Publisher's Summary

Period Power is a profound but practical blueprint for aligning daily life with the menstrual cycle, to give all menstruators a no-nonsense explanation of what the hell happens to us every month and how we can use each phase to its full advantage.

Ninety per cent of people who have periods experience symptoms of PMS, a syndrome which features a wide range of signs and symptoms, and yet there's an enduring lack of understanding about what it actually is and a disappointingly meagre range of treatment options.

So many of us have a Jekyll and Hyde experience of our lives; we feel on top of the world, capable, confident and sexy for part of each month, then find ourselves in a state of physical and emotional discomfort and fatigue, wanting nothing more than to collapse on the sofa in front of Netflix.

But what if instead of just trying to plan for our dark days, we were equipped with ways to improve them? What if our desire to improve ourselves could be combined with our need to know just what our womb and ovaries are getting up to every month?

Not to mention how to take advantage of the natural superpowers that sit in each phase of our cycle so that we can plan our month to perform at our best.

Maisie Hill is uniquely placed, as an acupuncturist, women's health practitioner and doula, to explain just how we can achieve this as well as focusing on particular milestones that require an altered approach, such as coming off hormonal birth control, infertility, pregnancy, motherhood and the perimenopausal years.

Using what Hill calls 'The Cycle Strategy' - a secret weapon when it comes to improving our relationships, career and health - Hill will give us all the information we need to make sense of our cycles as well as accessible and practical suggestions through which we can improve our physical symptoms and stop berating ourselves because of the way we evolve through each menstrual month.

This book is LIFE-CHANGING

Knowing EVERYTHING about your cycle is powerful. Tuning in to your daily, weekly and monthly cues frees you up to focus on the other parts of your life in a healthy, balanced way. Maisie Hill explains all you would ever want to know in an accessible and interesting manner. There are even dedicated chapters for your first period and menopause - which will be a tremendous help for my daughter, and for me later in life. I can’t imagine how puberty would have been different if I had this book. Now I have such a greater understanding of my body and feel in control. Read this book and harness the power of your cycle.
One last thing: I really valued how the author carefully chose her language/pronouns and acknowledged that not all menstruators are women and not all women menstruate. She also included a very powerful section on period poverty and ways to help while accounting for the bias her own privilege brings to the conversation. It was inspiring and a good example of how to go about affecting social justice.
And a last, last thing: I got the audio version too which Maisie Hill reads herself, and it is fantastic.

Quack quack...

So. Much. Woo. 😔

Save your money and look for a book about the menstrual cycle that sticks to facts and evidence.

There are portions of this book, like the first section, which provide a genuinely helpful insight into how our cycles work from a biological perspective. I did learn a lot about my body.

But (and it’s a big one) beyond that there is so much woo and quackery that I almost couldn’t finish the book (I held out in case there were any more nuggets of useful information - there weren’t)

Beyond the pseudoscientific “treatments” I also find it unhelpful to suggest restricting one’s life and work according to a *largely* arbitrary set of “seasons”. Who in the real world can reorganise all public speaking to land on a handful of days in the month? Or to restrict creativity, socialising, introspection, developing plans etc etc according to someone else’s imposed timetable? I really do find it odd in 2019 to be restricting women to be slaves to the monthly calendar. Feels like a real step away from equality.

And if you don’t believe me about the cycle seasons being largely arbitrary, try the section for those not menstruating (trans/post menopausal etc) which explains how you can just map the seasons into the phases of the moon!

How about this gem: “There hasn’t been much research on [cod liver oil packs], but it’s been used by women for over 100 years and is proven to work” (proven without research???)

If it sounds like a duck... 🦆

BLOODY AMAZING

If you love science and the why’s and how’s of our body then I couldn’t recommend this book more. I personally have taken nutrition courses and hormone courses previously and this book is SO COMPREHENSIVE it’s blown my mind.

Maisie knows her stuff without a shadow of a doubt. Definitely not a light read, it’s incredible informative and could even be a course in itself! Something all females should listen to!✨
Thank you for sharing such wisdom!

Give this book to all your daughter's

This book is so much more than the title suggests. I thought I knew a bit about the menstral cycle but this book so very thorough and where it supported my knowledge it went on in deeper detail. Who knew you needed to know so much detail? Well you do. It's a tool for a woman to know herself mentally and physically. Every woman should have this book to reclaim our bodies and your life.
It's an unusual thing to say but I have always loved my cycle and now I love it even more. It's sad that I have only just read this book when nearing the end of my reproductive years. I can't wait to give it to my daughter but at 9 much of it will go over her head but in a couple of years... I even want my husband to read it because there are many things about health in general. The section on parabens and the like in everyday household products was a bit scary but the section on food and diet was worth the price of purchase alone. I listen to an awful lot of books like this on audible but this is the first review I have written. I like it that much. Thank you Maisie Hill. Writing this book is a great act of generosity. May there be a multitude of Goodnight stories for Rebel girls books because of you. Or the opposite - the obsolescence of marginalising gender differentiation and a world emancipated from masculine oriented norm representations.

The first half of this book should be required rea

The first half of this book should be required reading for all young women. Some of the tactics I remain sceptical of (caster oil packs & the heavy emphasis on organic food & acupuncture - its all a bit too new age for me) but the cycle tracking, biological explainations and advice for specific menstrual issues was fascinating. Its explained in an easy to understand way without being patronising. I learnt a lot.

Don’t waste your money/credit

I can’t review this book any better than ‘music lover’ did.

I really wanted to like this book, and it got of to a promising start. The first section which focuses on the anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive system is interesting.

The rest of the book is just padding and or pseudoscience nonsense. It very much reminds me of reading a horoscope. Hill with makes claims that can neither be proved or disproved, or says a lot without really saying anything at all.

In the end I couldn’t even use this book to help me fall asleep at night because I found Hill’s narration annoying.

Save your money or credit- avoid!

buy the book!

I loved this book, and found it very informative and interesting. Only thing I'd say is that I wish I had gone straight to buying the physical book as there are so many bits I want to flick back and forward between, and I'm going to have to buy it now!

Life changing

I love this book. I stumbled across Period Power on audible, having never given much thought to my cycle. This book contains what we should have been taught about our bodies as young women and how we can utilise and embody all that our cycle offers us. It's written in a way that makes the subject matter accessible in a jargon free way. Maisie' s personal experience and humour make it engaging and relatable. I love that she is narrating it herself. Since listening to this book my conversations have changed with my female friends and relatives. All of which are now interested in charting their cycle. Strongly recommend for every women as this book is for all ages.

MIND BLOWING

There is so much awesomeness in this book, I don’t know where to start.

We have all been kept in the dark about periods/bodies for far too long (thanks, Patriarchy) and this book is so informative and useful.

It is also brilliant in being so intersectional and inclusive - incredible to hear.

Everyone needs to read this book, especially if you are a person born with a uterus.

Thank you, Maisie!
