Publisher's Summary

She's a mortal cursed with dark power....

After a tragic accident scarred her body and destroyed her dreams, Leila never imagined that the worst was still to come: a terrifying ability to channel electricity and to see a person's darkest secrets through a single touch. Leila is doomed to a life of solitude ... until creatures of the night kidnap her, forcing her to reach out with a telepathic distress call to the world's most infamous vampire.

He's the Prince of Night....

Vlad Tepesh inspired the greatest vampire legend of all - but whatever you do, don't call him Dracula. Vlad's ability to control fire makes him one of the most feared vampires in existence, but his enemies have found a new weapon against him: a beautiful mortal with powers to match his own. When Vlad and Leila meet, passion ignites, threatening to consume them. It will take everything they have to stop an enemy intent on bringing them down in flames.

"An action packed, fast paced story."

Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost left me singed while listening to this. It was an action packed, fast paced story, full of paranormal delights and Vampire fun.

The entire story is told through Leila’s point of view. I was kind of missing the alternating POV, especially getting to see inside of Vlad’s mind and his thought processes.

    “Different didn’t mean sub-human.”

I really liked Leila. She was a no nonsense, non-whiney character, sort-of kick ass and has powers. She kind of had that super hero backstory especially with how she came about her powers. It’s electrifyingly exciting. And that is totally a pun intended sentence. Her electrical powers when someone touches her hand brings a sort of suspense to the storyline. How the heck is she going to overcome that? Especially in a romantic relationship? Because we all know that it’s coming. She’s also telepathic, which makes her a very valuable asset to both the bad and good vamps.

Vlad, i.e. the historic and somewhat cliched Dracula aka Vlad the Impaler was a slight disappoint for me. He was just a little too standoffish, cold, and blank. Maybe it was because we couldn’t see inside his head, but in truth I wasn’t fan-girling over him. I couldn’t get anything romantic from this storyline, no real emotions on Vlad’s end. The sexy times were hot, but were just that, sex.

I actually fell for Maximus, a secondary character that I kind of wished Leila ended up with. But oh, well.

Overall, the narrator Tavia Gilbert, was good. I liked her voice for Leila. At times her voices for the bad vamps kind of sounded like her voice for Vlad, which in effect sounded like Red from Orange is the New Black. Sorry for putting that image in your head, but that’s what I thought. Even with that, I got over it and found myself enjoying the narration.

This does end in a sort of cliffhanger. A new problem sort of thing happens at the end, so it’s best to read these from the beginning.

    "This book just disturbed me."

I'm not sure I can adequately describe why this book was so disturbing.

Vlad is centuries old and takes advantage of a young woman's desperation to find someone she can touch long enough to sleep with. That's the basis of their relationship. That's it. It's gross.

I guess I'm just weird, but I don't find manipulation sexy, and just pity the naivety of the victim of that manipulation.

I tweeted at one point that this book feels like the romance equivalent of the bargain white women struck in voting for Trump. Accept the brutality of a natural enemy with the questionable promise of it not being directed toward you, personally. Accept the cost of chauvinism, and the understanding you're not viewed as equally human in the eyes of the enemy you've taken to bed. All for the protection that redirecting that brutality away from you awards you. And it's only ever temporary. It's a fool's bargain.

    This book is disturbing.

    "The worst...just awful"

I am so sorry I wasted 8+ hours of my life on this drivel. If you are looking for an interesting, exciting, hot vampire tale, skip it. Sorry, Ms Frost, but this story is just dumb; there is no heat and the romance is trite and...yuck! You will roll your eyes so many times...they'll get stuck. Bypass this one and keep looking.

    "way too much torture"

Much more violence/torture than romance in this book. If that's what you're looking for, you won't be disappointed.

Biggest irritant: Vlad being angry because he couldn't "impale" (yes, literally) one of his closest friends for a whole week because Leila was hurt in an attack, and only because the friend failed to get her out unharmed. What the heck?! Duh! No one with anything above a 10 point IQ would stay loyal to someone who treats them so badly. There are better ways for an author to demonstrate strength in a protagonist.

