Publisher's summary

Rebecca Rule is the sheriff of Refuge, New Hampshire. Her biggest concern is the rowdy summertime revelers making their way up from Massachusetts and New York. With most of the town's residents in neighboring Ashland, for the Fourth of July fireworks show, Refuge is quiet. That is, until the Baptist Church's bell starts ringing - on its own.

The bell chimes faster and faster, reaching a frenetic pace, as though rung by the Devil himself. But the bell is just the beginning. The air shimmers. The night-time sky fills with a burning red aurora. The moon, previously a crescent, is now full. And just hours after dusk, the sun returns to the sky, revealing an endless desert where there was once a mountainous pine forest.

Rule must guide the confused and frightened residents of Refuge through the first terrifying hours of acclimating to this horrifying new environment, while protecting them from inhuman dangers both inside and outside of the town's newly clean-cut borders.

In a world gone haywire, only one thing is certain, no one in Refuge will ever forget the night of the blood sky.

Refuge is a serialized novel, co-authored by #1 Amazon.com horror author, Jeremy Bishop, and five other authors, including Amazon.com best sellers Kane Gilmour and David McAfee, USA Today best seller, Robert Swartwood, and newcomer Daniel Boucher.

An interesting setup for this mystery

Would you listen to Night of the Blood Sky again? Why?

Yeah, I would listen to it again. It was interesting enough to hold my attention, but short enough that going through it again wouldn't take up too much time and I could really hone in on the details. Plus Kafer is phenomenal as always.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Well, it was the setup to the series....you kind of knew going in something was going to happen.

What about Jeffrey Kafer’s performance did you like?

He's always got an even tone, but an edge to his voice when the time is right and the scene demands it.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, it was an average thriller serial.

Beware a cliff hanger!

I thoroughly enjoyed this listen. There were great, complete characters and it draws the listener along just as a thriller should. It's beautifully read.

But seriously. It really ought to be one book of two or three parts. If you're looking for any kind of resolution for just the one credit or purchase, you are not going to be a happy camper. If you don't mind that sort of thing, then dive in. It's very reminiscent of later Stephen King.

You're in for a treat!

What did you love best about Night of the Blood Sky?

The unexpected and unusual are what make this a great story. Nothing is as you would think it would be. It's like a wonderful lost episode of the "Twilight Zone".

Who was your favorite character and why?

Avalon-she has her issues, but when push comes to shove, she steps up.

What about Jeffrey Kafer’s performance did you like?

He does does a wonderful performance of sarcastic, DT-ridden young female. (Avalon). He does a great job of bringing not only the characters to life, but the whole story-the town, the world beyond, that ominous bell.

If you could rename Night of the Blood Sky, what would you call it?

No, I wouldn't .-the name captures the essence of the story quite well.

Any additional comments?

This is a wonderful listen, and I am eager for more.

Must know next installment!

Would you consider the audio edition of Night of the Blood Sky to be better than the print version?

The audio version HAS to be better, because it is full of the storytelling vocal paintings of Jeffrey Kafer. Looking at the printed word cannot compare to the imagery created by this narrator.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Sheriff Rule was my favorite character. She was a no-nonsense, kick-ass law enforcement officer, with courage and dedication to her community.

Have you listened to any of Jeffrey Kafer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my first listen of Mr. Kafer's work. It will certainly not be my last!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The suspense regarding the question of what was actually going on in the town kept me glued to my computer.

Any additional comments?

Mr. Kafer is a masterful storyteller! I cannot wait to download the next installment in this epic. Full disclosure: I was provided with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest and forthright review.

Wanting more

What did you love best about Night of the Blood Sky?

Excellent narration of the happenings of a quiet new England town's not so quiet evening. Very good pace set by narrator keeping the mystery going. Character's were interesting, and the only problem with this book is that it leaves you wanting more. Being book 1, you'll want to continue on with the series. You become attached to the characters and curious as to what is making the events happen. Creative intriguing story coupled with a great narrator, how could you go wrong...

Who was your favorite character and why?

The sherrif was my favorite character because, she is a strong female character, and she puts differences aside to make sure the town is safe.

Who was the most memorable character of Night of the Blood Sky and why?

spoiler-
the creatures that came out of the sand. The fact that they carried swords and had clothing, implies that they may have had some kind of culture.

An interesting story.

This book reads like the first episode in a miniseries, but I guess that's the point since it's part of a serial. Personally, I would have enjoyed a longer book that got more into the story and into the characters. The ending didn't feel like a cliffhanger so much as a conclusion to a short story. There were a couple of awkward sentences and plot holes, but they were small. The space similes were a bit heavy handed, but overall I thought it was a pretty good story.

I thought that Jeffrey Kafer did a pretty good job. The narration could have used some more inflections, but the pacing was nice.

An interesting story.

Excellent Terror From the Sky in Refuge

What did you love best about Night of the Blood Sky?

I loved this whole story from whenever Winslow and his wife were at their observatory to when the church bells began ringing. There was a little of his history of working at JPL as well. I liked when Cash and Avalon were sitting in the bar and in walks Rule. I liked all the characters. They were all very well individualized.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character was Rule. She was a strong female protagonist in this story. I like all her little nuances. I liked when she made Frost sheriff. Great dialogue.

Which character – as performed by Jeffrey Kafer – was your favorite?

I would have to say Dodge. Jeffrey's New England accent was great. They were ALL very well executed.

If you could rename Night of the Blood Sky, what would you call it?

'Night of the Blood Sky' is perfect but if I HAD to rename it I suppose 'Terror from the Sky'. It was good and scary in a better than Close Encounter way. I loved it and want to listen to them all!

Any additional comments?

This is just ONE of the terrific stories from a 5 part series. I received this audiobook free of charge in exchange for an unbiased review.Loved it!
