Publisher's Summary

Pride & Ownership holds no punches. Chief Rick Lasky takes a hard look at the fire service and finds it short on the only element that makes it effective: passion. Chief Lasky gives an upfront and honest criticism about the need to reignite the love of the job on every level, from chiefs and on down.

Do you have what it takes?

Not everyone is cut out for the fire service. It takes only the best to serve the public when people need help most. Pride and Ownership calls for men and women with honor and integrity to measure up to the task.

There's nothing else in the world like being a firefighter. Every day, Chief Lasky remembers why his job is the best in the world, and he brings that passion to Pride & Ownership. Lasky revisits the proud history and tradition of the fire service and reflects on the family values and brotherhood that have made firefighting a truly family-oriented vocation.

I had a hard time making my way through this.

I’d like to preface my review with saying that I truly appreciate all that Rick Lasky has done and will hopefully continue to do for fire service. He is well spoken and you can really tell that he is very proud of his job and cares about those around him.

That being said, I had to fight the constant urge to cringe while making my way through this book. I will never understand why so many in the fire service feel the need to seek attention. Our job is to help our communities, not to try and end up on the cover of firehouse/FE or to get thanked for our service. By all means feel free to wear your thin red line apparel anytime you go out into public to let everyone know you’re a hero but let’s just call it pride and tradition. This constant chest beating and need for hero worship is beyond toxic. I wish that we could just be silent professionals. I’m all for being prideful in your job and honoring traditions but where I draw the line is when it impedes progress. I think the fire service needs a little less attention seeking behavior and a little bit more cardio and training up on EMS. Also, firefighters are not “troops”, we are civilians, and if you want firefighters to learn/read more maybe we don't continue to charge $60 for a book.

A must read/listen for any fireman

I had been wanting to read Pride & Ownership for a few years now but never could make myself spend the money. However when I saw that it was here and narrated by the author I couldn't pass it up. It truly is a must read for anyone in the fire service no matter rank or experience. I will definitely be listening again.

Not what I was looking for

I have listened to a lot of different leadership books to help me be a more well rounded and informed company officer. This book was a lot of bullet points and had a couple nuggets of wisdom but not much different from other books I have listened to.

Good content

Content was good, flow of content at times a little choppy. Good history of why we do some things the way we do in the fire service.

A must read for every member of our profession!

Nothing more needs to be said. This book is the equivalent of a timeless ‘Mic-drop’ that carries as much pride as it does ownership. Get after it or get out!

Fabulous

What a tremendous book this was to listen to. You do not have to be in the fire service to appreciate it.
