Publisher's Summary

Two hearts in the darkness...

Makenna James and Caden Grayson have been inseparable since the day they were trapped in a pitch-black elevator and found acceptance and love in the arms of a stranger. Makenna hopes that night put them on the path to forever - which can't happen until she introduces her tattooed, pierced, and scarred boyfriend to her father and three over-protective brothers.

Must fight for love in the light...

Haunted by a childhood tragedy and the loss of his family, Caden never thought he'd find the love he shares with Makenna. But the deeper he falls, the more he fears the devastation sure to come if he ever lost her, too. When meeting her family doesn't go smoothly, Caden questions whether Makenna deserves someone better, stronger, and just more...normal. Maybe they're just too different - and he's far too damaged, after all...

spoiler alert

Spoiler alert!

I would have given the book 5 stars because I enjoyed how unique the story was, but the 3rd car accident was just too much. made the book seem almost melodramatic and over the top.

Really Enjoyed

This book was great, there was proper story development and just enough romance, just enough hot sex. It was a fairly predictable storyline - inevitably the main characters don’t communicate, make stupid assumptions and that then becomes the main plot twist.
What did work really well was Laura Kaye’s respectful and reasonably accurate depiction of someone experiencing serious mental health health issues. There was lots of pain caused by the mental health problems being faced, but in this story there was still a way for them to be loved and valued rather than condemned and rejected.
Other than the predictability of the plot, this was a well written enjoyable listen.

Emotional rollercoaster, family, past pain . . .

I have to admit that I did find that this second installment did not bowl me over with excitement, but I also did not expect that the level of emotions would be so high. Makenna James and Caden Grayson find each other and get only a few months of then time before it was all put on the line because of meddling family and past hurts. This was a lot for the young couple to be going though this early in their relationship. Family did not exactly help with this issue. Makenna's had a house of males that were looking out for her but maybe one of them was looking out for someone else over his sister. I still did not find a resolution to my questions on this point. I would say that you will find an emotional roller coaster, family drama/interference, past pain, ptsd, sadness and more.

Narration was complementary to the story being told.

Worth the wait

So excited for this book! I love the lead characters. The narrator does a great job of voice change for all characters.

Great story -awful reader

I read the book first and loved it. I decided to get the Audible version so I could do a re-read. I did not enjoy listening to the reader. She was very digital sounding , almost monotone. She read the story so quickly and emotionlessly. I could not get through the first chapter as the reader completely ruined the experience of such a wonderful story.

Makenna & Caden

As an avid reader, it is often difficult to point to the book that got me hooked on a particular author. That is not the case with Laura Kaye; it was Hearts in Darkness the first book I read by her. I instantly fell in love with Makenna & Caden, then with Laura's writing style.

Now Laura has granted my wish with an incredible second glance at their love story. Her brutal, realistic depiction of Caden's struggles made this reader love him even more - didn't think it was possible. But what brought the story to the top of my must read (and recommend - to everyone) list is Makenna's heart. Nothing could make me put this book down - including the pineapple upside down cake that almost burnt.

Now hoping Laura fulfills my need to witness the James' boys find love. Hint! Hint!

Emotional read

Book 2 in the Hearts of Darkness series, follows Caden and Makenna as they navigate their relationship, dealing with protective brothers and a particularly persistent ex boyfriend, add to this Caden's demons and we have a recipe for another interesting, addictive read. Caden suffers badly with stress in this book and he doesn't handle it well. I've got to say Makenna is a star through all his struggles. I felt so sorry for Caden, dealing with so many personal all issues. I so wanted them to get their happy ever after. A lovely story with some emotional scenes.

So many tears, so much laughter

I, like so many other fans of Caden and Makenna's story, have waited so long for this. And it was worth the wait.
I especially liked the honesty with which Caden's struggle with PTSD was presented. It is ugly and all-consuming and ruin so many lives of victims and their families.
But then there is love and forgiveness, in all its many forms.
At one point I couldn't listen any further, it was by far too painful to experience and share in the heart-wrenching pain, and even the knowledge of an HEA couldn't alleviate that whole in my chest. I cried to Caden even more than Makenna. And so will you.
THIS IS A MUST-READ but only AFTER you've read Hearts in Darkness.
Happy reading....and crying.

Loved it

Where does Love in the Light rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Good but the narrator wasn't the best

What other book might you compare Love in the Light to, and why?

There's a lot of romance books I could compare this to

What about Erin L. Jones’s performance did you like?

Not the best narrator she makes McKenna sound weak but she actually isn't its just the narrator's voice.... shame

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Some parts pulled at the old heartstrings

Any additional comments?

I love Laura Kate books not found one I haven't enjoyed yet
