Publisher's summary

Report from Engine Co. 82 is the story of one company of New York firefighters battling unimaginable death and destruction every day. Dennis Smith worked as a firefighter in the South Bronx, New York City, and the graphic detail and gripping prose of this firefighting classic drives the most important, accomplished, terrifying audiobook ever published on firefighting. This book struck a nerve within the nation when it was first published 30 years ago. In our troubled times, it gains even greater resonance for those trying to make sense of the deaths of so many New York firefighters on September 11, and for those inspired by the tireless work of firefighters and other rescue personnel in the aftermath of the destruction. Dennis Smith describes the bravery, heroism, camaraderie, and unflinching courage of New York's bravest, demonstrating how firefighters everywhere have become the most respected of American heroes.

I didn't want it to end

As a Young Firefighter it's amazing to hear stories from the war years. This books puts you in the rubber boots, rubber jacket, leather helmet and no airpark ways of how firefighting used to be. Every Firefighter should read it.

Humbling….

Every time I have read this book… And now I have read it multiple times and now listen to it once… It brings me down to earth, centers me, and humbles me, it reminds me why we do what we do… And we’re not as bad ass as we think we are… These old guys were doing it for real for a long time

Amazing story of the brotherhood.

Truly a heartfelt story, one after another. Thankful to be a firefighter, to hear such uplifting stories, to remind us why we do it.

If you liked Dispatches, give it a listen

Concise, descriptive language, and unflinching honesty. This book is an on the ground account of several fires and other calls in the South Bronx in a period of great racial tension. The humanity, suffering, poverty, and anger presented through direct observations.

A good listen from the firefighters perspective

Interesting first hand accounts from an old school NY firefighter. A lot has changed and a lot hasn’t. It was a good listen, with the long commute in and out of work. Best job I ever had.

An inspiring and eye opening take on FDNY FF

A wonderfully written perspective from an FDNY firemen in one of the busiest areas of NYC. A true dive into life in the firehouse and the day to days. A must read/listen.
