Story
Based on 20 years of investigative reporting and interviews with 100 practicing physicians who embrace the keto lifetstyle as the best prescription for their patients' health, Taubes' book puts the ketogenic diet movement in the necessary historical and scientific perspective. It makes clear the vital misconceptions in how we've come to think about obesity and diet (no, people do not become fat simply because they eat too much; hormones play the critical role) and uses the collected clinical experience of the medical community to provide essential practical advice.

Almost every day we are bombarded with the seemingly incontrovertible message that we must reduce our consumption of meat and dairy—or eliminate them from our diets altogether. But what if the pervasive message that the plant-based diet will improve our health and save the planet is misleading—or even false? What if removing animal foods from our diet is a serious threat to human health, and a red herring in the fight against climate change.

Heart disease is the number-one killer. However, traditional heart disease protocols - with their emphasis on lowering cholesterol - have it all wrong. Emerging science is showing that cholesterol levels are a poor predictor of heart disease and that standard prescriptions for lowering it, such as ineffective low-fat/high-carb diets and serious, side-effect-causing statin drugs, obscure the real causes of heart disease. The Great Cholesterol Myth reveals the real culprits of heart disease.

Story
Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever. Obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10% of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical, society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup.

But the truth, as Dr. Fung reveals in this paradigm-shifting book, is that type 2 diabetes is reversible. Writing with clear, persuasive language, he explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucose-lowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease.

We all know the dangers of sugar and salt: but the danger attributed to the second white crystal has more to do with getting too little of it, not too much. Too little salt can shift the body into semi-starvation mode, causing insulin resistance, and may even cause twice as much fat to be absorbed for every gram that's consumed. Too little salt in certain populations can also actually increase blood pressure as well as resting heart rate.

Dish up the red meat, eggs, and whole milk! In this well-researched and captivating narrative, veteran food writer Nina Teicholz proves how everything we've been told about fat is wrong. For decades, Americans have cut back on red meat and dairy products full of "bad" saturated fats. We obediently complied with nutritional guidelines to eat "heart healthy" fats found in olive oil, fish, and nuts, and followed a Mediterranean diet heavy on fruits, vegetables, and grains. Yet the nation's health has declined. What is going on?

Since the introduction of dietary guidelines calling for reduced fat intake in the 1970s, a strange phenomenon has occurred: Americans have steadily, inexorably become heavier, less healthy, and more prone to diabetes than ever before. After putting more than two thousand of his at-risk patients on a wheat-free regimen and seeing extraordinary results, cardiologist William Davis has come to the disturbing conclusion that it is not fat, not sugar, not our sedentary lifestyle that is causing America’s obesity epidemic—it is wheat.

Story
One out of three women alive today, and one out of two men, will face a cancer diagnosis, according to the World Health Organization. Ty Bollinger takes this personally: in the course of a decade, he says, "I lost my entire family to cancer. I don't believe I had to lose them." The Truth about Cancer has been written for one simple reason: to share the knowledge we need to protect ourselves, treat ourselves, and in some cases save our lives or the lives of those we love.

The Nobel laureate Otto Warburg was widely regarded in his day as one of the most important biochemists of the 20th century, a man whose research was integral to humanity’s understanding of cancer. He was also among the most despised figures in Nazi Germany. As a Jewish homosexual living openly with his male partner, Warburg represented all that the Third Reich abhorred. Yet Hitler and his top advisors dreaded cancer, and protected Warburg in the hope that he could cure it.

You are just 10% human. For every one of the cells that make up the vessel that you call your body, there are nine impostor cells hitching a ride. You are not just flesh and blood, muscle and bone, brain and skin, but also bacteria and fungi. Over your lifetime, you will carry the equivalent weight of five African elephants in microbes. You are not an individual but a colony. Until recently, we had thought our microbes hardly mattered, but science is revealing a different story, one in which microbes run our bodies and becoming a healthy human is impossible without them.

Each of the patients was quite ill and obviously suffering with one or more very serious medical conditions. Prior to sedating each patient, Dr. Huggins asked Dr. Levy to administer a specific protocol of vitamin C. Dr. Levy had never performed, or even heard of such a practice, but was greatly impressed as each patient left the dental office markedly improved - many were asymptomatic.

A 20 hour therapy session.
Let me start by saying that I agree with almost everyone Dr. Tim Noakes and his co author Marika Sboros have to say about nutrition science and the real culprit of the diseases of civilization that have cropped up during this century. And yes, I agree Noakes was a victim here but he never lets you forget it. It's not quite whining, but it's close and the defensiveness in the book blunts the main message he has which again, I think is correct. In the end, I liked the story, liked the book, but didn't like the person.

Eye-opening story -Highly recommended.
Nicely organized story of a doctor put on trial for not conforming to white coat orthodoxy. He dared to disagree with the norms of the day and the medical board administered draconian measures. They should be ashamed but they have none. Amazing borage of wild accusation, all of which were proven false. This story unfolds in a very graceful way. Highly recommended.

Shocking reminder that politics and money are often arrayed against the truth
This is the story of how Tim Noakes, one of the world’s top scientists, was punished by South Africa’s medical association for daring to say what the evidence shows: Processed food harms and real food heals.
What ultimately landed Noakes in a legal trial was a single Tweet, but along the way through the twists and turns of the preliminary hearing and the appeal, it became evident that Noakes had fallen foul of the enormous vested interests of universities, professional organizations, food industries, and international pharmaceutical interests. It became imperative to teach him a lesson. Giving him a spanking in public would be a warning shot across the bows of any other dissident scientist. So, the medical regulatory body spent millions of South African Rand in an effort to silence him.
This is the story of the trial.
I won’t recount it all here, but if you have an interest in crime drama, or in politics, or if you’re wondering why everyone in your neighborhood has gotten sick and fat; this is a book for you! It doesn’t matter that you’ve never even thought of going to Cape Town in your life, the characters in this real-life story are familiar to us all, especially Prof. Noakes himself, force to choose between taking a punishment he didn’t deserve and slinking into obscurity with bank account intact, or to defend his honor and reputation regardless of cost.
Highly recommended reading (or listening to the expertly read audiobook). This book gave me hope for our collective chances.

Great book on a man with integrity, facing the odds of the nutritionist
I love this fact, based book about health. I have been on the low carb diet now for about a year and that has helped my health exponentially. I have been on the diet by Dr. berg, which is called a ketogenic diet and have been amazed at how I can go without food for 72 hours and not even feel hungry. I have felt much better help on this diet. I highly recommend the low-carb diet for anyone who It’s to be healthy

Fantastic book
A really admirable story, backed with solid references and in-depth scientific information. I’m a big fan of Dr. Noakes and I’m thankful for his knowledge and courage for speaking the truth in a world where that is becoming increasingly challenging.

More proof for why we should all be skeptical
When institutions have something to lose they respond by protecting themselves and truth takes a backseat. Then you get ridiculous behavior like what happened to Noakes. Truth won out in the end, as it always eventually does. Good book, good story.
