Publisher's summary

Robert Sheehan is one of Ireland’s brightest stars of the screen, both at home and abroad. Best known for his roles in Love/Hate and The Umbrella Academy, Sheehan has received widespread critical acclaim for his acting talent

In his debut collection of short stories, Robert Sheehan disappears into characters, challenging the complacencies of everyday experience, often from entirely unexpected angles.

Informed by the author’s peripatetic life, Disappearing Act reflects on the absurdity of human behaviour. Sheehan delves deep into his characters’ streams of self-talk and self-imposed delusions, exploring the dark impulses that lurk below the shiny surfaces of many outwardly normal lives.

Dark, provocative and often humorous, the collection will stay with the listener long after the audiobook is finished.

“Lots of great stories and voices. Reminded me of Irvine Welsh’s short stories.” (Frankie Boyle)

Brilliant

Unique, intriguing, and exquisitely developed stories and characters. Absolutely brilliant author regales us in each and every short story. Beautifully narrated by the author. Only downside is that he leaves me wanting more.

His beautiful caramel voice….

I’ll be honest, I rarely knew what the hell was happening in these stories. Most often it was a “what the f is happening here” with only the last bit of the story making me go “ohhhhh, okay.” Other stories ended and I still had no clue what I’d just heard. And yet, if Robert Sheehan were to read a dictionary I’d sign on to listen. He does a great job with inflection and intonation and creating a character with his lovely voice that basically just drips pure sex even when talking about the LEAST sexy things.

All I needed was visual artwork to match

This book! Each story seemed to evoke the artwork and storytelling of Noel Fielding for me. Extremely odd and beautiful and funny and bold. I loved that Sheehan really gave himself permission to tell such eclectic stories. Each story, another layer of odd and interesting and strange.
I haven’t enjoyed a book like this in ages and it even inspired me to start drawing again. Too many great characters to not be visually represented.

as strange as he is

not sure what to say. difficult to read. difficult to follow. interestingly, written, feels like he wrote it for himself than an audience.
