This is an excellent learning tool.

There is no story, but I gave that part of the review 5 stars. Why? Because Paul is so good at building layers of useful dialogue to learn French. Coupled with his style of repetition, and his explanation of confusing concepts, I find this my favorite tool so far for learning french!

Great expansion on the course

This was just what I needed after finishing the previous course and keeping sharp with Duolingo. This next level took me to the conversational level.

Paul's pedantic persillade for perfecting french!

The approach used is to point out the similarity of what you know from English and by repitition drill in the simple changes required to use French. It works amazingly well.
I wish I had Paul when I was an undergraduate taking 6 semesters of French at Tufts.
I listen in the car and I have advanced my knowledge and gained back a lot of my confidence to speak in French.
Download the PDF for practice.
Merci Paul

This will honestly not make you a French speaker

When I first bought this audiobook I read all the reviews and I really thought I could reach a conversational level after finishing, but that is not what happened. Don't get me wrong, this is really good for intermediate learners but I don't think it will help you achieve an advanced level of understanding.

Merci Paul

I've thoroughly enjoyed learning french with Paul! His lessons are genius. When I started, I barely knew 2 verbs in French, now I can string whole sentences together. I feel more confident and will continue my lessons ro become fluent.

Excellent book

Once again Paul Noble publishes an outstanding book for language learning. I have tried several other authors, no-one in anywhere near.

Impressed. Very thorough.

I hadn’t listened to the beginner course before this as I’m already at an intermediate/advanced level of French but I do like to make use of different resources as I often find there’s things of use. Whilst I already knew the vast majority of what was covered I thought there were some really good tips and his explanation of how to think about the two tenses covered here (imparfait and passé composé) was really good. There is a lot of repetition, as there should be but this was done in a clever way which I think will ensure it stays with the learner. The biggest positive is that it leaves enough time after asking the question for you to think and say out loud your answer without pausing which is so often neglected on these types of courses. I don’t think you could have too many complaints with this.

great learning tool

wish there was another one to continue learning. Paul nobles method is very repetitive but it keeps you hooked and before you know it you've done an hour of learning! finally managed to get my head round the imperfect tense after 10 years!! haha

Great way of teaching

Paul cautions you not to overthink what you’re learning but just to go with it naturally and it works - you’ll be surprised at what you’re retaining - I’m in the early stages of an open university degree in French and this is really helping with my accent too

recommend

I bought this after doing the original course after doing a French o level 30 years ago. It mostly consolidates material covered in the original course (which was great). There is a lot of repetition as there was in the original course but this is the key to it sinking in to your brain. I definitely found with this course that I needed less thinking time than I did on the first course. I hardly use pause at all. Using French and constructing sentences is definitely starting to feel more natural. I have the book too which is useful for checking the spelling.

Outstanding

An outstanding book, so perfectly done. It was pitched perfectly for someone like me who retained some of 'O' level (GCSE) French, but wants to compound and progress a stage or two.
I will seek out the next edition, and also have it in mind to get a start on the basics for a couple more European languages which Paul has covered.

très excellente

Fabulous audiobook with plenty of répétition and its amazing how many French words are in the English language. I feel like I'm now at intermediate level with my French, so this book is well worth getting if you've grasped the basics.

Ce cours est fantastique!!!

FANTASTIC!

I’m studying languages at university after a 20 year long gap year!

Thanks to Paul Noble’s AMAZING courses I am now up to speed (if not ahead of the game).

Can you make a Scots Gaelic one - Please.

Both his beginners course and his next steps are invaluable. I feel confident in French and will definitely be trying your other ones.

Take this course- I promise that you won’t be disappointed.

Worthwhile: sound (but unexciting).

If you have made your way successfully through First Steps, you will probably agree that the programme has guided you into a kind of comfort zone of extracting responses from you that are for the most part 'determined' to be correct by the prompts of the coach.
Next Steps continues with this method, which is why I would sum up the experience as being sound but unexciting. And in some respects Next Steps makes for easier practice than First Steps in that there is nothing as tricky in the selection of language points as the lessons on the placement and order of pronouns, which make up a large part of First Steps.

Very disappointing. I have just completed the previous 3 CDs and purchased this one assuming it followed on. It does not. He keeps referring to words and work not yet covered. WIsh i had read the reviews before purchasing.

Outstanding

Can't recommend Paul Noble highly enough. His course is fantastic if you want to learn the language but don't know where to begin. He will convince you that you are actually able to do this and show you that it isn't really that hard. Next time I start a new language his course will be the first thing I use. I recommend obviously doing the beginner course first as this follows straight on. Enjoy.

Fantastic for an intermediate French speaker

I was wanting to brush up on my French that I learnt during high school - and haven't spoken for 10 years. It all came flooding back to me and helped me to learn many useful phrases and understand how to contract more complex sentences in all different tenses.
I didn't always know the word in French when prompted but they are great at repeating it a few times in the chapter so you can catch on really quickly.
I love Paul's voice - it's calming, upbeat and encouraging.
I'm feeling very positive about my French now but I will continue to practise.

Excellent

I was worried after reading some reviews that this wouldn’t be a natural progression from the first course. However, it really is! Absolutely fantastic. I could feel myself progress even further with the ability to mix past tenses. Couldn’t recommend this enough. Cheers Paul.

4th in a series. Makes learning easy with helpful ways to remember

I have loved this series. In the first book, Paul starts by telling you to relax, that you will forget things, but when you listen again, you will find it easier to remember. This tip, and the way the courses are presented, takes the stress out of learning a French and helped me feel like I was progressing well through the lessons, rather than feeling overwhelmed. He has a nice voice too!

Missing parts

I’m not sure if I’m just missing some other vital audiobook that isn’t available on Audible, but I finished the initial parts 1, 2 & 3 and thought this was the next one but I am obviously very behind as there are many words I do not recognise, but I cannot find any mention of a book that goes between these ones. I’m so disappointed! It’s going to be a lot harder to learn without those vital parts!
