Teach an Old Dog New Tricks

Where does French Slang rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

After taking formal French class for 6 years, I actually learned a lot more from the audiobook that I was not taught in class. Even something as “bof” meaning “so-so”. I was never taught that, only “comme ci, comme ca”. And different ways to say “hello” or “hey” rather than just “bonjour”. I feel like it is also important to introduce new slang terms (“texting”) as times change. When I took French class all those years ago, textbooks did not teach us those. It was also nice how the phrases were organized (“Greetings”, “Complaining”, etc.). Definitely something that is useful in my yearly trips to Montreal, as everyone there seems to prefer to speak French. Typically, I can carry a short, formal conversation with natives, but it would be out-of-textbook conversations. It would make me not look as bad if I was able to use some of what I learned from this audiobook!

Very Helpful

Any additional comments?

After studying French since Middle School I thought I would be able to generally understand when listening to people speak in France. To my surprise, I could barely understand anything, not because I had been taught incorrectly, but because of the slang! In school you do not learn the slang. This book is very useful to me as it reinforces the slang that I hear or read constantly and do not alway understand.

On its own, it is quite boring, but if you have specific words/phrases you are looking for the PDF can help you find them so you can forward to that part of the audio to hear the pronunciation.

I like this book better than 'French for Beginners' because it teaches you the 'real' (spoken everyday) French.
