Publisher's Summary

Brother Cadfael sets out to visit the Saint Giles leper colony outside Shrewsbury, knowing that a grand wedding is due to take place at the Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. As he arrives at Saint Giles, the nuptial party passes the colony's gates. He sees the fragile bride, looking like a prisoner between her two stern guardians, and the groom, an arrogant, fleshy aristocrat old enough to be her grandfather. With his usual astuteness he suspects that this union may be more damned than blessed.

He is horrifically proved right when a savage murder disrupts the May-December marriage leaving Brother Cadfael with a dark and terrible mystery to solve. For the key to the killing - and a secret - are hidden among the lepers of Saint Giles, and Brother Cadfael's skills must diagnose a sickness, not of the body, but of a twisted soul.

Investigate another medieval mystery with Brother Cadfael.

    "Exciting and deeply moving"
Would you listen to The Leper of St. Giles again? Why?

I will listen again, but not for a while. This is not a an upbeat story, it's an excellent story, but parts of it are very sad. I don't put myself through that all that often.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

That would spoil it for future readers! All I can say is that I would change the end.

Have you listened to any of Patrick Tull???s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Oh, yes, several others. He's an excellent reader/actor.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Can't think of a thing.

    "Great story - well read"

A good yarn that kept me interested throughout. At first I thought the narration was a bit slow, but after a while, I really liked it. The narrator does a great job of conveying the feeling of the novel.

I've enjoyed several Br. Cadfael books. Strongly recommended.

    "Quality is so-so"

I have no complaints about the story or performance at all. They're fabulous, as usual. However, I found the quality of the recording to be sketchy. There were several times when the sound got muffled and muted, which was annoying. It would be much better if we got top notch quality with our purchase.

    "I love this series"
Where does The Leper of St. Giles rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

These books do a great job of capturing the Middle Ages, the monastic life, & the role the church played in every day life. Add to that great characters, good plots, early forensics, & a narrator whose voice fits the story perfectly, and what's not to love? (Note: I don't care much for the versions read by a woman, simply because there are SO many male characters that it just works better when read by a man.)

What did you love best about The Leper of St. Giles?

To date I've listened to the books out of order, and like this one best, but now will start with book 1 and continue. I love these books because there is enough "meat" to them that when listened to a second time, it doesn't feel like blah, blah, blah. They seem fresh and expose new details I missed in the first listen. The compassion and intelligence of most characters leaves me emotionally satisfied when I put the book down.

    "Such A Great Series"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Leper of St. Giles to be better than the print version?

Hmm? Tough question. Considering all aspects, I would call it a draw, for each, were enjoyable in their own unique way.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, I suspected the culprit early in the story but he only slipped up near the ending and it wasn't revealed until later but it was an "ahh, haa!" moment for me.

Which character – as performed by Patrick Tull – was your favorite?

As always, he is the voice of Brother Cadfael.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The last scene between Brother Cadfael and the old leper was so well written and so narrated that I was almost in tears. Actually, I read it first and then went to audible and listened. The audible did have me in tears.

    Any additional comments?

I am not tired of this wonderful series and look forward to the next chronical.

I'm reading my way through the series. Loved this one. Good start and story was not as predictable as some of the others.
