Publisher's summary
The first and only author to win back-to-back Edgars for Best Novel. Every book a New York Times bestseller. After five years, John Hart is back.
Since his debut bestseller, The King of Lies, reviewers across the country have heaped praise on John Hart, comparing his writing to that of Pat Conroy, Cormac McCarthy and Scott Turow. Each novel has taken Hart higher on the New York Times Bestseller list as his masterful writing and assured evocation of place have won readers around the world and earned history's only consecutive Edgar Awards for Best Novel with Down River and The Last Child. Now, Hart delivers his most powerful story yet.
Imagine:
A boy with a gun waits for the man who killed his mother.
A troubled detective confronts her past in the aftermath of a brutal shooting.
After thirteen years in prison, a good cop walks free as deep in the forest, on the altar of an abandoned church, a body cools in pale linen…
This is a town on the brink.
This is Redemption Road.
Brimming with tension, secrets, and betrayal, Redemption Road proves again that John Hart is a master of the literary thriller.
Critic reviews
"This is a dark book, made all the darker by Shepherd's stagy interpretation."--AudioFile Magazine
“The depth of emotion in Hart’s words is palpable, and listeners will feel every nuanced sentiment that the characters are experiencing.”--Library Journal

Story
Fegan has been a "hard man" - an IRA killer in Northern Ireland. Now that peace has come, he is being haunted day and night by 12 ghosts: a mother and infant, a schoolboy, a butcher, an RUC constable, and seven other of his innocent victims. In order to appease them, he's going to have to kill the men who gave him orders. As he's working his way down the list, he encounters a woman who may offer him redemption; she has borne a child to an RUC officer and is an outsider too.

Ex-cop Jim Weir thought he'd seen it all during his years on the force. That is until he saw the body of his sister Annie, brutally used by a monster in human form, then carelessly discarded. When Weir learns that the only witness swore the killer made his escape in a Newport Beach squad car, his disbelief turns to confusion and outrage.

Work is a welcome refuge for New Orleans homicide detective Evangeline Theroux. Feeling suffocated by her new baby, in whose eyes she sees only her dead husband, she throws herself into a high-profile murder case. Reclusive writer Lena Saunders offers Evangeline a provocative theory about the crime: it is the work of a lunatic vigilante. Lena spins the sordid story of Ruth and Rebecca Lemay, whose mother brutally murdered her male children in an insane effort to root out an “evil” gene.

What’s happening in Acker’s Gap, West Virginia? Three elderly men are gunned down over their coffee at a local diner, and seemingly half the town is there to witness the act. Still, it happened so fast, and no one seems to have gotten a good look at the shooter. Was it random? Was it connected to the spate of drug violence plaguing poor areas of the country just like Acker’s Gap? Or were Dean Streeter, Shorty McClurg, and Lee Rader targeted somehow?

Fourteen-year-old Lalli was an incorrigible romantic. They grew up in Katra Sadatganj, an eye-blink of a village in Western Uttar Pradesh crammed into less than one square mile of land. On the western edge of Los Angeles is the gorgeous beachside city of Santa Monica, where the sun-kissed, wealthy residents seem to inhabit real-life California dreams. When movie-star-handsome heartthrob fitness coach Zack Doheny, is found dead on the floor of his gym, the tragedy shocks the elite community, especially those who’d spent many hours each week exercising with the charismatic trainer. As the narrative flashes back to the months leading up to Zack’s death, it quickly becomes clear that things in this coastal paradise are not as glittering as they seem.

The best! Great story and great narration
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely. The story is complex, nuanced and, at times, heartbreaking. The narration reminds me a lot of Will Patton who is so wonderful with the James Lee Burke books. Scott Shepherd's style is perfect for John Hart's complex plot. This is a perfect example of the right narrator for the right book.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Liz is the protagonist and my favorite character. She has defied her upbringing and has developed a complex ethical structure for her life. This is tested to the limits of her physical and emotional being.
Which scene was your favorite?
The end of the book is very satisfying as well as moving. To elaborate would be to ruin the end of the book for you so I will not.
There is an interview with the author at the end and I thoroughly enjoyed that as well. I advise you to listen to it.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Parts of this book are difficult to listen to as they involve people who mistreat others for their own benefit. There are very few laughs in this book and more than a few tears but you will be rewarded by characters who cannot be easily forgotten.

What a Book! What a performance!
John Hart is a terrific writer! This one ranks right up there with the classics in terms of vivid and compelling characters, story line, and gorgeous prose. I lived and loved this book from start to finish, emerging exhausted, bruised, and finally uplifted by the journey. Whew! I have read all of Hart's novels, and this one....this one!....is the best. Scott Shepherd read it perfectly. Sadness, anger, love, vile corruption, mental illness, brutality, betrayal....all character qualities demanding special voicing. Shepherd met all of the demands. Brilliant! I think this reading should win some kind of award.
I highly recommend this one!

John Hart knows how to write. He sees the inner soul of his characters and brings them to life for us to see and feel. Lovely writing, although somewhat predicable story. Pleasure to listen to.

Disappointing
I usually enjoy John Harts books and looked forward to this one. I was very disappointed. The characters were false and one demential and I found it hard to care about any of them. The story could have been excellent but it dragged on and on and was ruined by too many diversions. Sorry but this one wasn't worth the credit or the time.

Wonderfully Complex
I want to say this is a John Grisham novel that has undertones of the Shawshank Redemption, but that doesn't scratch the surface of this book. The writing is spectacular and the characters complex. The story is written in such a way where you are not left wanting. Everything is addressed, not rushed or glossed over, and you're left satisfied in the end. Ihave to say this is one of the best books I've ever read. I also have to mention the narration - it added an dimension to the story where I could see the characters. This is one of the best audiobooks I've ever experienced.

Good but so miserable
the characters are so miserable and the things that happen so awful and to so many of the main characters that I just found it depressing

An amazing story.
I was hooked from start to finish. The characters were so well written. I highly recommend it.
