Publisher's Summary

Sailing, Yachts and Yarns is a selection of Tom Cunliffe’s funniest, wisest and most thought-provoking writing from the pages of Yachting Monthly. Tom’s love of language and sense of humour shine through as he recalls the wealth of sinners and saints he has met on docksides from Southampton to South America, Greenwich to Greenland and Newtown to New York. He has a gift for capturing the magic of sail and finding pearls of practical wisdom in the most unlikely nautical adventures. Sailing, Yachts and Yarns is a lively miscellany of a wit, wisdom and wonder.

It will make you laugh and make you think – and make you want to cast off to enjoy the delights of life afloat.

A joy to listen

How this hasn’t been marked five stars by anyone who listened to mate than 2 sentences, sailor or not is beyond me.

Charming and Entertaining

Loved every story! Tom Cunliffe does a perfect job of narrating his own written word.

He's a bit of a crumudgeon and it shows

While I love sailing and tales of the sea, the author's sour view and poor narration left me wanting to chuck this one into the sea. Not my favorite.

A little irrelevant.

This is a story put on by a rather opinionated english reporter. Some of his information is good, but most of it was disappointing. Things like - you don't need a life-jacket while in the water, while talking about how much difficulty most skippers have coming back for a man-overboard.

Nice turn of phrase

Very interesting information delivered with typically dry English humour. Fires up the adventuring spirit. Sounds like his wife is quite the capable adventurer in her own right.

laugh out loud observations

easy to listen to, witty, dry but usually on the mark commentary on a wide variety of topics. Good food for thought, honestly delivered.

Perfect for a novice like me.

I could listen to this three times and learn more each time. Tom Cunliffe has a lovely down to earth voice, perfect intonation.

Tom is not a narrator

Good stories but would be better with someone else telling the stories other than the author

Entertaining, salty but a little "ranty"

An entertaining series of essays full of sensible advice and evocative memories of the sea but a little "ranty" about the malaise of health and safety

Blooming Good Tales

Listening to this filled me with anticipation of the arrival of spring and the fact that come Easter me and my yacht will return to the sea.
In fact many of the tales talk about my own sailing back yard, but I cant claim to have ever meet the author in the Jolly Sailor but if I did I buy him a beer or two and say thanks for the audio book loved the anecdotes and I am sure we are kindred spirits because I agree with everything in this book. Cheers.

Bliss

This book is a sailing gem. I couldn't stop listening, and I was swept from outright laughs to just letting the nautical language and wealth of anecdotes wash over me. Beautifully delivered by Tom Cunliffe, thank you.
