Publisher's Summary

When mystery novelist Hazel Martin receives a secretive letter from an old friend who suspects her relatives have murderous intentions, she packs her bags and heads to the country.

Tampered medications, symptoms of poisoning, and suspicious accidents all add up to attempted murder, and it's up to Hazel and her Siamese cat, Dickens, to sniff out the clues. But with a house full of relatives who all have motives, will Hazel be able to unmask the culprit before things turn deadly?

USA Today best-selling author Leighann Dobbs brings back the spirit of the golden age of mysteries in this classic whodunit set in the 1920s.

"Too clear to be a mystery"

I liked the story, but it was kind of clear since the begining of it. It also delved into very unneeded details.

    "Too formulaic h"

I guessed whodunit from the beginning. A lot was very obvious. Characters were flat. Though set in the 20s, there was no historical accuracy and the language was not from the 20s.

    Story
    "Not for me"

On the comedy series "Are You Being Served" an exasperated Mrs. Slocum was known to shout: "Weak as water!" Well, that's how I felt about this story.

I had thought it set in present day at first, with the only real clue coming later about horse-drawn vehicles giving way to cars. Since I never cared much for any of the charcaters, especially the protagonist, revelation of the murderer was not a big deal; I just wanted it to be over. Rather than a cute hook, the cat was just annoying. Wasn't real fond of the way Hazel treated the cop either, but he seemed to wise up that she was using him.

Audio narration seemed to fit the text, which meant that the reader didn't do much to elevate things; if anything, she made them sillier. This is one future series I'd be sure to skip.

    "Pretty good"

The heroine is fun and I love the time period. The story was a bit predictable and the author spends far to much time rehashing the suspects rather than developing the plot. Love the reader, perfect choice for this character.

    "Enjoyable cozy"

If you are looking for something light and entertaining, this might be it. I was unfamiliar with Leighann Dobbs, the author, so got this based on some good reviews.

Hazel Martin is a widow and writer of mystery novels. Her elderly friend (very wealthy, naturally) seeks her help in trying to figure out who among the relatives who stand to inherit her money might be trying to get her out of the way prematurely.

The book is not heavy-weight reading (listening) but it does summon up some of the fun from the classic “between the wars” British mysteries. Hazel uses her experiences as a writer, thinking what her detectives would do, to help her find the clues she needs. She has a cat named Dickens who has accompanied her to this house. And it turns out that she knows the inspector, who of course values her assessment of the case.

A nice little cozy and a decent mystery—plenty of clues for the listener to keep up with. Recommend.

    "Great cozy"

What a great fun mystery! The story was well developed and the narration added a pleasant feel to the listen. And of course the ending: was there a killer? Who did it? What was a real clue?

I've listened to several books my Leigh Ann Dobbs. This is one of my favorites.

Hazel is invited to Lowry House for a birthday party. Unfortunately someone is trying to kill the birthday lady. Hazel is on the case with her bossy car dickens. lol Will she find the killer in time?
