Publisher's summary

President Jesse Wood has a mission for Christian Gillette: post-Communist Cuba. There are secret negotiations going on with senior capitalists in Cuba concerning the U.S., and the president wants Gillette to handle it. It is clear, however, that if the discussions ever came to light, the trail cannot lead back to the Oval Office.

Seeing no option but to accept the dangerous mission, Gillette heads to Florida with best friend and bodyguard Quentin Stiles, leaving his capable and alluring protege, Allison Wallace, in charge of Everest. They are soon 1,000 miles apart and both in grave danger - and now they aren't able to help each other to survive.

Kept me on the edge of my seat.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would because the story never got boring. You hope that a "business thriller" like this one doesn't disappoint, especially since they got Mr. Graham (the nest narrater ever) to do it. Well, coming from a listener who loves the bloody stuff like Seal Team Six and the Joe Ledger Series, this one could contend with them. It's not bloody, but the action keeps you interested. It's also an interesting twisting plot about a revolution, a revolt, and a poor cow that brings everyone together. I feel sorry for the cow.

Who was your favorite character and why?

It's easy to say Christian because he's the hero, but I liked the Cuban doctor more. He was brave and strong through the whole thing and had so much to lose, more than Christian.

Which scene was your favorite?

The end when Christian discovers how strong the doctor's wife is, even though her life has been turned upside down. I think it helps his resolve with everything that happened in the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No because I needed to digest each chapter and twist. It's hard to keep a great book like this straight. i relistened to each chapter, just so I didn't miss anything.

Any additional comments?

This one gives you a good understanding of why men go to war and what they're willing to die for. Christian's a corporate tycoon who had his eyes opened by the people he's helping and it makes him a better man for it. This was a great one.

Too much useless detail and too much narration.

story starts too slow with a disjointed buildup. it takes a long time to determine how all these people are related and several times I almost gave up. the author interrupted the story several rimes with backstory instead od showing us through the characters

Enjoyed the series

The four books with Gillette as the main character were enjoyable to listen to. The first book, The Chairman, was clearly the best. This last book, The Successor, was probably the worst of the series. All in all, worth the credits and would recommend the entire series for anyone who enjoyed The Chairman.

Eh

Somewhat hard to follow the story jumps around a lot. The performance was great just wish there were breaks in the story where it goes from one event to the next

Very well done thriller

This title was hard to stop listening to. It kept my attention and with numerous characters and a fresh plot, it was spell binding to keep listening to find out what happened next, or how the characters would get out of situations, and trying to determine how it would ultimately end. Various twists and turns kept me guessing, and his true intentions of characters until the end. Very refreshing listen in this genre.

Great book!

I think I enjoyed it a lot because the narrator was excellent. He is definitely one of the best narrators out there !

Implausible

Ridiculous story line and characters need to be fleshed out. Everything is tied up with a neat little bow at the end that left me shaking my head. Waste of time.

Chriistian Giillette Series

The Chairman, The Protegé, The Power Broker, and The Successor are the four novels that are the Christian Gillette Series. Read them in order to glean the most from this story. The stories will stand alone, but you'll miss connections and scratch your head with a lack of understanding. Plus, you'll miss out on some good storytelling.

Plot. Christian Gillette, a handsome 30-something genius, is unexpectedly elevated to Chairman of Everest, a money management firm, via the unexpected death of his boss. Through the four novels, you will learn that Christian is a brilliant financier, buying and selling companies, making his clients, and his staff, multi-millionaires. Deciding 'who to trust' is paramount to his success. Romance, deal-making, back-stabbing, life and death situations, friendships, self-doubt, questions of loyalty, judgement, good guys, bad guys - all swirl through a world of high finance.

Liked. Was prepared to be unenthusiastic about a story of high finance. Boring, right? Nope! This series will hold your attention, not one math problem. It's a terrific tale of suspense, intrigue, even political espionage. There is a lot to the character of Christian Gillette; he's not "just another pretty face". Narration is fine, no issues. A bit slow in tempo, so pumped the iPhone up to 1.3 - not an issue.

Not so hot? Sometimes Christian comes across as a bit immature - most of the time a brilliant alpha male, in charge. His character could have been smoother. A bit cliché, in places, but very readable.

Recommended. High finance can be exciting stuff!

Wrongful death:

I am compelled to voice an opinion, and or complaint;; I think Mr Frey erred in Quinton’s death . He was a loyal friend to the main character and, as such could have been incapacitated in another manner that did not end his participation in this and future stories! For instance , he could have been forced off of the helicopter over the water, far enough out where he could not render aid to Christian, but could have managed to survive! I was VERY disappointed by his death, and I’m quite sure I’m not the only one!
