Publisher's summary

Brigitte Gabriel lost her childhood to militant Islam. In 1975 she was 10 years old and living in Southern Lebanon when militant Muslims from throughout the Middle East poured into her country and declared jihad against the Lebanese Christians, which became the first front in a worldwide jihad of fundamentalist Islam against non-Muslim peoples. For seven years, Brigitte and her parents lived in an underground bomb shelter, without running water or electricity and very little food. Because They Hate is a political wake-up call. Brigitte warns that the United States is threatened by fundamentalist Islamic theology in the same way Lebanon was - radical Islam will stop at nothing short of domination of all non-Muslim countries. Fiercely articulate and passionately committed, Gabriel tells her own story as well as outlines the history, social movements, and religious divisions that have led to this critical historical conflict.

It's the world's second-largest religion. Listen to more of our titles about Islam.

Critic reviews

"A compelling and captivating personal story with a powerful lesson about threats to freedom in our time." (R. James Woolsey, Director of Central Intelligence, 1993-95)

"Brigitte Gabriel's story is at once intensely personal and possesses global significance....[Her] words should be read, and studied carefully, by all the law enforcement and government officials of the West as well as by everyone who values freedom." Best audio book I've listened to, do date!

I've listened to well over two dozen audio books from Audible. I'd have to say the Middle East, Israel, Islam, etc., are at the top of my reading and listening list.

I have read and listened to such great scholars, historians and writers as Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer, Dore Gold, Kenneth Timmerman, Bernard Lewis, Martin Gilbert, Paul Johnson, etc.

Brigitte Gabriel --- "Because They Hate" --- has got to be amongst the most riveting and captivating of all!

Why do I say this? Because unlike many of our great scholars and writers, Brigitte Gabriel lived it. She knows the Arab world and the Muslim-Arab mind on an intimate and a personal level. Her life's story in southern Lebanon is compelling, shocking, gripping and at times heartrending.

She speaks with passion and authority. I am not putting down scholarship and I will continue to study our many fine scholars and experts, yet this book is a must for anyone interested in the threat we face here in the west. It's superb!

Impressive but...

You can't help but be impressed, sobered, scared, and angered by the true-life story told by Brigitte Gabriel. She is articulate, thoughtful, and brave and has seen radical Islam from a perspective few in the USA can share. Her great fear is that the same tragedy that befell Lebanon also awaits us because we too will fail to understand the enemy until it is too late. If you have ever worried that it may not be possible to negotiate with radical Islam, then this book will probably confirm your worst fears.

It is unfortunate, however, that the author doesn't limit her book to describing what she has seen and experienced, because when she wanders into analysis, generalizations, and solutions, her voice is not so sure.

For example, she vilifies the ACLU with a contempt that simply could not be conveyed if she weren't reading the book herself. It is also understandable that she would have a warm spot for Israel since they were much kinder to her than was her own country, but she puts Israel on a pedestal that the facts just don't support. Finally, she seems to jump from legitimate concerns about the threat of militant Islam to total support for everything the Right in this country has proposed without so much as glancing around for alternatives.

I found her story very compelling and frightening which I think was her main objective. However, I think her solutions could use some work.

Because They Hate

This book should be required reading for all Americans especially those holding public office or working in the news media. The Author Brigitte Gabriel describes in detail how her Country Lebanon was destroyed and after years of terror she had to move to Israel and finally to the United States to flee the Palistinians and Islamist Terrorists who tried to assinate her.She is an intelligent author and brave Patriot. It is especially appropriate for those who blame America first and think it can't happen to us!

Because they hate

This is definitely a five star rating. Even as I listened more and more of what she said comes true. I hope some politicians take the time to read or listen. I want the book in my library.

Don't miss this one!

Excellent audio book, narration by author is very effective. A must read-listen to learn what is driving the Muslim religion-culture. She clearly demonstrates that the violent, dishonest "extremist" Muslims are in fact following the teachings of their prophet Mohammed and have become the driving force of the religion. Those moderate Muslims, like those of Nazi Germany, are ineffective in quelling this movement due fear of death. Like the rise of Nazi Germany, the author cautions against appeasement and like Winston Churchill warns against this gathering storm.

Wake up America!

This is a scarey book. We are in deep trouble if we don't heed this advice. Our lawmakers are giving this country away.

Very good account but.....

Very compelling book. I agree with the reviewer 'Dale' that his is a frightful telling of her life story in Lebanon, being terrorized by the Arab-Muslim states that surround it.
I found her memoirs a bit too detailed in parts. I know ahe was trying to convey a one-time idyllic life as a child but the exact color and shape of her 6th birthday dress are rather irrelevant. I also aggree that she seems to place Israel and Israelis on pedestals, which is surely not deserved in the grand scheme of things. She blames the Carter and Clinton administrations for being 'soft' on terrorism (a favorite Bush campaign rhetoric). Her analysis of the situation is, however, generalized and she cannot offer sound solutions (in her defense, none of us are able to) as the gaining popularity of Islam seems to be a run-away-train leading to destruction of the west as we know it.

She gets a bit preachy in the end, reciting some examples over and over, but nonetheless, this is a must listen as it is important in that it contributes to our understanding that Muslims worldwide are following the teachings of the Quar'an, which demands complete conversion for all of mankind. She rightfully points out that there really isn't any 'moderate' Islam, and that as Americans and Europeans, we need to wake up and see this fact for what it is if we want to continue living in a free society.

Awesome!

First of all, I became interested in this book after listening to Bridgett Gabriel on various radio interviews. Her stories of how Lebanon disintegrated from a Christian metropolis into a Palestinian terror state that first targeted the Lebanese and then Israel is spoken with incredible integrity and truth.

Her credibility to speak of the threats that radical Islam present are unparalleled. Her gut wrenching accounts of her life and standard of living while in Lebanon are almost unbearable to read/listen to due to the magnitude of the tragedy.

The listen ability of this audio book is very high. Ms. Gabriel is the reader and at times you can feel the pain and anguish she has suffered and been witness to.

Overall, this book is on my must read list and I am already bugging all of my friends to go out and pick it up.

Buffled

Ms. Gabriel is too harsh on the Lebanese people, culture and customs, yet I ask, since she considers herself a Lebanese, her parents were Lebanese, her friends were Lebanese, the martyr Chuck was Lebanese, aren't all those individuals decent, loving, caring people? I have been around like she has and met the good, the bad, and the ugly (spirit) in every country and in every nation and in every society. Her work otherwise is a good representation of how we lived our lives, both Moslems and Christians and how our childhood innocence was robbed from us by feudal and immoral leaders and politicians. The sad part is that those politicians and their heir are still in power and still dragging Lebanon and another innocent generation into the abyss of another civil war.
