Publisher's Summary

Life isn't easy for Detective Raven Storm. Her best friend was recently killed and dismembered, her latest case ended with her partner in intensive care, and her mother, the vampiric Mistress of the City, is playing matchmaker...again. The last thing she wants is another bizarre murder case with a partner she doesn't know. But that is exactly what she gets when she is handed the enigmatic case of Nathan King, who was found in his car with a gaping hole where his stomach should be.

Soon, Raven is unraveling a mystery that leads her deep into the city's preternatural underworld, and into the arms of a sexy vampire she barely knows, but whose heart she seeks in the darkness.

An Action Packed Thriller!

This Is A Good Overall Performance! The Story Is Excellent And The Plot Was Intricate Enough To Keep The Mysteries Of The Vampire World On The Edge Of Your Seat! Storm Is An Official Bad Ass And I'm Definitely Looking Forward To More Audio Books About Her And This Narrator...

Just One More Thing...

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I loved Columbo. The TV show and character, of course. Raven’s newest partner, Levac, is a dead ringer for Columbo. Messy eater, trench coat sloppy, more intelligent than he projects. A perfect, quiet sidekick for Raven, who has her hands full keeping the supernatural hidden while investigating a supernatural crime. I like that she’s able to balance a personal life with her intensive work demand, albeit, usually late for anything social. Add a lover, Francois, in a rich, dark and spooky Chicago backdrop, and the story is a winner.

Suzanne Fortin has perfect pronunciation giving clarity and great cadence and voices. Great job there.

Going to be a great series!

Fun new Urban Fantasy Series

This was a good introduction to an Urban Fantasy series I hadn't seen before. It takes place in Chicago and has a couple solid twists. I am interested in seeing how the series develops over time.

The narrator does a good job with the different characters.

Weak characters and world building.

What could Skye Knizley have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

There's practically no world building in this book. It felt like we outright thrown into this fantasy world without much of an introduction. All the characters are also underdeveloped and unrelatable. I didn't connect with any of them and thus didn't enjoying listening to their story. More than a supernatural thriller, this sounded like a halfhearted romance.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Suzanne T. Fortin did a marvelous job with the narration. Each character had a distinct and believable voice and she emoted the different emotions well. She did well with the content given to her. It's the story itself that fails.

Any additional comments?

I received this audiobook for free from the author / narrator / publisher in exchange for an unbiased review.

High-Intensity Kick-Butt Main Character

I was given a free copy of this book in return for an objective review. My review is voluntary.

Raven Storm is one of the most memorable detectives you’ll find anywhere. Her newest partner is a guy who loves his food. But he loves his work, and he has her back. She’s amazing at what she does, but her position on the proverbial family tree means her abilities are excellent and compelling.

Raven’s mom is Chicago’s vampire queen, which makes Raven a vampire princess heir—a royalty that gets in the way of her ability to do good police work and concurrently helps her do it in ways no one else can.

Raven is called to investigate the horrific death of Nathan King, a guy who is found with his entire stomach blown away, and not by a bullet.

This means the vampires and other preternatural creatures that live alongside humans in Chicago are restless indeed. Something or someone is disrupting the normal ebb and flow of the city’s bizarre creature population, and as the murders mount up, it becomes clear that Raven is the only person who can solve the killings and prevent more.

I enjoyed this book; I found the descriptions of the blood soup Raven’s mom ingested a bit unsettling, but the author doesn’t dwell on that to a ridiculous amount.

If you like no-nonsense female detectives who get control and keep it, (and who doesn’t), then Raven Storm is your woman. She has a romantic side, which makes her endearing and someone you want to cheer for throughout the book, but she doesn’t make decisions that put her in the “too stupid to live” category. This is a fast-paced plot that keeps you listening to the end of the book.

Suzanne Fortin’s narration is a huge part of the book’s success. One of the things I love best about her narration is her always-on-target diction. Yeah, I know that sounds a bit bizarre to focus on, but it’s true. Nothing is over pronounced, but her clarity of narration enhanced the book for me big-time. Fortin brings a kind of urgency and immediacy to the book that I suspect the print edition lacks. This is one of those times when the audio edition enhances the plot and becomes a cogent reason for you to keep listening. Fortin’s cadence and inflections made the book a listening pleasure. Combine that with Raven Storm’s story and character development, and you have a great book that will keep you interested throughout. There’s enough fast-paced action here that your mind won’t have time to wander. The descriptions of how the murders are committed is memorable and novel indeed.

Supernatural murder mystery

This story is set in a contemporary context, where our heroine is a detective, but she is also half vampire. An ongoing mystery with all sorts of paranormal twists. It reminds me a bit of the author Laurall K. Hamilton--but different.
I was given this book free for an unbias review.
I enjoyed it.
