Story
The tutorial is over. The rules of Pyresouls have changed for the worse. Defeating the Burgon Beast should’ve been the end of it, but it was only the beginning. Beating the next boss monster that invades Earth will only stave off the Collapse, not prevent it. The future devoid of all life but a single Pyre proves that. Jacob refuses to accept that future. He’s done playing their games. Even if he must walk through the fires of despair and glory to be rid of them.

But a foolish attempt to prove his bravery leads Kai to unlock hidden power within himself and acquire a most unlikely ally. Rhona is a battle-scarred soldier who’s as likely to toss a quip as she is to throw a punch. Carl was a regular construction foreman. Not the worst, not the best, and definitely not the thinnest. Even so, he didn't deserve that heart attack! He really didn't deserve being reborn into a dog-eat-dog world as a dragon. To be fair, it’s nice to be at the top of the food chain. Now Carl just needs to learn how magic works, which monsters are safe to eat, and why his hoard is so important to him. Dealing with change is hard enough, but he has enemy dragons incoming, hostile environments, and foes constantly trying to get bragging rights by taking down a dragon.

Publisher's Summary
When Pyresouls released, it was a brutal new virtual reality game with a twist: The first to beat the game would win billions of dollars.
But after the Burgon Beast couldn’t be defeated, Pyresouls turned very real and unleashed an apocalypse of undead, monsters, and a system of levels and stats onto the world. For many years since, Jacob Windsor has fought with sword and shield to survive Post-Collapse Earth where only ancient, guilt-soaked weaponry can harm the monsters from Pyresouls.
While defending his bunker with some of the last refugees of humanity, yet another friend loses his life to secure one final hope: an enigmatic artifact capable of sending one person through time.
In a cruel twist of fate, Jacob becomes humanity’s best chance for survival. He takes the plunge into the past of the terrifying, fractured realm of Pyresouls, where every player is out for blood and the monsters are more vicious than anything on Post-Collapse Earth. Armed with knowledge of game mechanics, secret loot, and enemy weaknesses, along with well-honed swordsmanship from years of battle, Jacob has every possible advantage against the competition. But the choices he makes have long-reaching ripple effects on the timeline.
Can Jacob beat the clock while grinding out Levels and manage to avert the apocalypse, or will his every action darken the timeline even further?
This post-apocalyptic gamelit series includes battle, levelling, and gear-enhancing mechanics inspired by the Dark Souls games.

The author must think most of us readers are morons he is constantly Going over things and excruciating detail no matter how simple and basic it is That wouldn't be so bad except he explains the same simple thing multiple times within a couple of chapters of each other Finally this author is among many who seem to think all gamers are the same and don't actually Do things differently than other gamers not everyone is a mindless moron who only does the simple path

Just a cheap dark souls fan fiction with ambiguous world mechanics so the author can add or drop things as his plot needs to limp on. you could literally write a book on the ways that elements of this book fail. Just skip this book.

Alright story, felt rough and disjointed.
(Contains Mild Spoilers) The idea was pretty good and I was excited at first. After getting into the book a ways I felt like it dragged and was lacking. The inspiration was from souls like games which was an interesting premise for LitRPG. Character development felt non existent for everyone except the main character. The main antagonist for book 1 was barely in the book and changed at the end. For most other characters they made a couple of appearances and that was it. The main character time traveling component felt forced and really just a means to an end. That aspect only came into the story a handful of times and felt like it was inconsequential except for the ending. Many points of the story are rough and seem to operate with lore or backstory not disclosed to the reader.

Darksouls meets reborn apocalypse and it’s good.
The book is very dark souls. I’m fine with that and even like that. There were some inconsistencies in the story, needed to be story boarded a bit more. The MC was mostly smart was nice. The MC was over concerned about time management and didn’t farm as much as I think he should have. I would have like to seen I’m loot harder too. What about that good sword his friend told him about? What about the spell is friend told him about? He should have leveraged his advantage (foreknowledge). When he was going back to his time they should have realized that that timeline should have not picked his brain but vis-versa. I’ll get the next on for sure, had my full attention all the way through, 5 stars.

Good Book if not to picky
This book is an RPG novel that relies heavily on Dark Souls and Demons Souls for the game mechanics of the world. Other than the unoriginality of the game mechanics system the story is well written and the narration is very good as well. I would recommend the book if you have read, The Genesis Game: Volume I: World Apocalypse - Calamity Dungeon, The Reborn: Apocalypse series, or the Tower of Heaven Series

Nails the tone
Most people with a knowledge of games going into this book know where it draws inspiration from and I believe James Callum is able to sell the Medieval Gothic Horror of the Souls franchise throughout. Also the main character is able to strike a balance between the OP main character archetype and actually being able to fail and be punished for mistakes. Also mostly solid use of the magic system that was set up.
