Their mentor urges them into a regiment of danger and challenge, and the boys test themselves and each other on storm swells and over shark-haunted reefs. The boys give no thought to what they could lose, or to the demons that drive their mentor on into ever-greater danger. Venturing beyond all caution--in sports, relationships, and sex--each character approaches a point from which none of them will return undamaged.

Amazing surfing descriptions

I love Tim Winton and this book is no exception. His descriptions of water and surfing are evocative. Character development was good too. I had watched the film first, then read the book, and it didn't disappoint. I honestly think it was more descriptive than the movie!

Captivating

Story is captivating and draws the reader in in its subtle and sneaky manner . Finished it in two days. Just loved it!

Great read

My favorite book of all time! I’ve read it at least a half a dozen times. It’s so much better than the film.

Tim Winton told a story that I related to do strongly. I’ve been bored with everything I have read recently. This book hit me so hard. It reminded me of the adventures of my youth. The mistakes that I have made in my life. And finally how to live with the memories of these things now that I am older. I recommend it to any adventurous soul.
