Story
It's August 1984, and paperboy Christopher Stewart has gone missing. Hours later, 12-year-old Sammy Cox hurries home from his own paper route, red-faced and out of breath, hiding a terrible secret. Crystal, Sammy's 17-year-old sister, is worried by the disappearance but she also sees an opportunity: the Stewart case has echoes of an earlier unsolved disappearance of another boy, one town over. Story
As I sit in her dimly lit bedroom, surrounded by flickering candles, I feel the crushing weight of my daughter’s absence. It's been two years since Layla was murdered. The police have searched tirelessly for her killer, but they've found nothing–it's like whoever did it vanished into thin air. My once-perfect marriage is falling apart, we can hardly look at each other anymore. Our ten-year-old son Gale is struggling. He’s changed since she died. He’s more secretive and also… I can’t quite put my finger on it. They were so close, is this Gale coming to terms with her death?

Teenager Edie Hudson was nobody’s little darling, which made vanishing all too easy. Two decades later, she’s been forgotten by everyone except her mother, Samantha. And the person who knows what happened to her. Samantha has had a long time to remember, and to regret. Having seen how little her daughter mattered to the community in the months following her disappearance, she wonders if Edie was lost before she was even gone. Jonah Baum sees his ordinary life come tumbling down when his wife and young daughter vanish from their home. No evidence of a kidnapping. No sign of murder. No proof that Rebecca didn’t simply abandon her marriage. Just Sally’s crude and chilling drawings, Jonah’s little lies, and the sheriff’s nagging fears that nothing is what it seems. For Sally’s best friend, Lucinda, it’s something else. She trusts Sally not to just disappear, not after they’ve shared so many secrets - especially about the woods and what they saw there. But she’ll never tell. No one would believe her anyway.

Publisher's summary
Told by a tart-tongued young woman with a love of Bruce Springsteen, Lies in Bone is at once a mystery and a coming-of-age tale fueled by dark secrets involving love, murder, and the truths worth lying for.
On Halloween 1963, 11-year-old Chuck Coolidge and his brother, Danny, are lost in a toxic smog covering the steel town of Slippery Elm, Pennsylvania. When the smog lifts, half the town is sick, and 20 people are dead. And Danny is missing. Now, more than 20 years later, Chuck's teenage daughter, Frank, plots her escape from this "busted and disgusted" town.
When a murdered child is found in the river, investigators link the crime to the disappearance of Danny in '63, and Frank's life is turned upside down. In the face of her worst fears, she must uncover her family's dark past if she wants to keep her sister, Boots, from the hands of the state.
As she discovers the unimaginable truth about Danny's disappearance, Lies in Bone culminates in a shocking 11th-hour reveal and an emotionally charged finale.

A must read! This book destroyed me at times.
This book was amazing, to say the least. The entire story was so creative, so well told, and just an absolute emotional rollercoaster. The narrator did an amazing job; I was beyond invested. I don't normally cry reading a book, but I sobbed at parts of this book. That's just how invested it had me in its characters and their stories. I'll be looking for more books by both the author and the narrator.

A rollercoaster of emotions.
The beginning had me disliking most of the characters due to being messy and disrespectful. However, once more details came to light, then I started to understand the behavior of all. The narrator did an amazing job and had me in tears towards the very end. If you can get past Frank's attitude and potty mouth, then you will enjoy this audiobook.

Moving to a small busted town Frances aka Frank must start anew in a small town.
I absolutely adored this book!!
The writing style immediately captured my attention. This coming of age is a gripping story following Frank in her quest for answers. The town is surrounded my death and mysterious deaths. I was hooked till the very last sentence.
Witty lines that made me laugh and want to hug some of these kiddos. I may have cried a bit here and there.
Perfect for lovers of coming of age, mystery and suspense. I highly recommend this book.

just great writing all the way around.
I love the way the author took so much time in the beginning to get you to really know the people in the story before the real suspense starts.
I would recommend this book to anyone, in fact I have already.

Quite heavy
This book took some time for me to fully engage. Once I accepted the narrator’s tone I needed to pace myself because I was becoming more and more curious about Frank.
The story is sad but worth the listen. The main characters are well developed and I wish we had more Boots in the world to remind us to have empathy and do the right thing!

So sad
This book is so sad, although it has a good ending. The narrator's voice is soft so that sometimes it was hard to hear even with the volume all the way up on my phone.

Grim story, depressing, but so very well told
The narrator was very good, would certainly listen to her again, but she does have a small issue with differentiating voices and is the only reason I didn't give 5 stars. Not her fault that there are a few out there that are incredible. She is still very good.
This is a depressing story, the characters have been beaten down in life and are barely surviving, not thriving. However, they are trying. I won't say there are shining points of light in characters in this book, but there are things that are less dark.
This is not a story that will leave you feeling good when you are done, but it is one you will remember. The characters are well fleshed out. I would say brought to life, but this whole book is a depressing world and the characters really are just getting by as best they can.
The author gave me a tour of purgatory and when I was done listening I was happy to get back to my life, but she is a tour guide to be reckoned with.