    And Leila is really whinny.

Would you consider the audio edition of Once Burned to be better than the print version?

I would as the performance is excellent and enhances the story and strengthens the characters.

    Any additional comments?

As I have read the Huntress series and Vlad was a strong support character in those books - this book develops his story line. The book is free standing and is not affected if you have not read the Huntress series. LOVED this book will read it again without a doubt.

"Another great book form Jeanine Frost"
What made the experience of listening to Once Burned the most enjoyable?

I have been a fan of Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress World books for years and Once Burned did not disappoint.
It is only recently that I have begun to listen to audiobooks, as I do not have the time to read books as much as I used to or want to.
Not only does the story draw you into the world Jeaniene has created, but Tavia Gilbert does an excellent job as a narrator with her natural flow, pleasant voice, her ability to express specific feelings in a single sentence as well as using different voices and accents for each character. There are a few accents/voices I think could use a little improving, but overall I love Tavia Gilbert's work.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Definitely, I have read the book in one sitting and have listened to the audiobook quite a few times so far.

    "Nice reading"

This is a nice piece of reading if you like vampires and romance mixed together. :) So many of us likes bad boys with pure golden hearts only for us. And we can easily placed ourselves in main character’s skin. I couldn’t give it full marks only because I like Vlad Dracula in a different version. If the main vampire had a different name it would be totally 5 stars. But all together the story is good. We have love and drama and damsel in distress who actually can take care for herself. And we have a juicy moments too. And the vampires don’t sparkle :) I don’t have experience in romance books but I think this one will satisfy my needs more than love stories placed in non supernatural worlds.

    "awesome"

I was actually introduced to this author through this knight Prince series with Vlad and Leyla. I loved it so much I went off to find out what else she'd written, realised these books sit within the whole other story arc of the knight huntress world with cat and bones and promptly started working my way through that series.

firstly if you too didn't realise these books are stories within a larger story I highly recommend reading the whole series in order. I've seriously enjoyed it.

secondly this is my second read/listen to Vlad and layla's story, because I wanted to listen again knowing the fuller context of the wider story arc, along with all the other characters, and I'm really glad I did. you by no means have to, I loved these books the first time before I realised the bigger story existed, but I'm really glad I have read them again within the bigger story arc because there are little references to things that have happened previously that I now understand this time round, because ' I was there' in a previous book, which, for me, just makes the stories a little richer, but as I said by no means necessary.

the vlad and Leyla story arc within the night huntress world is really great and this book doesn't let that good rep down, even on my second read/listen I enjoyed it immensely. there's a real wicked sense of humour that runs through the V & L storyline that I love, but aside from that this story has yet another really intersting twist on what can happen within the supernatural world that Jeaniene Frost is so good at. loved it.

    "An enjoyable read... Or listen!"
What made the experience of listening to Once Burned the most enjoyable?

I enjoyed the take on the age old Vlad the Impaler legend.

Did Tavia Gilbert do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

I think it's important to note that the male main character in this book has a Romanian accent. Tavia Gilbert managed to do an okay job with this, better than most attempts at accents in audiobooks, and as the story goes on you get used to it a bit more. However, if I'm honest, I could only *just* stand it. If the story hadn't been as compelling, I would not have been able to listen to it. There are a couple of other accents attempted which were terrible. In particular, what was supposed to be an English accent was unbearable. As an English woman, it was cringeworthy to hear our accent butchered. Thankfully that particular character is only in it for a short scene. Although be aware that the spin-off of this series features the same character as it's main protagonist.
I would like the sample to have included a section with Tavia speaking with the "Romanian" accent. It is an important factor to many listeners.

    Any additional comments?

The actual story is great. It's a nice, laid back, easy listen and I throughly enjoyed the storyline. I perfect balance of action and romance, with some great passion.
