Attorney Calvin Dexter hangs his shingle in a quiet New Jersey town, has a reasonably successful practice, and takes the hills strong while triathlon training. But Dexter is no ordinary lawyer. On Sundays, he reads the paper and shuffles around his dark, empty house, trying to forget about a life he has lost forever. Story
The number one New York Times best-selling master of international intrigue takes readers into the bleeding-edge world of technological espionage in a propulsive thriller that feels chillingly real. Former chief of the British Secret Intelligence Service Adrian Weston is awoken in the middle of the night by a phone call from the prime minister. Her news is shocking: The Pentagon, the NSA, and the CIA have been hacked simultaneously, their seemingly impenetrable firewalls breached by an unknown enemy known only as "The Fox".

Story
From Frederick Forsyth, the grand master of international suspense, comes his most intriguing story ever - his own. For more than 40 years, Frederick Forsyth has been writing extraordinary real-world novels of intrigue, from the groundbreaking The Day of the Jackal to the prescient The Kill List. Whether writing about the murky world of arms dealers, the shadowy Nazi underground movement, or the intricacies of worldwide drug cartels, every plot has been chillingly plausible because every detail has been minutely researched.

Publisher's summary
"Knocking off a bank or an armored truck is merely crude. Knocking off an entire republic has, I feel, a certain style." So says mining magnate Sir James Manson, a shadowy titan of London's financial district, who is scheming a coup d'état in the small West African dictatorship of Zangaro, where a secret source of platinum lies waiting to be exploited.
The man selected to plan and carry out the sack of Zangaro is Cat Shannon, a 33-year-old Anglo-Irishman from Nigeria. If the goal is clear, the means are not, for there are no up-to-date manuals on overthrowing governments by force. By the time he has set forth this sinister venture in all its ramifications, Frederick Forsyth has fashioned that manual and given us a classic of terror and enthrallment.

In The Worst of You, just-wed architects Timo and Nia flee a murder scene, setting in motion a chain reaction of lies and betrayals that threaten to unravel everything they have built together. Twisted and propulsive, this thriller is told from the alternating perspectives of the couple and those close to them on Williwaw Island, each with their own motive to use the outcome of the murder case to their advantage. Emma is the one that got away. The only survivor of a serial killer known in the tabloids as “The Hairdresser”, because of the trophies he takes from his victims. The police aren't convinced. Nor is her husband. She never actually saw her tormentor properly, but now she recognizes him in every man she sees. Haunted by the horrifying incident and unwanted notoriety, Emma gives up her job as a psychiatrist and retreats from the outside world to recuperate at home, where it’s quiet. Where she can be anonymous and safe. Where no one can hurt her.

Not the best
I am a big fan of Fred's since "Day of the Jackal"
Before Audible I read everything he penned.
I feel the novel was better than the reading and the movie with Christopher Walken was over the top!
Unless you are die hard fan you might not enjoy the precision planing that overwhelms the story.

Very interesting listen!
While this book is a story of mercenary action in Africa, one kid almost use it as a blueprint for how to do a coup d'etat back in the '80s.
There is a very good plot twist at the end which is well worth the time to get to.
I would highly recommend you listen to this novel if you like reading about mercenaries and their work in Africa and in Europe.

The single best military "fiction" written.
Forsyth completely out does himself in action, plot, sub plot, and details of how to wage a small war and win one for the good guys.
The movie was ok, but had to skip over a lot of the most interesting details of just the "paper work" of war!

Interesting story, mediocre performance
The narrator sometimes sounds as if he’s reading a line for the first time and doesn’t expect the last couple of words in a sentence. Good interesting story. May be dry to some but I enjoyed the detailed setup.
