Publisher's Summary

Pride & Prejudice meets alternate history.

Six years after Napoleon's invasion of England....

Fitzwilliam Darcy is a traitor. He even admits to collaborating with Napoleon's troops. And Elizabeth Bennet despises all traitors.

But she can't make sense of Darcy. He doesn't act like a traitor. He risks his own safety to save young women from the French. And how can she despise a man who loves puppies? Something about him doesn't add up - and she finds him far too attractive.

Then Darcy's carefully constructed world crumbles, and he must entrust his closest-held secret to Elizabeth. To protect that secret, Elizabeth must disappear entirely, leaving her family and Darcy behind, to plunge herself into the dizzying world of fashionable London and the dangers of the Loyalist Resistance. Nothing will ever be the same again.

Darcy is determined to find Elizabeth. Now that she knows the truth about him, there's nothing to keep them apart - nothing, that is, until the day Darcy is forced to choose between his country and the life of the woman he loves....

    Story
"Butterflies, Goosebumps, And A Lot Of Tears!"

In this Pride and Prejudice variation, Napoleon invaded England in 1805 and conquered it, imprisoning royalty and stripping nobles of their lands and titles. Now England lives under French occupation. When the story begins, Mr. Bingley has arrived at Netherfield Park with his friend Mr. Darcy, a man everyone knows is a traitor.

I would go on with a summary, but I don't want to spoil any part of the book for anyone. The revelation of the new state of affairs for the Bennet family had me on pins and needles, and you need to experience that for yourself! This was one of the most original P & P variations I've ever read. It told a completely new story, and only borrowed characters and locations from P & P. Every once in a while the author dropped in a phrase from the original novel, and it was so fun to pick them out.

As for the plot itself, it was really well done. Meticulously researched, wonderfully creative, expertly written, and full of witty dialogue. The book had so many romantic scenes between Lizzy and Darcy, but also managed to be action packed and suspenseful. Expect butterflies, goosebumps, and a lot of tears!

Narration can really make or break the listening experience, especially in a book with so many French accents. Elizabeth Klett ranks up there with Kate Reading, Rosalyn Landor, and Davina Porter for me. Her regular speaking voice is so pleasant, and her French accents a delight. She's incredibly talented, and did an outstanding job with this professional narration.

I received a copy of the audiobook at my request, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.

"Entertaining Twist to Pride & Prejudice"

This was a great alternate reality for Pride & Prejudice. The story was entertaining and very original. I enjoyed the adventure, danger, suspense, romance, and unexpected twists.

The narration was well done and brought the story to life.

This is by far the best variation I have heard from Pride & Prejudice. It is set in an alternate reality where England has been invaded and conquered by the French/Napoleon.

I'm looking forward to reading/listening more books by this talented author.

    "Interesting Twist!"

I have enjoyed Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice, and found this twist on the original premise to be very good. The story is original and yet has some very familiar details. I thought the narrator did an excellent performance with the various characters and emotions. Both the author and narrator are very talented, and I will look for more of their works. My review is not a synopsis of the book, but rather my opinion of it. This is a sweet story that is a clean listen and full of so much imagery. "Reynolds does it again..."

I didn't even bother to read what this book was about before purchasing because Abigail Reynolds has yet to publish something I haven't been able to put down. To say she has out done her self would be the understatement of the year.

The alternate history sets the backdrop for one of the most adventurous Pride and Prejudice stories I've ever had the pleasure to read/listen to.

I laughed, cried, and laughed again. The new characters were just as lovable as their original counterparts.

This story couldn't have been told better!

    Brava, Abigail!

I'm a voracious fiction reader/listener but focus mostly on Sci-fi, fantasy (urban and alternate & other world), and romance. A mixture of these is what I love to find. Sci-fi to challenge my mind, fantasy to make me grin, and romance to turn my mind off to.

The most original P&P variation that still feels like it could be Darcy and Elizabeth. So well researched.

    "Fabulous 5-Star P&P Variation"
If you could sum up Conceit & Concealment in three words, what would they be?

    Napoleon invades England

Who was your favorite character and why?

I'm always a fan of Elizabeth and Darcy, but I especially liked their new dimensions as Abigail Reynolds explored what they might be like if they suffered under French occupation. As for new characters, I enjoyed the real Princess Charlotte, who is disguised for much of the book as another well-known character.

What does Elizabeth Klett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I really enjoyed her French accents. They added a real flare to the story that I wouldn't have received from just reading the book.

    Any additional comments?

