#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A groundbreaking manifesto on living better and longer that challenges the conventional medical thinking on aging and reveals a new approach to preventing chronic disease and extending long-term health, from a visionary physician and leading longevity expert

“One of the most important books you’ll ever read.”—Steven D. Levitt, New York Times bestselling author of Freakonomics

Wouldn’t you like to live longer? And better? In this operating manual for longevity, Dr. Peter Attia draws on the latest science to deliver innovative nutritional interventions, techniques for optimizing exercise and sleep, and tools for addressing emotional and mental health.

For all its successes, mainstream medicine has failed to make much progress against the diseases of aging that kill most people: heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and type 2 diabetes. Too often, it intervenes with treatments too late to help, prolonging lifespan at the expense of healthspan, or quality of life. Dr. Attia believes we must replace this outdated framework with a personalized, proactive strategy for longevity, one where we take action now, rather than waiting.

This is not “biohacking,” it’s science: a well-founded strategic and tactical approach to extending lifespan while also improving our physical, cognitive, and emotional health. Dr. Attia’s aim is less to tell you what to do and more to help you learn how to think about long-term health, in order to create the best plan for you as an individual. In Outlive, readers will discover:

• Why the cholesterol test at your annual physical doesn’t tell you enough about your actual risk of dying from a heart attack.
• That you may already suffer from an extremely common yet underdiagnosed liver condition that could be a precursor to the chronic diseases of aging.
• Why exercise is the most potent pro-longevity “drug”—and how to begin training for the “Centenarian Decathlon.”
• Why you should forget about diets, and focus instead on nutritional biochemistry, using technology and data to personalize your eating pattern.
• Why striving for physical health and longevity, but ignoring emotional health, could be the ultimate curse of all.

Aging and longevity are far more malleable than we think; our fate is not set in stone. With the right roadmap, you can plot a different path for your life, one that lets you outlive your genes to make each decade better than the one before.

“In Outlive, Peter Attia explores the science of not just prolonging life, but also prolonging aliveness. Attia makes the crucial connection between overall health and relational health.”—Esther Perel, New York Times bestselling author, psychotherapist, and podcast host of Where Should We Begin?

“Finally, there is a modern, thorough, clear, and actionable manual for how to maximize our immediate and long-term health. Firmly grounded in data and real-life conditions, Outlive makes obvious which actions we all need to take, and just as important, what all we need to pay attention to in order to live a long, vital life. As the most accurate and comprehensive health guide published to date, Outlive is not just informative, it is important.”—Andrew Huberman, PhD, professor, Department of Neurobiology at Stanford University School of Medicine, creator of the Huberman Lab podcast

I almost didn’t purchase this audiobook because I read a review that said the author spent 18 hours sharing what could have been boiled down to 4–that the book was filled with unnecessary anecdotes and overly detailed medical explanations, and that meat of the book was in the last 4 chapters. I could not disagree more. This book is not designed to teach you step-by-step how to live longer. It is designed to get you to think differently about your health and aging. It is designed to wake you up to the ways our healthcare system is failing us and give you comprehensive strategies to take control of your own health…to be the driver instead of the passenger as Peter says. Instead of saying “do this” or “don’t do this”, Peter unpacks the biological processes that lead to the most common causes of death and decay as we age (i.e., cancer, type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s…what he calls “the four horsemen”), and describes how we can spot the warning signs for these diseases 20, 30, even 50+ years before anything would ever be noted during a yearly physical.

My whole life I have heard people say “exercise more, sleep more, eat less”. But it wasn’t until I read this book that I was convinced to make sweeping lifestyle changes. That’s because this book does three things: 1) it demonstrates with a combination of meticulous research and compelling stories just how much damage we regularly do to our bodies through our modern diet and lifestyle, 2) it presents an alternative view of aging and what is possible in the final decades of life that feels at once miraculous and attainable, and 3) it lays out exactly what we should be aiming for in our efforts to be healthier (not just at the superficial level of “lower your blood pressure and ‘bad’ cholesterol “, or “exercise 45 minutes a day, 4 times a week”, but with much more precision) and *why*. What happens in your body when you get 6 hours of sleep instead of 8? What happens to your cells when you consume more energy than you can expend? What happens when leave Zone 2 during a workout? What even is “Zone 2”?

All in all, this book was life changing for me. My only “critique” is that there is so much in this book that I want to be able to reference regularly…and an audiobook format is not conducive to that. But never fear, as soon as I finished the audiobook, I immediately purchased a hard copy.

Thanks, Peter and team for all of the hard work that went into this book. You’re saving lives.

Life changing

I am a long-time fan of health optimization which, as Dr. Attia points out, is often a surrogate for people who want to control things -- even impossible things -- like their own heath outcomes. While you can't control or "hack" health, the book is full of honest and practical advice that would be useful for anyone. He ends the book with a powerful section on mental health, sharing his own challenges and highlighting that even people with outwardly "perfect" lives often have to struggle to be the kind of person they want to be for family, friends, and community. Logically organized and relatively easy to follow for a technical subject like health, it strikes a good balance between specific, actionable information and the larger frameworks for human health. I think it also makes clear that the current medical system will treat you when you (inevitably) have a problem, but that nobody is going to "come save you" with proactive, preventative health measures. You are responsible for you (and your loved ones) and this book can/will help you in that regard.

A Valuable and Honest Guide to Health Improvement

I have been a huge fan of the Drive podcast for years and as a physician have argued, we should be practicing medicine 3.0 for sometime now. I am also a Stanford trained emergency medicine physician and there is a one and eight chance that I was the second year ER resident who intubated the lady who coded in the Stanford ER during Peter’s second year of medical school, that he refers to, I did find that interesting. this book is probably one of the most important books that I have read in medicine in the last 25 years. He is completely right that medicine 2.0 is all about letting us get sick and then the healthcare system and the pharmaceutical companies make billions of dollars off of us being ill. the real goal is how to extend one’s health span, and this book is a wonderful blueprint every physician, every healthcare provider, and quite frankly, every healthcare administrator should read this book

It was worth the wait!!!

This book informs us in a balanced and scientific way about how are bodies work and what nutrition and exercise can do to improve our lives without an iota of confirmation bias or ulterior motive. The last chapters are beautiful.

Finally! Exactly the kind of health book we need

Well written. Well read. I didn’t expect all the personal stories from Peter’s life, but they greatly added to my enjoyment of the book and going forward, I am sure, to my enjoyment of his podcasts

This book does an incredible job of explaining complex biological systems in a way that is easily understood. Dr. Attia uses visual and descriptive analogies that allow the reader to grasp the intricate workings of our bodies. Only half way through but I am learning so much about my own health and the health of my family members to better approach our lives. Highly recommend this book for everyone to learn more about their body now and what the future can hold. This book fills the reader with excitement and facilitates a better understanding of our internal systems encouraging ownership of personal health and the choices we all make.
