Publisher's summary

He will protect this town.

Glenn Redwood has longed to become an Adventurer since he was a young boy, and has focused every waking moment since he turned 14 on leveling and growing stronger.

Answering the challenge of the Gods of Luxtera, he has fought Monsters to prove himself again and again. He has earned the right to travel the world and protect its people... but the Gods have other plans.

After they choose Glenn to become a Town Guard, he is charged with protecting his small town and everyone within. His dreams of traveling the world seem all but impossible. Even so, as he upgrades his new Town Guard Class, Glenn learns that one does need to travel abroad to find challenge, adventure, friendship, and even love.

And the people he wants most strongly to protect may have been in his small village all along.

Don't miss the start of a new LitRPG Adventure with strong-to-stronger progression, strategic battles, endearing characters, and slice-of-life elements. Join Glenn as he shows just how large a small town can be, making new friends and supportive allies as he gains experience for everything from Watching the Gate Quests to Slaying Attacking Monsters.

it's boring

it's boring, and slow. It would be fine if this was a slice of life title, but it's not. Also the title is a damn give away to HALF the plot after listening to 15 minutes of this snooze fest.

not worth your time unless you want to waste it.

The pacing is on the slow side .

The pacing is on the slow side, even for a slice of life story. The world building really restricts the agency of the characters.

Very Detailed

I enjoyed this book a lot. I like the progressesion of the MC and how even though he doesn't get the path he wants, he gets the path he's suited for. An issue I had with the book is the beginning felt as if it dragged on. I feel like the author could have trimmed down the fight in the beginning of the book. But don't let that stop from getting this book I would say it's worth it.

Bored

I would think that this book is intended for a teenage audience but there’s a lot of sexual innuendo but it’s not horrible but not for everyone

thoroughly enjoyed

I truly was entertained by this book. it had characters that I was excited to read about and even created some scenes that really tugged at my heart strings. I am a fan of this narrator as well. I hope the second book comes to audible as well.

blah blah blah I don't care

this story is needlessly wordy. no scene needs 26000 words to express and describe the emotions of an event and setting or even the inner monolog. Also, there's no need to describe the same scene from a different point of view if it doesn't add Significantly to the story. the narrator did a good job with this wordy drivel.

An Honest Review. *Will Contain Some Spoilers*

*****Final Verdict after finishing. 4.5*****
I finished the book; I enjoyed it and will be listening to the next one. It still has the issues that I talked about in the review, but I still enjoyed the ending. This book will not be for everyone, but I would recommend trying it if you can get past the slow pacing and despotic rule of the gods.

***SPOILER-FREE, NO REAL DETAILS PART***
At the moment of writing this review, I am 13 hours into the book and have 7 hours left to listen to it, and So far, the book is... Good... Mostly.

To summarize a tagline of the story is Don't miss the start of a new LitRPG Adventure with strong-to-stronger progression, strategic battles, endearing characters, and slice-of-life elements.

I think this story is on its way to fulfilling that, but it's filled with a bunch of caveats that come along with it.

-Strong to Stronger progression: Sure, it's going to have that, but it's slow and takes a long time for any progress to be made.
-Strategic Battles- Okay. So far, where I am at, there have been a few battles, but nothing that requires much strategy.
-Endearing Character: Yea, I like most of them a lot of the time, but every major character's fixation on sex is off-putting, at least to me it is, when almost every conversation major characters have with each other (in their down time) is filled with innuendos or just flat our sex jokes.
-Slife of life: So far, the Slife of life has just mostly been talking, sex jokes, or promiscuous behavior, or trying to be promiscuous behavior.

That some up my thoughts in a spoiler-free manner

*******
SPOILER PART

This part will contain spoilers discussing some of the issues I have further.

As I said, I like the story and concept, but there are caveats, at least there are for me personally, and many of those caveats come from the "gods" and their rules. They control everything, literally intervening and stopping people from free will actions.

Some examples.
Villagers cant leave town at night, or they die. Guards can't leave town unless the mayor allows it, or they die. Kids (below the age of 16) that try to make it to the second base are physically stopped. They will be physically forced away from each other; the gods decide your class, too. Want to be an adventurer and get to see the outside world? Better hope the gods give you the adventurer class and not anything else. It's not guaranteed, no matter what you do or how you try. And these are the good Gods.

This makes much of the story feel like it has an axe hanging over it. Pleasant moments with the MC and his girlfriend promising to be adventurers and be with each have a shadow looming over them because you know the MC is going to be a Town Guard, and the girl will not.

The People so far just accept their lot in life because the Gods are good, I guess, but it rubs me wrong. to see people's fates be forced away from what they choose at the whimseys of someone else. I have a feeling that this will become more relevant in the future as loopholes seem to play a small part in the story so far, but it's still annoying at the moment.

If anything changes toward the end of this book, I will update this, but as I said before, progress is slow.

DO GIVE THE BOOK A CHANCE, but it will not be for everyone.

no thanks

I couldn't finish this. I felt sorry for the people of this world having to live under such a tyrannical system. I mean, you die just because you deigned to go outside at the wrong time of day!? I mean, I get it's supposed to represent that these people are NPCs, but give your characters some more autonomy. they can't even choose what life they want to live!

not worth it.

The beginning is basically kids talking about wanting to do it then it gets boring and more people talking about doing it and then resolving everything in about half a chapter. Honestly the who "Romance " in this book is kinda cringy.
