Publisher's summary

A seasoned military officer uncovers a deadly conspiracy on a distant, war-torn planet…

War heroes aren't usually called out of semi-retirement and sent to the far reaches of the galaxy for a routine investigation. So when Colonel Carl Butler answers the call from an old and powerful friend, he knows it's something big - and he's not being told the whole story. A high councilor's son has gone MIA out of Cappa Base, the space station orbiting a battle-ravaged planet. The young lieutenant had been wounded and evacuated - but there's no record of him having ever arrived at hospital command.

The colonel quickly finds Cappa Base to be a labyrinth of dead ends and sabotage: the hospital commander stonewalls him, the Special Ops leader won't come off the planet, witnesses go missing, radar data disappears, and that’s before he encounters the alien enemy. Butler has no choice but to drop down onto a hostile planet - because someone is using the war zone as a cover. The answers are there - Butler just has to make it back alive…

Excellent effort but not quite there

Lots of twists and turns (more of a mystery than a pure science fiction story). However, a lot of inconsistent details that editors used to catch when writers had editors. A little slow to get going but eventually makes it worthwhile. Shows a great deal of promise with every aspect of writing: character development, plot, humor and science (fiction) details. Next one should be 5 stars easy!

It is a unique take on future military sci fi!

I couldn't stop listening to this one, it keeps you interested the whole time and the main character feels familiar but not a cliche. This is a great read although ***kinda spoiler*** I wish we got a more complete ending!

Loved it! Military Space Opera at its finest!

This book was much better as an Audio Book than it was to read. I cannot wait to listen to the next book in the series.
Well done!

Fantastic! Perfectly executed and Narrated

I picked this out of the pile of military SF by debut authors solely because R.C. Bray did the narration, as his sense of how to add tone to military work is unrivaled.

What a wonderful surprise to get a terrific genre-blending novel from a first time author. Michael Mammay sets a solid police-procedural story in the future world of a high technology military occupation as if he lived there. His insights from years spent as a soldier color the interactions of the characters and inform the movement and operation that act as the base and the spice to a well-plotted, perfectly-paced, missing soldier mystery. There are even some shades of Apocalypse Now mixed in if you look closely enough

I'm very impressed and I hope we'll see more in the future about Colonel Carl Butler.

Enjoyable.

I really enjoyed this book and found the ending to be unexpected and refreshing.

The ethical implications in the book are alluded to and make me wonder if the MC is not really the villain.

Worth a Credit

If you’ve enjoyed any book narrated by R.C. Bray, you’ll enjoy this one.

Yeah, the ending is unconventional. But it doesn’t suck. It’s just different. I liked the variation.

I’d describe this book as Harry Bosch meets the Arisen Series.

Glad there’s a sequel!

Great listen

I kept coming back to this book every time I was looking for a new one to listen to. I don't know why I didn't pick it up before, but I finally pulled the trigger. It was even better then I thought. I am anxiously waiting for Spaceside coming out in August 2019. It doesn't hurt that the master, Mr. RC Bray, worked his usual magic.
