Publisher's Summary

Elaine is an orphan girl who has grown up in a world where magical ability brings power. Her limited talent was enough to ensure a magical training, but she's very inexperienced and was lucky to get a position working in the Great Library. Now, the Grand Sorcerer - the most powerful magician of them all - is dying, although initially that makes little difference to Elaine; she certainly doesn't have the power to compete for higher status in the Golden City. But all that changes when she triggers a magical trap and ends up with all the knowledge from the Great Library stuffed inside her head. The knowledge locked away in the Great Library was meant to remain permanently sealed and letting it out could mean a repeat of the catastrophic Necromantic Wars of 500 years earlier. Elaine is forced to struggle with the terrors and temptations represented by her newfound knowledge, all the while trying to stay out of sight of those she fears.

But a darkly powerful figure has been drawing up a plan to take the power of the Grand Sorcerer for himself; and Elaine, unknowingly, is vital to his scheme. Unless she can unlock the mysteries behind her new knowledge, there is no hope for those she loves, the Golden City, or her entire world.

"a decent stand-alone story, no fairy tale ending"

Rated R for mild, pervasive, sex talk and scenes.

THIS is a totally different Nuttall tale. Everything seemed like a different author, which is great when the author changes genre directions. However, this could be Emily's world (Schooled in Magic) centuries after Emily. Elaine is another mildly magic girl who receives an infusion of power beyond her innate abilities, but she is more grounded than Emily and displays none of Emily's annoying waffling over love interests or what she wants to be.

The bookworm concept is wonderful! Elaine's acceptance of her situation, and then her willingness to sacrifice herself to save the world if necessary are good character development. The outcome of the story is believable and satisfying and not your typical fairy tale. This book stands alone or could have sequels. Not for children despite the genre.

The narration is very not-American, pleasant and easy to listen to.

"Finally! An Adult Version of the 'Schooled In Magic' Series!"

Finally! A 'Non-Young Adult' series set in the future of the 'Schooled In Magic' universe! It's actually a relief to NOT have to suffer through the 'Young girl, should I? Dare I? NO! I can't' mentality.

LOVE Nuttall's Books, however, it was a surprisingly refreshing change to listen to a story from the magical universe, via the perspective of an early 20's Female Character.

    "Narrator reads very slowly"

I really enjoyed the book once I moved the reading speed up to 1.15 so it sounded normal. the narrator reads very slowly, slowly enough to frustrate me. once I speed it up, I really enjoyed the listen, the story and the narrator. She separates the characters well. Great book!

    "Not continuing with this series"

I have had this book for over 6 months and now that #2 - #4 are out I forced myself to go back to it and TRY to get through the story to see if I wanted to continue with the series......The answer I finally came to is NO, IT'S NOT WORTH MORE CREDITS!

I tried for 2 days while cleaning house to get through the whole story and still found myself skipping around and even falling asleep when I took a break from cleaning. The sad thing is I ADORE the author's Schooled in Magic series and pray for Audible to hurry up with producing the next books. But I just can't seem to care about the characters here and all I foresee in the next books is more of the same.

The narration is great but the characters don't interest me and I foresee all the series going from one catastrophe to the next with no character development nor even any real variations to the catastrophe. Plug in new.bad guys and have the team race to save the world against the same evil four times? With good guys I could care less about or barely even know isn't worth another $36 in credits.

Mr. Nutall, this and your new Zero series seriously need work on developing characters your readers know enough about to care what happens to them in the next book. I know you can write better than this but the faster churning of your books seems to have affected the quality of your writing.

    "Non fairytale, but satisfying conclusion."

It was slow to start, but worth reading to the end. Climactic, but not neat.

"I wanted to love this book"
What did you like best about Bookworm? What did you like least?

I loved the idea, i loved the voice actor. But half way through the book i had to make myself stay. the last 30 minutes were painful. The story just... dropped.
over use of "Existence" and having Elaine find strength she didn't know she had became cringe worthy.
The sexual experience seemed forced and Elaine's wondering about love afterwards was awkward. I believed her relationship to her tormentor more then the relation ship to Bee.

The voice actor was very good, but i will not be returning to this author.

Has Bookworm turned you off from other books in this genre?

i loved the idea, the idea was great and i would like to read another book LIKE this, but not by this author.

Was Bookworm worth the listening time?

    no

    "Very Slow Story"
    What disappointed you about Bookworm?

I could not make it through the Book, the plot was so boring, being she got the whole magic library in her head still no real action, more of a teen coming of age & losing her virginity etc...

What could Christopher Nuttall have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Put some real action or even some fast paced story line
