Publisher's summary

When a mystery writer cries bloody murder, everyone blames her overactive imagination.

Thriller scribe Sophie Katz is as hard-boiled as a woman who drinks Grande Caramel Brownie Frappuccionos can be; maybe it's from a lifetime of fielding dumb comments about her half-black, half-Jewish ethnicity. ("My sister's married to a Polynesian! I just love your culture!") So Sophie knows it's not paranoia, or post-divorce, living-alone-again jitters, when she becomes convinced that a crazed reader is sneaking into her apartment to reenact scenes from her books. The police, however, can't tell a good plot from an unmarked grave.

When a filmmaker friend is brutally murdered in the manner of a death scene in one of his movies, Sophie becomes convinced that a copycat killer is on the loose...and that she's the next target. If she doesn't solve the mystery, her own best seller will spell out her doom. Cursing her grisly ending (why, oh, why did she have to pick the axe?), Sophie engages in some real-life gumshoe tactics.

The man who swoops in to save her in dark alleys at night is mysterious new love interest Anatoly Darinsky. Of course, if this were fiction, Anatoly would be her prime suspect.

Solve another case with Sophie.

ok..i got to say...

When I heard the sample I thought this book was like the Lisa Lutz books..(funny, interesting from start to finish) The Spellman Files, Curse of the Spellmans ...etc..but it was boring at least in the beginning. I only kept listening because I paid for it. At some point in the book it really got good. The only problem big problem is the narrator trying to do the different accents- that was pretty bad
(- one star). You really wouldnt know what race she was trying to protray without the description...also...unfortunately I guessed the end pretty fasted I thought it was typical and not too creative (- one star). but I think I might try another. Sophie with the two friends were the funniest in the book!!

Just ok.

The book started out interesting and funny but it quickly became annoying and predictable. I had a hard time getting to the end. There was very little romance which I found disappointing as it was part of the romance package. The narrator seemed to perform the women's voices lower than the men's and it became confusing who was talking.

Ok

I really liked this book and would recommend it. I wish this book was a movie or TV show. I would have given it 5 stars if the author hadn't used God's name in vain. You don't have to use "Gd" inorder to have a great book. It had a great storyline and sexual references storylines. Can't wait to hear another book in this series. The killings were crazy, but I knew it was the crazy artist. I can't wait to see if I can figure out the next mystery in the other books. The narrator was good.

Fun and Funny Romp with Great Characters

I really enjoyed this book. The protagonist is flawed, funny, smart and very 'real'. The book is written in the first person, allowing you to see how she really ticks. Her sidekicks are memorable, fun in their own right and really keep the dialogue moving forward.

It's a private eye crime-solving comedy that will entertain you and make you want more. There's a nice dearth of sex and romance, leaving room to develop the story and the characters in it. And it has great politics without being political. Yay for Sophie Katz!

Pretty Light "Read"

I love her regular voice but all the main character's friends seem to have a deep weird voice, particularlly for women. I liked the book, it was a light "read" and want to listen to more but I'm not sure I can get past the low monotone voice the narrator uses for everyone else in the story. It's kind of weird.

Fun book!

This book is a fast listen, I couldn't stop! Funny dialog combined with well developed characters brought it to life, quickly. It is a series, so you are left with a little cliffhanger thing, and I know how people hate those cliffhangers!

It is murder, mayhem and a desire for sex.... no bodice-ripping here. Her quirky family provides great background for this story, Jewish mother, demanding sister, Mr. Kat, her loyal feline, gay hairdresser friend - it kind of hits all the stereotypes hilariously. Oh, did I mention murder? Yes, that too.

Narration was spot on. Guys, women, Jewish mom, all done well.

Liked it, want more!

ehh..ok

Well, the narrator mixes up her accents, they are not bad, just the Spanish accent suddenly turns Russian-ish. It seems the story was intended to be funnier than the narrator comes across. This one might be better to read.

Good Start with Promise for More to Come

This is a book I selected based on the recommendation of Gabra Zackman in an audible e-mail where narrators remembered some of their most fun reads. This is a series of romance mysteries and I am intrigued to read more. Ms. Zackman does a great job of brinking the characters to life, and the characters themselves are an eclectic mix of San Francisco sylized characters. It was a fun romp, and I hope to learn a little bit more about Sophie and Anatoly. This book would be a great listen for a long-drive when you could sit down and listen straight through, or if you just want to pass some time on a rainy day.
