Dick Powell established himself as a silver screen icon in the 1930s as the apple-cheeked crooning sensation in countless Depression-era musicals. But the 1940s found him playing every tough guy from Philip Marlowe to Richard Rogue...to Richard Diamond, private detective. Powell's portrayal of Diamond and his flawless chemistry with Virginia Gregg as the detective's socialite girlfriend, Helen Asher, brought the series' admiringly clever scripts to life.

Richard Diamond, Private Detective was one of the great gems of the last decade of commercial network dramatic radio. Tailor made for star Dick Powell, the sleuth is an amalgam of elements of Philip Marlowe with Powell’s own boy singer past. Diamond is a tough detective and while he often faces long odds and takes his beatings, he always rebounds with humor and style.

The detective character, Sam Spade, was created by Dashiell Hammett for his crime novel The Maltese Falcon. Spade was a hard-boiled detective with cold detachment, a keen eye for detail and unflinching determination to achieve his own justice. The character is most closely associated with Humphrey Bogart who played Sam Spade in the third and most famous film version of The Maltese Falcon. Publisher's summary
Created by Blake Edwards of The Pink Panther fame, Richard Diamond, Private Detective came to NBC radio in 1949 starring film actor and singer Dick Powell. Powell had recently played Philip Marlowe in the popular RKO film Murder, My Sweet and jumped at the chance to play a suave detective on radio.
Edwards' hard-boiled private detective scripts for Richard Diamond, Private Detective became NBC's answer to Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe, reflecting Edwards' unique humor. Richard Diamond was a lighthearted, New York-based private eye who enjoyed poking fun at the cops and singing songs to his millionairess girlfriend, Helen Asher, played by Virginia Gregg. The show's theme song, "Leave It to Love", was whistled by Powell at the beginning of each episode.
Powell's production company, Four Star Television, later produced a TV version of Richard Diamond, Private Detective for CBS in 1957, with David Janssen cast in the role of Diamond.
The exciting episodes in this collection are:
"The Fred Sears Murder Case" 6/19/49, "Tom Waxman Bomb Case" 6/26/49, "Charles Walsh to Kill Diamond" 7/9/49, "The Gibson Murder Case" 10/8/49, "The Newspaper Boy and the Ring" 10/15/49, "Death and the Package" 4/5/50, "Pete Rocco Breaks Jail" 10/4/50, "The Nancy Lang Case" 11/8/50, "The Marilyn Connors Case" 1/12/51, "A Man with a Scar" 1/19/51, "The Rollins Case" 1/26/51, and "The Gunsmith Case" 6/28/53.

Story
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.
