Publisher's Summary

Before he was considered a CIA superagent, before he was thought of as a terrorist's worst nightmare, and before he was both loathed and admired by the politicians on Capitol Hill, Mitch Rapp was a gifted college athlete without a care in the world...and then tragedy struck.

Two decades of cutthroat partisan politics has left the CIA and the country in an increasingly vulnerable position. Cold War veteran and CIA operations director Thomas Stansfield knows he must prepare his people for the next war. The rise of Islamic terrorism is coming, and it needs to be met abroad before it reaches America's shores. Stansfield directs his protégé, Irene Kennedy, and his old Cold War colleague Stan Hurley to form a new group of clandestine operatives who will work outside the normal chain of command - men who do not exist.

What type of man is willing to kill for his country without putting on a uniform? Kennedy finds him in the wake of the Pan Am Lockerbie terrorist attack. Two-hundred and seventy souls perished that cold December night, and thousands of family and friends were left searching for comfort. Mitch Rapp was one of them, but he was not interested in comfort. He wanted retribution.

Six months of intense training has prepared him to bring the war to the enemy's doorstep, and he does so with brutal efficiency. Rapp starts in Istanbul, where he assassinates the Turkish arms dealer who sold the explosives used in the Pan Am attack. Rapp then moves on to Hamburg with his team and across Europe, leaving a trail of bodies. All roads lead to Beirut, though, and what Rapp doesn't know is that the enemy is aware of his existence and has prepared a trap. The hunter is about to become the hunted, and Rapp will need every ounce of skill and cunning if he is to survive the war-ravaged city and its various terrorist factions.

Includes the first chapter from Vince Flynn and Kyle Mills' latest thriller, Enemy of the State!

    "Good action novel"

I like a really good action novel, but I had a bit of a hard time getting into this one. I know some people are huge Vince Flynn fans and were devastated when he passed away too soon. That is one reason I decided to read this book, to see what all the fuss was about. I'm glad I read it but probably won't be on his fan list any time soon. The story is good and the writing is good. Just not "down my alley" so to speak.

George Guidall, as always, is a topnotch narrator.

"An engrossing thriller from start to finish"

And we'll narrated by George Guidall. Chronologically, the 1st Mitch Rapp booked, this tells the story of his training and first assignments. A complex, we'll woven plot.

    "Great book"

Wonderful story telling. Specific, intriguing and tight. The style is a great combination of post Cold War adventure and present day political and covert intrigue. George Guidall’s reading is just as captivating as the written word. Five stars!!!

Very well read and paced story. Kept me entertained and found the story to be interesting and and had enough mystery to prevent to lengthy of a foreshadowing.

    "Movie Better than the Book!"

This is one time where the movie was better than the book. too much "growling and grousing" for my taste, but my husband really enjoyed the books.

I couldn't get into this book, narrator would be far better suited to family Christmas stories not assassins...

Unoriginal stuff. No idea why this was a bestseller in the US. The publisher's summary speaks of skill and cunning but I saw very little evidence of this. There are much better spy thrillers out there.

It was hard to get into the story as i found the narrator's voice a little hard to accept. The story is ok and the ending a little to abrupt just as i got into the story. i will listen to the next one in the series and see if enjoy it better!

What made the experience of listening to American Assassin the most enjoyable?

I found the author Vince Flynn through an Audible recommendation based on my previous purchases. They could not have been more right.
    What a find !

What was one of the most memorable moments of American Assassin?

I was gripped from very early on as the back story and characters were skilfully built.
The worst part of the book was ... it ended could have listened for hours more.

Have you listened to any of George Guidall’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I haven't listened to any others but loved his narration in this book

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Just a well written well performed story

    Any additional comments?

Just added the rest of the series to my Wish list !
