Entertaining Murder Mystery

Carrie Lloyd and her detective partner, Guy Maclin, get involved in a case in Memphis where a young couple have been murdered on New Year's Eve. The crime scene is confusing, but Carrie is determined to solve the crime. As the case progresses, it turns from a seeminly innocent young couple dead to drugs and politics. As advertised, it is a clean, cozy mystery that has no sex or violence, no swearing, etc.

The story was good and kept me interested, and confused! throughout. I had just listened to another book with the same narrator, and found the same issue with her narration. She is good, no doubt, but she has a deep voice to begin with, and uses the deep voice for Carrie. The problem is that her mail voices all tend to sound the same, deep, gravely and gruff. It takes a little while in the beginning to get used to the voices and figure out who is speaking, but once you get used to her, you'll enjoy the story.

Entertaining murder mystery

A double murder takes detectives, Carrie Lloyd and Guy Maclin, away from their New Years Eve plans and thrusts them into a case that leaves emotional scars. With very few initial clues the detective work hard to try to break the case and bring the killers to justice. You can’t help but feel empathy for Carrie as she tries to cope with her emotions and you can see why police officers often suffer from PTSD. I enjoyed this entertaining murder mystery and look forward to more in the City Murders series.

Other City Murders were Narrated Better

Other “City Murders” Were Narrated better. Although this lady’s voice was pleasant when she read the women’s parts, her performance of the men’s parts was lacking.

Dalglish’s stories are always a delight

I have enjoyed every one of the novels I’ve experienced by John Dalglish. They are rarities in the modern mystery genre as they are all without the language and gore of most others and yet are well written, compelling stories that hold your interest through to the “didn’t see that coming” conclusions. I especially enjoy reading about cities I’ve visited, as he always puts the action in areas I can picture in my mind’s eye. His characters are believable and he skillful enough to have the good guys tough yet Morally strong and compassionate and the bad guys evil yet seen as redeemable. Great author, can’t recommend him enough!

the changing of the voices was a little off. but great story despite all that

True Police Detective Work

This is the first policial story that really feels like a real life detective work. We get to see all the steps of the investigation from ground zero, the struggle to make sense of the crime, and finally when everything is know, to gather the proof that will bring justice to the victims.
This is part of a serie but there is not much of a cross books story, so you can start, like myself, with this book with no problem, it is totally a self-contain story and I don't think there will be spoilers for the books that came before.
The narrator is talented and is able to make very different kind of voices, but some of them feel a bit like cartoonish or exaggerated. It still creates a good listening experience none the less.

Excellent police procedural............

Memphis Homicide is part of a mystery series, but each book takes place in a different city with completely different characters. For this reason, the books can be read in any order. Obviously, the story takes place in Memphis, and I thought the author did a great job of describing the setting and people of this Southern city and birthplace of Elvis Presley. In this book, police detectives Carrie Lloyd and Guy Maclin investigate the murder of two seemingly innocent young people from good families and with no criminal backgrounds. Because the murders are apparently a gang-style execution, the detectives are originally perplexed. Lloyd and Maclin slowly narrow in on a suspect through painstaking investigation, but the violence isn't quite over yet. As advertised, this book has no graphic violence, no sex and no swearing. Although those aren't particularly bothersome to me in a mystery, I think this book will appeal to fans of gritty and cozy mysteries alike.

Robin Siegerman's narration is fantastic. She has a deep, rather raspy voice for a woman, and this makes her ideally suited for both male and female roles. She differentiates very clearly between characters, and her performance is flawless. I specifically chose to listen to this book because I enjoy her narration so much, and she delivers another stellar performance.

Very good

I found this audiobook to be very good. It has a great combination of murder, mystery, suspense, twists and turns.

Hopefully Not Reflective of the Series

The narrator is a serious distraction. All of the female characters sound alike as do the male characters. The overall storyline is standard without suspense or surprises. It can be reasonably argued that the sole positive of the book is the accurate description of various Memphis locations.
