Publisher's Summary

After trading the barracks for a fixer-upper rental, Navy SEAL Zack Nelson wants peace, not a roommate - especially not Pike, who sees things about Zack he most wants to hide. Pike's flirting puts virgin Zack on edge. And the questions Pike's arrival would spark from Zack's teammates about his own sexuality? Nope. Not going there. But Zack can't refuse.

Pike Reynolds knows there won't be a warm welcome in his new home. What can he say? He's an acquired taste. But he needs this chance to get his life together. Also, teasing the uptight SEAL will be hella fun. Still, Pike has to tread carefully; he's had his fill of tourists in the past, and he can't risk his heart on another, not even one as hot, as built - and, okay, yeah, as adorable - as Zack.

Living with Pike crumbles Zack's restraint and fuels his curiosity. He discovers how well they fit together in bed...in the shower...in the hallway...He needs Pike more than he could have imagined, yet he doesn't know how to be the man Pike deserves.

    "really very nice"

this series I really liked. I had started with the last book in the Gaymers series "Connection Error". You will need that one to know what some of the characters are. I can not wait till the next book in this series.

    "Great listen"

I loved this book for a lot of reasons, the struggle with coming out in a world that doesn't invite it was very well done. I don't want to write any spoilers but I practically bawled with sympathy at the very real struggles for these characters that you really fall in love with!!
There were a few cadence hiccups in the read which is why I only gave it four stars for performance but over all very well done!!
If you are looking for a really heartfelt story about love over coming obstacles with a healthy dose of real world problems (though their resolutions are predictably in the characters favour of coarse) give this a listen. It was very engaging and I had a hard time turning it off to go to bed.

    "not the best"

this book is my least favorite of the series, first I started off with book 2 then 3 those where great but this one was lacking in a way I can't put into words, I just wasn't invested in these characters. if you are new to this series don't read this one first.

    "Great narration and written well"

I really liked the characters but I just can't read/listen to anymore closeted male books. The writing was good, the dialog was real, and there were some very sweet moments. The love scenes were sexy and sweet.

    "Disappointment"

The narrator's was annoying. I wish he would have been able to change his voice up more between characters and the narration. Storyline was also abbot slow to start.

    "Great"

This was a great book, at least for me. I can relate to so much to both characters. I'll admit, it was a little tough to get into at the very beginning. However, I kept listening and I am glad that I did.

    "Great story and wonderful narration"
What did you love best about Off Base?

Zack's emotional journey pulled me in as did Pike's good-natured personality.

What about Tyler Stevens’s performance did you like?

Tyler Steven's did an excellent job. He clearly differentiated each character's voice so it was really easy to tell who was talking. He filled the story with emotion, depth and humor. I would definitely look for him as a narrator again. He didn't just read the book, he truly performed it.

    Any additional comments?

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. It is going in my cart right now.

"Great new series (spinoff) and great narration"

So, it’s not part of the series, but this is a “spin off” from the #gaymers series. (When Ryan was in the hospital he shared a room with Zach and the two see each other now and then throughout the story. Also, Pike was an intern with Josiah and is interested in gaming from a production standpoint.) I got a really similar vibe from this couple as the couple from Status Update. Zach is deeply in the closet and Pike is out and proud. In addition to that Zach is a virgin! Zach parents are ultra-religious and Pike’s are hippies. Not to say this is a repeat of that book, but all the lovely feels that I felt with SU I felt with this as well.

At first, I admit, I was pretty frustrated with Zach and his inability to even acknowledge his sexuality to himself and I was REALLY frustrated with Pike and thought he was deluding himself by allowing Zach to keep their relationship on the DL. But… I see that Zach really needed the time with Pike to normalize his feelings and to come to grips with it himself. However, Pike had been down this road before and he “knew” it didn’t end well…. Luckily things worked out differently this time.

The physical times aren’t plentiful, but really touching and very hot! I absolutely loved how Pike uses the porn as a way to “teach” Zach and that he very much wears his teaching hat throughout the entire process! These guys are an adorable couple and I loved them for each other. I hated that things are left a bit uncertain, but it looks very hopeful by the end. This is listed as book one of a series and I think Apollo is going to end up an MC in one in the future – or at least I hope so!

For fans of the author, the series, military men, gay first timers, and sassy MCs this is the book for you! It’s definitely a standalone but if you like this you’ll love the #gaymers series so you might as well read them first!

    Audio

Tyler Stevens is a great narrator! I love the quality of his voice and I think he does a lot with pacing to really pull emotion from a listener. While I thought he chose well for his voicing of Pike, I really wanted Zach’s voice to be a bit deeper, or at least a bit deeper than Pike’s. I liked the voices he chose for the other secondary characters and I think this is a great way to enjoy this story. With only that small niggle, I can highly recommend this to fans of the book!

For both book and audio 4.5 of 5 stars

    "Good story and narration"
    Any additional comments?

Off Base is a spinoff of the #gaymers series, which I love and adore, and you get to revisit with some of the characters from that series here.

The story is good, and I did enjoy it, but I have to admit it made me tired with all Zach's internalized angst. I loved Pike though.

--
Zack’s eyes were big and soft. “I just know that I’m so tired of hating myself every second of every day, and when I’m around you, I don’t hate me so much. I’ve spent the last year trying to make sense of me, but when I’m around you, it feels like the answer might actually be out there.”
--

It's a good story overall, realistic with plenty of feels. I hated Zach's parents, and once you get to know his background and upbringing you really understand why he is the way he is. The plot is believable and it's an engrossing read.

I liked Tyler Stevens performance, both his character voices and timing, and I'd check out other audios of his.
