Publisher's Summary

Jaxie dreads going home. His mum’s dead. The old man bashes him without mercy, and he wishes he was an orphan. And then, in one terrible moment, his life is stripped to little more than what he can carry and how he can keep himself alive.

There’s just one person left in the world who understands him and what he still dares to hope for. But to reach her he’ll have to cross the vast saltlands on a trek that only a dreamer or a fugitive would attempt.

Love

Captivating story. So beautifully written, Tim Winton. Narration by Kate Mulvany inspired casting , so good I listened to it in one sitting.

Bloody ripper!

This book will probably win a stack of literary prizes, but don’t let that put you off. The story, the land, the kid’s voice, the woman reading it are tight and true. You’ll find long detours and extra jobs just to keep listening.

Brilliant narration

Any additional comments?

Wonderful story, evocative descriptions of country and men, two extraordinary characterisations. Tough journey but ultimately so redemptive. Highlight was the perfect choice of narrator; Kate brought the story alive with exquisite rendering of our main protagonists: best of any Audible book so far. .

Jasper Jones meets wake in fright

Tim Winton doesn't wimp out on dark detail. And every boy needs an old man who's fucked up some to teach him about forgiveness.

Narrator

If ever there was an audio book that needed a male narrator, it was this one.

Full of bad languages

Not a bad story but the language when you heard spoken is hard to listen to and put me off the story

Brilliant from zero to hero.

A heart wrenching Australian story. I fell in love with Jaxie and Finton. I hope he gets his girl.

A book in two weird parts

This is a strange book, seems to be searching hard for character development throughout but the plot certainly gets more and more ridiculous. It was reasonable for the first hour or so, then just gets lost on some road trip for the next 5 hours. Tim Winton has done much better stuff in the past so I was pretty disappointed with this.

brilliant dialouge bought to life by Kate

Tim Winton frequently captures the gritty beauty of WA. This book is no exception with vivid descriptions of country that really paint the landscape. Makes easy and enjoyable to imagine. Great occurisms all through it too.
