Publisher's summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE • THE BLOCKBUSTER JACK REACHER SERIES THAT INSPIRED THE STREAMING SERIES REACHER

Never Go Back is a novel of action-charged suspense starring “one of the best thriller characters at work today” (Newsweek).

Former military cop Jack Reacher makes it all the way from snowbound South Dakota to his destination in northeastern Virginia, near Washington, D.C.: the headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP. The old stone building is the closest thing to a home he ever had.

Reacher is there to meet—in person—the new commanding officer, Major Susan Turner, so far just a warm, intriguing voice on the phone.

But it isn’t Turner behind the CO’s desk. And Reacher is hit with two pieces of shocking news, one with serious criminal consequences, and one too personal to even think about.

When threatened, you can run or fight.

Reacher fights, aiming to find Turner and clear his name, barely a step ahead of the army, and the FBI, and the D.C. Metro police, and four unidentified thugs.

Combining an intricate puzzle of a plot and an exciting chase for truth and justice, Lee Child puts Reacher through his paces—and makes him question who he is, what he’s done, and the very future of his untethered life on the open road.

Critic reviews

“A breathless cross-country spree . . . some of the best, wiliest writing [Lee] Child has ever done . . . Child’s bodacious action hero, Jack Reacher, has already tramped through 17 novels and three e-book singles. But his latest, Never Go Back, may be the best desert island reading in the series. It’s exceptionally well plotted. And full of wild surprises. And wise about Reacher’s peculiar nature. And positively Bunyanesque in its admiring contributions to Reacher lore.” (Janet Maslin, The New York Times)

“An adrenaline-charged, action-packed thriller . . . impossible to put down.” (Lansing State Journal)

“The dialogue has never been sharper. . . . The pages turn themselves.” (San Antonio Express-News)

Satisfying Reacher story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. I think this is an excellent series.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the new dimension added to Reacher when he learns he might be a father. Lee Child never disappoints me with his Reacher stories.

What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Dick's voice is both powerful and flawed. He sounds like Reacher to me, very worldly and experienced but not at all sophisticated. Reacher doesn't put on airs. Neither does Dick Hill.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Jack Reacher is NOT Tom Cruise.

Jack Reacher

I have followed The Jack Reacher series for years. Each one as good as the last. The narrator Dick Hill has just the right voice to help bring Jack to life.

Captivating Again!

Ya never know Jack's past will show up to haunt him But you always know he is a lover and a fighter. He's head strong and no B.S. attitude gets him in and out of tight situations that just make me keep turning those pages!!!

Another great Reacher book

Lee Child hit another one out of the park with this book. Dick Hill does a great job of reading it would not be Reacher without Dick Hill’s reading

the story is short and anti-climatic

I'm a fan of the Reacher novels, this one felt like it was written while waiting for a layover somewhere. Climax is weak, the mystery is somewhat uninteresting. it doesn't add anything to Reacher's overall story, I recommend skipping it.

Dick Hill, the narrator, such a voice. Never stereotypical, all unique characters

The movie was good but child is always better, get the drug from the source, uncut. Reacher, as always, said nothing.

Worthwhile.

One one hand, the story was up to the author’s usual high standard. One the other, this is an abridgment. Overall, I enjoyed seeing how this story, good on its own, was changed and improved when it was turned into a feature film. Dick Hill was born to read, Reacher books.

Predictable

I’m a little disappointed with the story, a little uneventful and predictable. Dick Hill did another good job but the story was a little boring for a Jack Reacher novel.