I have loved many of Abigail Reynolds books in the past, and this one is topping the charts. You can tell that Abigail Reynolds did her research, and it was fun to hear about it at the end of the book after the epilogue. Overall this has become one of my favorite variations, and I highly recommend you pick it up if you're in the mood for a new take on Jane Austen's beloved novel. You'll love this Lizzy and this Darcy as much as the first.

Who was your favorite character and why?

It's a toss up between Elizabeth and Darcy, both have to be extremely strong in the face of challenges.

    Which scene was your favorite?

When Elizabeth and Darcy are married.

    Any additional comments?

The narrator is awesome! Her performance was stellar and you can always tell which character is speaking. I loved the alternate history spin on this classic tale, it brought new depth and challenges to the characters. "Sweet read"

Abigail Reynolds has a lovely writing style, it flows smoothly and makes for a fast paced read. The cast of characters were likeable and fun. For me personally, Elizabeth and Darcy didn't remind me of JA's characters, but I really enjoyed them as new characters. The author also created an ending that tied everything up including all the minor story lines. I appreciate when an author takes the time to do this, especially as many of the minor characters are often my favourite ones. Conceit and Concealment was also a fun 'what if story'. I found it interesting to read her interpretation of what life would have been like had the French invaded Great Britain. I loved that at the end of the book she include the actual historical situation regarding Napoleon's plans for a British invasion. It had me running to the computer to do some more research:)

Narration: Elizabeth Klett's narration was an excellent choice for a P&P variation. Her tone and pacing fit the period very well. She is also capable of doing appropriate voices for the cast of characters including men and French accents. I have listened to her before narrating the Cuckoo in Spring by Elizabeth Cadell. She is definitely a narrator that I will follow.

Fun Facts: Elizabeth Klett is from...(think about that beautiful English accent)... New Jersey! Abigail Reynolds states that her hobbies do NOT include sleeping or housework. I believe it! As a Physician and an Author (of a ton of books) when on Earth would she find time!

For those who like to know... there is absolutely no sex, foul language or violence. It's a lovely sweet clean read:)

I received Conceit and Concealment free in exchange for an unbiased review.

"Action packed version of an old favourite..."
If you could sum up Conceit & Concealment in three words, what would they be?

    Surprising, thrilling, moving:)
Well, I have to admit, after the first two hours of listening (and the whole audiobook is about 12 hours long) I felt a little disappointed, almost to the point when I really wondered whether to go on (the heat outside slows down my brain and my concentration, you know:))... I mean, it was sweet and basically reminded me a lot of "Pride and Prejudice" (except the change in the political background of the times...) but it was nothing special - no real surprises, no real tension, no suspence or heartbreaking romance... I thought it would be at most a 3 star book or even less... And then, in the third hour of listening there was such a huge twist in the plot... I mean, we know there's a secret in Darcy's life, but that particular revelation took the whole story to a completely different level:) From then on, there is almost nothing but constant action, twists and turns, and we definitely want Darcy and Lizzy to finally find their happiness... And there were definitely some moments that brought real tears to my eyes...
I've found some of the situations and the way the main characters behave not exactly plausible or realistic, and the story - at least for me - is not so much a variation of "Pride and Prejudice" as rather a completely new and inventive story using the same characters as its protagonists, but on the whole the book turned out to be a great and fascinating listen...:) So don't give up on it, listen on through the little uneventful beginning, it's worth the time:) - it kept me listening to 4 in the morning:) (it's a good thing it's Saturday today - no job waiting for me:):):))

Who was your favorite character and why?

It's Lizzy and Darcy, of course:) Lizzy is as we know her - brave, wise, caring and witty; Darcy gets more attention here - we learn to know the reasons behind his behaviour, so he's a much deeper character than the original Mr Darcy - or maybe "more human" would be a better term... Anyway, I like both his faces - the original stoic, mysterious, proud one and the one Ms Reynolds gave him:)

What does Elizabeth Klett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I liked Ms Klett's interpretation of the book a lot. As with the previous book read by her that I listened to, all the characters were given a distinctive voice. not even as much in the timbre or pitch, but rather through the way they spoke - which is a great ability for any narrator, I think:) Ms Klett really brings the characters to life with her acting abilities; the way she conveys their emotions makes them so much more real for me, so much more likeable or villainous...

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

As I said before, there are a few really emotional, moving moments in the book that made me shed a few tears, but I can't describe any of them because it would mean one huge spoiler...:) So I'm not going to answer this question at all:)
