Publisher's summary
Social worker Claire Conover honestly believed she could make a difference in the world until she gets the phone call she's dreaded her entire career. One of her young clients, Michael, has been found dead and his mother, Ashley, has been arrested for his murder. And who made the decision to return Michael to Ashley? Claire Conover.
Ashley had seemingly done everything right - gotten clean, found a place to live, worked two jobs, and earned back custody of her son. Devastated but determined to discover where her instincts failed her, Claire vows to find the truth about what really happened to Michael.
What Claire finds is no shortage of suspects. Ashley's boyfriend made no secret that he didn't want children. And Ashley's stepfather, an alcoholic and a chronic gambler, has a shady past. And what about Michael's mysterious father and his family? Or Ashley herself? Was she really using again?
Amidst a heap of unanswered questions, one thing is for certain: Claire Conover is about to uncover secrets that could ruin lives - or end her own.

Story
It was inescapably chilling, as if the murderer was methodically working his way down a page torn from the phone book. The three victims brutally killed in their own homes had one thing in common: They were all listed as M. Douglas. The fact that Mara Douglas is next on the list has her jumping at shadows, until FBI agent Aidan Shields shows up to make sure she doesn't become the fourth victim.

Carl wants things resolved without police interference, but the deeper Fina digs, the more impossible that seems. As Fina unearths more dirt, the demands of family loyalty intensify. Lucie Montgomery's semi-estranged brother, Eli, calls her in France to tell her that their father, Leland, has been killed in a hunting accident on the family's 500-acre Virginia vineyard. But the vineyard is now shabby and run-down and her siblings want to sell it. Then Lucie's godfather tells her Leland's death was no accident. With her greedy brother, hell-raising sister, and a seemingly cut-rate vintner hired by Leland just before he died, all the suspects are disturbingly close to home.

Madison is booming with dreamers and drifters, visionaries and entrepreneurs. Among them is Sydney Richardson, the daughter of a cop who died on these streets and now the proud, stressed-out owner of Hush Money, one of the city's top new restaurants. Like everyone else in town, Sydney is shocked when Madison's popular mayor - a crusty, charismatic man of the people - is shot to death in his own home. THE READING WAS EXCELLENT...
...but the story was a bit lacking. I would have liked having more possible suspects and a few side stories about other clients to fill it out. The characters were believable, although the foul language of some did nothing to enhance them. I almost stopped listening because of it. I did appreciate that the writer didn't feel obligated to include sex scenes in the book.

Bama born and bred!
Loved the book! Loved the story. The narration sounded a bit robotic and the accent seemed inauthentic. Being from Alabama...near Birmingham, it was a bit forced. other than that, I absolutely loved it!
