher's Summary

Fifty years ago, Mira, humanity's last hope to find new resources, exited the solar system bound for Proxima Centauri B. Seven years into her mission, all transmissions ceased without warning. Mira and her crew were presumed lost. Humanity, unified during her construction, splintered into insurgency and rebellion.

Now, an outpost orbiting Pluto has detected a distress call from an unpowered object entering Sol space: Mira has returned. When all attempts at communications fail, a search and rescue vessel is dispatched from Trident Station to intercept, investigate, and tow the beleaguered Mira to Neptune.

As the marines prepare for the journey, uncertainty and conspiracy fomented by Trident Station's governing AIs, begin to take their toll. Upon reaching Mira, they discover they've been sent on a mission that will almost certainly end in catastrophe.

The Derelict saga is a suspenseful mashup of hard military sci-fi, space opera, and mystery.

Some mysteries shouldn't be solved.

    "Aliens meets Event Horizon"

I'll start with the negative. If you don't like cliffhangers and absolutely must know what happens, this may not be the book for you(Or at least until the entire saga is available of course).

I found that the story read and generated the same atmosphere and feeling as Event Horizon. That is to say it is a Sci-Fi romp that gives enough interesting science and theory to established a believable world on the surface, with cool technology and history. Don't dig too deep(in science) or you'll encounter the horror/fantasy underbelly(which is not a bad thing in my opinion). This IS NOT hard Sci-Fi, don't unfairly rate it for not being something it isn't aiming for.

Characterization is superb. He accomplished what few do and gives you a world with character. Sure it's cold and unforgiving, even plotting against you, but you feel the danger waiting in the dark.

In short, don't come here for a WH40K space marine world. Instead explore the darkness of space in a cruel world to find a dead ship.

I liked it. Interesting universe and vision of the future. I found that the book went by rather fast.

    "Tension Builds Steadily... Mira Approaches"

STORY: I was impressed with Paul E. Cooley's venture into deep space with this first book in the Derelict series. A massive exo-solar exploration ship, missing for forty-three years, returns as an out of control derelict. The Sol Federation Marines of S&R Black are thrown into the breach to recover everything they can with very little preparation. A handful of marines to stop the largest ship ever built, complacent from constant training and boredom at Neptune station, they must quickly gel as a team to confront the unknown.

Arriving at the derelict, the recovery will not be as simple as their orders implied. Artificial Intelligence systems are used in station and shipboard to "assist" with the recovery. Or?

NARRATION: Mr. Cooley narrates his own book as comfortably as if I were reading it myself. He knows how expressive he wants each character to be. His voice range provides a distinction between each character that is pleasing to the ear.

Will be looking out for book 2!

"Not what you think it is...."

This book is great if you love a long build up with a small amount of action. There are a couple of things you need to know before you purchase this book. First off if you have military experience and don't like inaccurate portrayals of it; This book will get on your nerves. This guy has done no research on how the military works. He destroys entire groups of characters by adding in odd sex scenes that just seem awfully placed. Plus, if you are or have been in the military you know that sex between two people in the same command structure is bad for moral and unit cohesion. Not to mention that it is extremely illegal. This book spends a full 7 hours to build up the story, then uses the remaining 1 hour and 46 minutes to disappoint you. The only reason i can come up with for the other two reviewers to like this book is because they are close friends to the author. I would rate this book a 0.5/10 would not even read this author again. This is my first book review.... I hated it that much...

this part of the story is slow and a little boring. I love his books so I am sure the second part will be more interesting.

    "Fun book!"

The right level of character development, space Marines and geek for a great story! And of course a cliffhanger on the way to the next book.

    "Missing a resolution"

While the story was well written the overall planning ad plotting left much to be desired. I realize that this is the first novel in the series However, in writing a series the author should incapsulate all the elements of the story segment. Each book should be able to stand on its own. While I greatly enjoyed the book I did not think there was an adequate ending.

"Paul creates a wonderful cast with his performance"
If you could sum up Derelict: Marines in three words, what would they be?

    Suspensful, Creepy, and Intriguing.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Corporal Kalimura. She developed over the course of the novel.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The alien ambush. Paul created original aliens, and he hasn't given us many details yet.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, one of the flashback scenes. It was very personal; sorry I cannot share it.

    Any additional comments?

The only bad thing about Derelict is the ending. You will want Tomb immediately.

    "pitiful"
Would you try another book from Paul E. Cooley and/or Paul E. Cooley?

I kept waiting for the action to start it never did. The narrator really got on my nerves which made listening to it almost impossible I usually like Cooly books but if the series is like this one I think I will pass.

Has Derelict: Marines turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No

What didn’t you like about Paul E. Cooley’s performance?

    The narrator ruined the book

What character would you cut from Derelict: Marines?

Not sure I hated the narration so much I couldn;t stomach listening to it.

    Any additional comments?

Too bad I can't return it. Audible won't let me. I will avoid narration from this narrator from now on.

"Gave up less than half way through"

This book wasn't awful, but for me, it spent way too much time on boring details of the journey preparations. If I had been reading a physical book, I would probably have thumbed ahead a few chapters, or skimmed through the first part quickly.

Similarly, the reader (who is also the author) wasn't awful, but I thought he went way over the top with some of the voices, especially that of Gunny, who is unfortunately one of the major characters. I also didn't care for the gimmicky echo effect that was used to convey when someone was thinking rather than speaking.

If I had been on a long road trip with this book, I probably would have gone ahead and listened to all of it. But since I listen an hour at a time before bed, it was too easy to just turn it off and find something I found more entertaining.

"Good solid sci-fi. Well read and well written."

Writes sci-fi like a man born to the task. I enjoyed his first two novels immensely....I enjoyed this even more. Good story, good characters, great sense of unnameable horror. The second novel in this series? I look forward to it with relish. Kudos.

Could not relate to any of the characters in this book and found the narration not great either. Always a telling point if you can’t finish a book.
